Lucifer (2016)
Devilishly Surprising
As the saying goes "The Devil that you know is better than the Devil that you don't." I began to watch this show with incredibly low expectations. I mean the Devil in Los Angeles, aka the City of Angels, as a nightclub owner? Sounds corny, right? Well I couldn't be any more wrong. This show had me hooked and throughout all the debauchery and intensity, a very meaningful message lays in its foundation. That even Lucifer himself can be redeemed through goodness and love. That all bad people are bad not because they are naturally evil but because of the actions that they choose to take. It is in our will, our course of action to determine our own fate. With an incredibly strong message like this, it's hard not to stop watching, because what if the Devil is really evil? What if he's not? Lucifer never ceases to miss. Just when you think he's disappointed you, he does not quit or stop to redeem himself. With such an incredible story arch and character development the show does a more than excellent job at making the audience literally feel sympathy for the Devil. Season 1 was fantastic and the final season was a phenomenal conclusion to such a life-changing series. It's hard not to love all the characters and connect to them in some way. From Lucifer's irresistible charm to Chloe Decker's impeccable brilliance and bravery, they are an unstoppable duo with undeniable chemistry. As Lucifer struggles with finding meaning and purpose in himself, he also learns from his mistakes through the bond he shares with the detective. The journey that they take is unexpected and full of twists and turns that left me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend this show to anyone struggling with changing themselves and finding redemption. As above so below, I will never forget this show.
Breaking Bad (2008)
Perhaps the greatest TV show ever made
I used to be one of those people who "never watched the popular shows". My friend forced me to watch the first episode of Breaking Bad, of course I've heard of it but refused to watch it because it didn't make sense to me. How could a show about a teacher who has cancer and makes meth be that good? Oh how I was wrong. It really is that good, I was hooked to my TV screen like I was the one with a drug addiction. There's just something about this show that's so real and so incredibly emotional. I have never experienced a show that good at conveying itself and that is why Breaking Bad will be timeless and enjoyed by all kinds of people. The casting is the best casting I have ever seen, every actor and actress, no matter how small their part was incredible. Their acting is so natural and believable, from Walter himself to Gustavo Fring to Saul Goodman to Jesse Pinkman, you just get transported into their world. And despite knowing that Walter and Jesse are in the wrong, you can't help but feel sorry for the both of them.
Moon Knight (2022)
Marvel please stop
Marvel, Disney, whatever...I beg of you to stop making TV shows. Leave that to DC, they make better shows. Honestly, just do yourselves a favor and read the comics instead of watching this show. The first episode looked promising but immediately fell down in quality and plot. I really thought the writers were going to make this into a creative, dark and psychological thriller. And immediately after the first episode the show plummeted because they decided it'd somehow be better to make the character into a stereotype of a superhero. We just started the show and now we are at a poor quality, elementary level kind of writing. I really don't think Marvel should be making shows, I swear they started to do this to compete with DC but now they're just making shows like this to launder money or something. I have no idea, I just want Marvel to stop making TV shows like this, it's utter garbage, that has no plot.
Dangerous Liaisons (2022)
Why all the negative reviews? Lmao
All the people here complaining that it's not like the original movie or the book are all a bunch of boring boomers who have no idea what they're talking about. I watched the original movie, and by god it was the most boring period movie I have ever seen. And the casting was just horrid. Above all the original film is slow and it's one of those period movies for people who like to think they're smart and very intelligent, and there's absolutely no plot line, you just have to guess it as the film goes along. This adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons is absolutely not like that at all it's refreshing, romantic, and utterly exciting. It's definitely not the same story, it's more like a prequel to the original tale. And I very much prefer this. Perhaps if the show was not advertised as the original Dangerous Liaisons but instead as a prequel, then all the triggered snowflake boomers would not be so pissed off about it. Sadly this show was cancelled thanks to all the whiners, hopefully somehow it'll be renewed but I doubt it.
