The House That Jack Built (2018)
Lars' struggle to be something he is not
Yet again Lars Von Trier tried his old formula of shock value combined with pseudo intellectual elements in order to make the viewer uneasy and as a result, create the fake impression of having been exposed to something deep and forbidden. as if he has passed yet another imaginary boundary of art to let us face our true self.
a boring, unnecessarily long and repetitive portrayal of human psyche.
he spends 150 minutes on such portrait yet he gets so lost in making sure we are shocked that he fails to give the viewer a clear picture of the psychopath's motivations or there lack of. he tries to hide his clear lack of knowledge on the subject matter with bold and crude symbolism which has led his creation to lose subtlety required for an art to be something other than an statement.
unfortunately his movies are becoming more of a reaction towards the audience's acceptance( or lack of) rather than any stand alone project. you can no longer watch any of his movies without noticing this is his anger projected into the story. he is pissed and he has completely let go of his ego to drag him whenever it wants.
Chôjin densetsu Urotsukidôji (1989)
A Mess!
I was in search of something close to the perfection of Wicked City; which to me is the climax of japanese ero-guro, when I stumbled upon highly regarded Urotsukidoji: legend of the overfiend. this hentai is beautifully made indeed. the art and color palette are magnificent as one would expect from the golden era of japanese animation. however compared to Wicked City I for one was a bit disappointed of the way the plot and characters had been developed. the core story is great don't get me wrong, problem is that it is a bit too much to be put in a feature film. I believe this would have been more suited for a series rather than a movie, the running time of a film was simply not enough for all the details and new characters to unfold properly which has resulted in a mess. at some point all you see is explosions of lights and colors from demons and monsters coming to life only to fight their final battle right away and get destroyed or shape shift to another creatures to the point that it becomes annoying. this indeed was beautiful to look at if there was no story that needed to be taken cared of.
all in all, it's a shame this anime didn't live up to the expectations it creates in you when you first step in it's universe. they really don't make them like this nowadays.
which is why I am a bit pissed at the flaws.
School of Life (2004)
after all these years still the best short film I've ever seen,.. and I have seen a lot!
I remember when I first watched this amazing short film at the Tehran short film festival back In the day and I was blown away by it's message, and I believe being young, I probably never completely understood it at that point and later life itself proved how deep this very short film really is. something to watch over and over again and still be amazed at how fresh every viewing is. it has one of those clever ideas that you wish you had come up with!
I'm very disappointed that the director has not done any other movie as he's clearly has a lot to offer aside from his main expertise which is cinematography. also, I need to mention that when I first saw this flick I immediately contacted Jake Polonsky and he was kind enough to sent me a signed DVD to Iran. dear Mr. Polonsky, if you ever read this, I want you to know that I'll never forget your kindness and you and your movie are forever in my heart.
