Oppenheimer (2023)
It's a lot
Oppenheimer (2023) is a lot. I feel like that's the best way to describe this movie. Obviously, all the performances were absolutely incredible, especially from Cillian Murphy, R. D. J, and Emily Blunt. Oppenheimer takes even mundane scenes to the most tense possibility. You'll probably feel the same in the seconds leading up to the Trinity test as you feel watching Cillian Murphy sit in a chair in the background while everyone else talks, it's that tense. It's also incredibly melancholic, the movie ends where you expect it to but the revelations and connections back to the beginning are perfectly executed. Oppenheimer was an incredibly complex individual and while the movie does want you to root for him it also showcases many of his shortcomings throughout his life. The Trinity test itself is beautiful in an eerie way and what follows is even more interesting. The dialogue is spot on and the sound mixing is insanely well done which is a big step up from Nolan's other movies. Definitely a must-see in IMAX. Almost perfect except for the sex scenes, especially the one during the interview, which were so out of place and made my whole theater uncomfortable. (9/10)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Perfection
The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) is one of the best movies of all time. Peter Jackson's perfectly adapted premier of his Middle Earth is truly stunning. Everything about this movie is amazing. Every character is perfectly cast with standout performances from Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen who build upon already amazing characters. The technological feats this movie was able to pull off are also stunning. From using insane practical effects to groundbreaking CGI at the time and incredible props/makeup alongside highly detailed miniatures, this movie was the definition of innovative. Jackson does a great job of setting up the world and characters while never feeling rushed or too slow. It's easy to see how influential these movies were in pop culture by the effect they still have to this day. With The Lord of the Rings being one of the most acclaimed stories ever told, Jackson's debut entry into this world was flawless.
Arrival (2016)
Incredibly Moving
Arrival (2016) is a very special movie. Villeneuve has proven time and time again his ability to craft incredible, moving, and thought-provoking stories that keep you engaged the entire time. So many things about Arrival make it a special movie but the most important to me was the moral implications of the ending. In an amazingly emotional scene, Villeneuve ties together the themes of parenting and making devastating choices. The acting is top tier with Amy Adams stealing the show. Visually striking and ominous, Arrival's tone is perfect in every scene being further heightened by the eerie and beautiful soundtrack. The story of Arrival is incredibly complex and nuanced, pulling at your heartstrings for a devastating conclusion. The amount of time and effort that went into the language of the Heptapods shows immense knowledge of language and makes you invested in deciphering these creatures.
Gekijouban Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (2021)
Another Mappa W
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (2021) is an absolutely stunning movie. I am a very big fan of Mappa, especially their more recent works, and this movie has some of the best-animated sequences the studio has produced. Not only does JJK0 have incredibly fluid action scenes, but it also has a stellar hype-inducing soundtrack with amazing performances from both sub and dub voice actors. The highlight of the entire cast is Geto's dub voice actor, Lex Lang, who goes all in, providing one of the best vocal performances in recent memory. All of the characters are extremely likable, even the ones with antagonistic tendencies that make the entire cast both memorable and nuanced. The Animation is top tier with beautiful 2d and 3d compositing, the sound design is impactful and exciting, and the story is complex and riveting, especially with the entirety of the Jujutsu Kaisen narrative context in mind. Overall, Incredible!
Prisoners (2013)
Fall at Its Core
Prisoners (2013) is a very disturbing movie, but at the same, oddly cozy. To me, this movie is the perfect "Fall" movie. The soundtrack is slow and methodical accompanied by Villeneuve's masterful visuals. This film feels like a warning to anyone willing to listen and dive into the minds of its main characters. Everyone is a prisoner to something and as the characters deal with this in separate ways, even deplorable acts can become somewhat justifiable. Villeneuve is able to expertly weave an incredibly gripping masterpiece of visual storytelling along with amazing acting. Jake Gyllenhaal is especially good, his small twitches and contrasting sudden bursts of rage blend so well together. Prisoners is a perfect example of the darkness ahead, but just out of sight. It's the perfect fall movie because of the knowledge of approaching cold storms and the feeling of not being able to stop them. The ending is also incredibly unique and I've yet to see another movie even attempt a similar style ending. Overall, Incredible!
Following (1998)
A Great Start
Following (1998) is an intense and memorable start to Christopher Nolan's career. The Film is not only visually impressive showcasing the early signs of Nolan's Signature style, but the story is what really sticks out. An intense crime drama portrayed as a puzzle jumping between past, present, and future while juggling a diverse and nuanced cast of characters turn this budget project into an authentic experience. While the film does lack some polish, especially concerning the soundtrack and what will become an entire career of sometimes hard-to-hear dialogue, these flaws don't take away too much from the movie overall. Following is a film about a unique idea that oozes Nolan's style and passion in a refreshing and extremely well-done manner. It should not be overlooked by its age and at the time, amateur director, as the film excels with what it has to offer. Overall, Amazing!
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
So Much Fun
Spirited Away (2001) is so much fun. I watched the entire film with a massive smile. All of the characters are charming and unique. I thought Sen's character was especially well done acting as a relatable character experiencing the world at the same time we do. The world is stylish, immersive, wacky, goofy, confusing, and just a lot of fun. I would definitely recommend watching this movie blind. I think it's best to not see anything about this movie before watching it but just keep an open mind. I've seen it many times now and I really believe it's a film you need to see more than once to really appreciate. This was the first anime movie I had ever seen and wow. Miyazaki is known for his dedication to hand-drawn perfection and that talent really shines in this movie. Looks beautiful, has great characters, and is just a great time.
Arcane: League of Legends (2021)
A Masterpiece
Absolutely amazing. One of the best shows ever made. Never played league and wasn't even going to watch the show but oh my god. The entire voice cast gives it their all with stellar performances. The stunning blend of 2d animation with 3d models makes every scene gorgeous. The plot and writing is phenomenal with an amazing sense of world building. I was truly blown away by this show and would put it on the same level as Avatar. Every signal character is nuanced and feels real, relatable, and by the end of the 9 episode Roller coaster the only thing I could think about were some of the standout scenes which used hyper stylization and music which isn't my taste, but fits so perfectly with the shows setting and characters. The amazing team at Fortiche and Riot really gave us somthing special. Hope they take the time they need to make season 2 just as good, if any show could do it. It's this one. Raised the bar for animation and tv in general.