Good Omens (2019)
Impossible not to resist
I wasn't expecting much from this show but boy is it different and I am sure due to the sensitivity of religious matters this did piss off certain folks. But in all honesty, ironically...there is very little Biblical (or at least accurately biblical) scenarios, it's predominantly made up or very loosely based upon. Other than that the casting is impeccable. Perfect casting! Michael Sheen is so wholesome and pure as the angel, Azeraphale and David Tennant plays a perfect, charming, cunning demon, Crowley! It's like a match made in heaven...or hell depending on your preference. The first season especially was just incredibly good, the whole concept of the antichrist and how he really was just a normal kid and the witch who's a descendant of a prophetess who is looking to capture him to prevent the end of the world, was really interesting. It offered a fresh take on a loosely based fictional work on Abrahamic mythology. I would have rated this show a full ten stars if it wasn't for second season which was rather in my opinion very lacking. I wish that they had elongated the story of the antichrist into second season instead of focusing on a very weak storyline. Still the writing was able to cover up the weak plot was good enough, especially thanks to the two main characters. Now the ending?!!! Amazon better give us a season three because I screamed when I saw that ending, you can't pull our hearts like that and leave.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
Definitely not what I was expecting in a good way
The posters for this show do not do it justice. I really thought this would be a corny, cheesy, fantasy TV series that's really just for teenagers. Wow I was incredibly wrong. First of all season 1 was fantastic. I loved the world building, the diverse fictional countries and the concept of the Fold which physically divides the country. The characters are vivid and the casting is overall very good. I absolutely fell in love with the story and binge watched the whole series in two days. Now I have not read the books, so I don't know what it's like, but I am really hoping that Alina ends up with General Kirigan. Yes he's evil but the actress (Jessie Mei Lei) and actor who plays their roles had great chemistry. (Sorry but the only bad casting choice was Mal, he's incredibly shallow and has no personality whatsoever. Maybe it's not the actors fault it could just be the writing. But like how does villain and hero have more chemistry? Hope they fix that in season 3). Even if Kirigan is dead at the end of season 2, I really hope the actor Ben Barnes returns because he really adds character to the show. I also love the actress that plays Inej (Amita Suman)! She plays so beautifully with her eyes. You can see how badly Inej loves Kaz, but at the same time, refrains from approaching him in that way. Really talented actress and I hope her character will be seen again in season 3! Overall, incredible show with a unique plotline and unique settings. The aesthetic of the show is like Eastern vibes (Russia and China) but with a steampunk twist.
Mayfair Witches (2023)
As a huge fan of Anne Rice...
Where do I begin? Just no...nope this is not it. As Anne Rice fans we have waited over 20 years for a Mayfair witch TV series or movie that's connected with the vampire franchise. What do we get? A boring and awkward TV show that has no mystery, no darkness, no complexity and absolutely no seduction or sensuality. Everything is awkward. The casting is terrible the woman who plays Rowan literally acts and looks like the female version of the guy who's in The Good Doctor. Real ones know the way Rowan is in the books and this was not it. She's an intelligent and remarkable character and they've ruined her and the whole story. From the bizarre and really zero chemistry sex scenes to the endlessly sloppy dialogue that sounds like it was heavily inspired by a cheap high school production, I am beyond disappointed. And I thought the Interview with the Vampire TV adaptation was bad. Dear god, this was not the Mayfair family I read in the original series. When we said we wanted an Anne Rice cinematic universe this was not it. I would rather it not have happened at all with such an unbearable show.
Outlander (2014)
I actually love this show but gave it a one star for this reason
Okay so, I love this show, absolutely love it. But why the one star review? Simple, because I am furious at the writers of this show. It is genuinely such an amazing concept with so much material. The characters are great and the actors are fantastic. But what has genuinely driven me to insanity about this show is that it easily, easily, easily lets the bad guys win. Again and again and again and again and again. Meanwhile, the good guys in the show fight and bicker amongst each other but never have the energy to muster up and defeat the evil and most disgusting villain I have ever seen in TV history, Jack Randall. I have never hated a character so much in my entire life before, so much so that I can't even stomach seeing the actor's face. The man is beyond evil, there is nothing to like or feel sorry about him. He is simply worse than the devil himself. For what he did to Jamie's sister, for what he did to Claire, and for what he did to Jamie who was brutally led to a fate worse than death at the hands of that vile being, Randall gets away easy every time. I could not take it anymore. My heart could not bear it. It was simply too much for me and it got to the point where it was just plain stressful and I wanted to throw my laptop against the wall. Like what more does Randall need to do for him to deserve death? For him to be incredibly hated and despised by the main characters? And I forgot which episode it was but when Jamie was saving Claire from Randall he had knocked him out, he had the chance of killing him there. And instead of that the writers of the show added a stupid dialogue in