The Menu (2022)
Eat your way into what's being served
The menu, I liked this film a lot and it's very difficult to review. Why?
Because of the very thin line between Horror and Thriller that's being served. Somehow the movie is focused on enticing a feeling of fear (horror), but the movie also generates suspense and excitement. The presence of black comedy, mainly because of the interaction between the characters, softens the fear and/or suspense effect the movie is serving you.
For watching this movie succesfully, so that you end up with good review, my advice would be to put yourself in the restaurant without a certain expectation/choice. If 'the menu' is a 'hamburger', just watch the movie with an attitude 'I want a hamburger (the menu)' instead of 'I want a hamburger (the menu) well done (thriller) or medium rare (horror)'. The film itself will serve on different ways.
Tastelessly watching this movie while getting absorbed by the atmosphere, what's being served, made this movie a very good watch.
Los renglones torcidos de Dios (2022)
Let it be, be insane and it deserves a 9
Very good movie. To me the whole world in the asylum is one big metaphor for 'an'- not 'the' - outcome of the story, otherwise said your outcome.
Let me give you some examples:
- Urquieta's waterphobia/illness and his declaration/lie in favour of Alice Gould stands for her husband, victim of food poisoning but on the other hand the liar, making a lie about her. Ever thought that the food poisoning might be real but the husband's fraudulent actions even so (it's not always either... or... but sometimes both... and...). The psychedelic scene after the shock therapy affirms this,
- Romulo en Remo is a metaphor for Alice's dual personality. It also reflects an ambiguity. Alice reflects a love towards Romulo and vice versa, whereas Remo is ignored by het throughout the whole story. This resembles the viewer's continous fight over who Alice really is. Is she Romelo and thus less sick or more sick, or is she Remu and thus more sick or less sick. Here you can equalize sickness with goodness, realness,... Wat the viewer should keep in mind: only romelu survives, so one side of het dual personality dies...
- the gnome and Elephant man (Alvar and Donadio): the latter one sets immediately her eye on the sick sister (Alice), whereas the first one is killed by Alice (compare the gnome's death with Alvar's trial), afterwards Donadio's entrance can be compared with Elephant man's revenge
- the group of doctors declaring her sane among a group full of doctors (the doctor are the patiëntes she creaties a band with, the trial is the ruckus Alice caused with the fire)
To me: Alice Gould stands for a dual personality, kind of like Romulo and Remo. It's up to the viewer to decide if her more expressive/Romulo is her good side or bad side, and if her more introvert side/Remo is the other one. And when you have decided, it's Donadio who makes the final judgement.
And you can never be wrong. It's not about what is true in this story, but rather what's real for your. Therefor use the metaphors for your own true reality.
The Batman (2022)
Calling it slow is the problem
Stand alone, this Batman movie can not be compared with Nolan's Batman. Nolan kind of rewrited Batman by vissualy changing its whole set up.
To me this was kind of a mix between Burton's version and Nolan's version, in a way the director succeeded in not making it a copy of those two versions.
Slow pace? That's the problem due to the Marvel movies, Transformer movies,... you feel like you're in an unstoppable rollecoaster of non stop action. Dialogues in these movies are too fast, even interrupted by sussen events with a lot of action. You don't hear me crying out that marvel movies are bad, but this dark toned, slow builded up Batman movie never bored me either. Something slower is not necessarily boring.
When watching this Batman just expect a slower, yet good rollercoaster.
Eternals (2021)
Something different, always difficult to adapt
When I saw different trailers, I wasn't positive because this was totally different from the other marvel movies.
When I saw the movie itself, I must say it was easier to adapt to all differences. The story was not too complex but the whole setting and charater play made it well thought.
I don't understand its low score. The movie had - unlike more recent marvel movies - a constant pace.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Good movie but too woke
It starts really good. The main characters is good casted. Slow moments aside, the story was not too predictable. And now, the WOKE part: Ben Kikgley's role was misfitted, really not necassary to fil it in like this.
