Foundation (2021)
Loved it
I thought this show was compelling, smart, and well paced. The actors are all brilliant. Lou Llobell stole my heart from the beginning and what a great match with Alfred Enoch. Even the sinister characters drew me in and I found it difficult to dislike them, simply because of their complexities. It's about time these Old Masters were remade in the image of a science fiction that more closely resembles the revolution at the core of their imaginings. Well done.
Admittedly, it's not a perfect show which is why I didn't give ten stars, however I hope that season 2 gives us more of what works about the show.
Loki (2021)
Played out
I didn't enjoy this series. There's something off about it and I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe Tom's version of Loki feels played out? I found myself easily distracted and checking emails.
Sort Of (2021)
I really want to like this show and
I'm nervous because of the high stakes involved in creating something that hasn't been done before. There's a strong need for this storyline. Undoubtedly. Does this full that need? Maybe for some audiences it does. Like the trans rights movement, we are going to experience some awkward moments in finding our individual selves and collective selves.
Something I wish there was more of: direction. Sabi is a complex character and I feel the actor/ess' monotone delivery could have been addressed by a good director. Someone else mentioned humour. Also could be addressed by the script and perhaps a comedy coach.
I didn't find the campiness to be too much. I find it refreshing in mainstream tv. It's a part of a particular subculture and they deserve space to express this.
Also Sabi's outfits are great and I like the way they are confident in who they are. Their relationship with their mom makes sense to me as a non binary person and wish there was more context explained about why Sabi is guarded with their mom. It's a whole thing and is cultural as well as contextual and deserves more thought out into showing how difficult it is to come out as our true genders - which is very distinct from coming out as gay or lesbian. It's great how their sexuality is present though their gender and race/culture really shapes the entire show.