which they made Jamie say that "Randall was a helpless man". Wtf?!!!!!! Like dude he tried to rape your sister, he tried to rape you, he lashed you 100 times, and then he tried to rape your wife more than once! What more does he have to do for the main character to hate him? How is it logical for Jamie not to have killed him then and there? He's a Scot they don't forgive easily. Now, regarding Claire, it also just doesn't make sense to me why Claire would even love her first husband Frank still, despite him having the same face as Randall because he's his descendant. Sure, it's not Frank's fault he's related to that animal, but how can a woman like Claire stomach seeing his face knowing what his ancestor did and having the same face as him? For that alone it's just not logical for her to still love him. Especially after everything Jamie has done for her. While I absolutely hate Jack Randall to the point where the final two episodes of season 1 disgusted me beyond words, the main character Claire has been getting incredibly stupid and annoying. I liked her more at the start where she was a healer and smart and witty. Now, she just makes poor decisions and is not angry enough about what Randall did to her and to Jamie. I was pulling my hair out for her to tell him that she loved Jamie or that she would avenge him after what Randall did to him. But noooooo the writers gave so much unnecessary dialogue and unnecessary violence and in the very unnecessary long rape scenes, that they couldn't add one damn sentence saying that Claire would avenge him. I just couldn't believe it. I skipped through all the rape scenes as my stomach couldn't bear it and it was so messed up. On top of this, Claire somehow doesn't know why Jamie wants to kill himself after what happened. If I was in Claire's shoes I would try to kill myself if Jamie wanted to do that to himself. And another thing I want to quickly point out of what I thought was a huge plot hole, Claire had the keys to the prison the best thing she could have done was cause a distraction. She could have offered the prisoners their freedom if they caused a ruckus. Then she should have let them go and that would give her more than enough time to save Jamie and escape. Or while Randall was forcing himself onto her husband, she should have gouged out his eyes. She had her hands free she could have made a move quickly and then grabbed the hammer and killed him. It's as if the writers have done everything in their power to degrade all of their good characters and make them as stupid as possible. Meanwhile Randall gets away with literally everything. If Claire escaped then found the warden, in which he would have caught Randall in the act of homosexuality, they could have killed him immediately as the warden is a very religious man. There's so many possibilities for the good side to win, but did the writers do that? Nope. They did everything in their power to make the evil characters win and it's at a point where it's gotten more than frustrating. It's just plain sick minded and messed up. They just wanted Jamie to be raped for the sake of him being raped in the same way they tried to rape Jenny and Claire. Because of these scenes alone, and I am sure the actors were uncomfortable with it too, I give this series that I loved so much a 1 star. I am tired of TV shows that have so much potential and an amazing cast be wasted with scenes that have so much depravity. Enough is enough. I nearly threw up watching the final two episodes of season 1. I don't know if I can stomach the rest. I'm just very angry.
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
Simply Unbearable
If you're a "intellectual" smug and falsely emboldened individual you will think that this movie is just pure genius! There is literally nothing and I mean nothing interesting about this movie. I am shocked that it even has such a high rating. The script is such pretentious bull, the dialogue is slow the acting is slow, the lighting, yes even the lighting is slow. This entire movie revolves around nothing. There is no fascination, mystery, or intrigue that vampire stories often have. Even Twilight is able to accomplish this to some extent by adding allure. In fact, this didn't feel like a vampire movie at all. This felt like a waste of time. There is literally no storyline worth explaining or watching. It's like the person who wrote the script had no idea what they were doing so they took some shrooms to finish it out because it's so mellow and boring. And the ending was just stupid. Everything was stupid. Don't waste your time and watch another movie. I wish I could take back 2 hours.
The Wisdom of Crocodiles (1998)
Unique, Original, and Underrated
This isn't like the usual vampire movie, there are very few cliches and very few cringeworthy vampire moments. To sum it up without giving any spoilers it's about a vampire who need the blood of a person he loves in order to stay alive. Who knows how long he's been cursed to do this but as a result of this he's lonely and sad. It's truly a terrible life and it makes the viewer ponder why someone would continue to live as such. Another aspect of the film that really struct me was the symbolism in the apartment from the pictures Steven was drawing to the decor. Very subtle notes that many viewers perhaps did not pick up on. The acting overall was great. Jude Law played a very convincing, charming, and charismatic hero, while Elina Lowensohn did a great job at playing a shy, loving, and intelligent character. The only bad thing about this movie was that there was little back story. It also did not make sense on how Steven was able to get away with this for so long. He seemed a bit sloppy with "work" and I think for a vampire so old he'd get the use of it by now. Other than that, incredible movie, it truly made me feel uncomfortable at times. It's the kind of movie that isn't scary but leaves and impression on you, one that leaves you really uneasy.
The Invitation (2022)
It's okay
Not sure why the ratings are this low, I didn't really like this movie but it's not that bad to the point that it makes someone cringe to death. The beginning was bad it was straight up really cliche, really forced, boring, and not enough build up or action. The second half was not so bad kind of redeeming itself, except for the ending. The ending was horrible, rushed, and genuinely pathetic that anyone with half a brain cell can agree on how stupid the ending was. Most of this movie was eye candy, we have beautiful landscape, beautiful mansion, the costumes, people, all beautiful. The story is actually not that bad if anything this movie taught me never to take a DNA test. However, if the writers had spent more time cutting out the unnecessary bits at the start, then the ending would not have been so rushed. I'd give it a higher score had it had that. Despite the storyline being okay, the writers messed up big time. Sometimes I wonder how Hollywood writers just don't see the missing dots or plot holes that are incredibly blatant to the eye. It's like they're all smoking something when writing these scripts. I just feel bad for all the people that gave great effort to make this movie, however despite all the bad it is entertaining. That's why I gave it a 7, you just have to turn off your thinking noggin and complain about how bad the movie was at the end of it. If one does not think this movie is pretty interesting. It's not scary at all, but it's got some intrigue. Sure it's predictable as hell, but not so bad overall. I'd only recommended watching this movie when you're doing laundry or something it's more entertaining that way.
Renfield (2023)
The only bad thing about this movie is that it wasn't longer
I was pleasantly surprised I had no hopes for this movie at the start, but I loved it all the way through! It was funny, violent, sad, and even a little romantic! Despite all the gore in this movie somehow it's such a cute and adorable film. This film has already become one of my new favorite comfort movies. Almost everything about this film was perfect! I loved the casting! Everyone was fantastic at their roles, nothing was over exaggerated or annoying. I also loved the message of the movie and the amount of action and suspense, it paired perfectly well with the comedic undertones. Perhaps the best thing about this movie was that the jokes were not lame or constantly forced, the comedy was perfectly paired so that it was just enough for you to take the action scenes seriously. The only horrible thing about this movie was that it was too short. I wish we had more back story on Renfield. Some parts had to be rushed towards the end, I wish the movie lasted another 15-20 minutes or so. I really wish and hope that Hollywood makes a second movie to this. Keeping my fingers crossed because I'd really love to see Renfield become a multi million dollar movie franchise. I'd highly recommend watching it if you love dark humor!
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
Genuinely hated this
I've read the comics, and trust me it's not a difficult read. They're fairly short. And they would have had much more potential if they had stuck to the comics. Instead we have this very boring, very woke kind of TV show. The acting and casting is terrible. The quality and budget of the show genuinely looks like a gem. However, I hated it. I couldn't even get past first season. All of it is eye candy. The jokes aren't funny, the actors look like they were hand picked by some ridiculous and absurd Netflix wokesperson. The plot doesn't actually have a storyline and if it does it very much so all over the place. I wouldn't recommend and I know that many people just like this show because of Gerard Way.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Please don't watch this movie
As someone who grew up watching the old Matrix movies, this movie will definitely demolish the reputation of the first one especially. Everything about this movie is slow paced, cliché, and cheesy. The action scenes and special effects were terrible. Our lead, Keanu Reeves was not the amazing badass Neo in the last three movies we had all been entranced with. Instead he literally looked like he was going through a mid life crisis and he has no idea what he is doing. And strangely enough, Carrie Anne Moss does not appear on screen as Trinity as often as I thought she would. Which is a shame. Overall the entire screenplay was incredibly poorly written, the directing mediocre at best (what happened to the classic fight scenes and revolutionary cinematics of the first two Matrix movies?) and the story line was so needlessly complex not even the writers knew what the hell they were doing. If you love yourself and you don't want to ruin your concept of the Matrix, please don't watch this movie. Just don't do it. Save yourself time and money. Don't even bother trying to figure out the plot because there is nothing special, you'll only end up disappointing yourself more. This entire movie should not have been made in the first place, there was absolutely no need for this. The Matrix's iconic legacy has been tarnished by this cash grab of a film.
