Your Honor (2020)
Started OK
This series started ok but it should have stopped at Season1. It was done. The story was told and had come full circle in the last few minutes of Season 1 Episode 10.
But our glutinous watching habits meant Season 2 had to be created. First 5 episodes we had to wait for Brian Cranston to receive a bigger pay cheque before he cleaned up his horrible beard.
The storyline became stupid. Aside from the difficulty of following who hates who and what the heck they are all fighting about, we have a baby born and brought into the series. The problem is, the baby's age does not match the storyline and timeframe.
Have stopped watching after Episode 7. Cannot be bothered finishing the season.
The Night Agent (2023)
It's ok
Every now and again it's good to watch a series where not a lot of thinking is required. The Night Agent doesn't require much thinking. It's harmless but not much substance. As a teacher it is reminiscent of something teenage boys would right. The storyline and language are both cliched and full of plot holes.
Locked doors that seem to take big guys ages to push open. Guns with silencers. Obvious bad guys walking the streets of Washington in trench coats and guns strapped to the leg and an overzealous use of the "f" word.
Probably the most irritating part of the show is the FBI boss who speaks like she is a robotic character from Futurama. She would also be the dumbest boss in any spy series.
Dear Edward (2023)
Beautiful
An endearing series. Has prompted me to now read the book. The story wrapped up but certainly could be extended for a second season with any luck.
Most episodes have a mix of emotions, enough to get you feeling sad and happy.
Most of the characters had depth and their complexities unfolded as the series went on. The actors owned their characters and did fantastic jobs at portrayed them throughout the series.
While not having read the book, I imagine the story onscreen is closely aligned to that of the book.
Well worth watching. A fair amount of swearing which means it is not advisable for under 13.
Last Light (2022)
Wasted 5 hours
After waiting with anticipation for this mini series to start, it is a bitter disappointment. What could have been a really good story line was spoiled by cardboard characters, cardboard acting, and an incredible number of plot holes.
At times it felt like the script had been cut randomly so that the five episodes fitted into five one hour slots. At the end of Episode 4, the blind child was missing, but at the start of Episode 5 he had been found, just like that.
If the real MI6 is run by someone as dumb as the character portrayed in this series then we are in huge trouble.
It took until Episode 3 for Matthew Fox's character to have an epiphany and realise perhaps when he was in uni he may have created the formula to destroy oil. It didn't occur to him in the first two episodes. Also, apparently when he and Tobias "were kids" at uni (25 years ago) ... Matthew Fox looks old. His character looks portrayed as at least 50/55 ... sorry, 25 years ago they were not kids.
The organisation responsible for "destroying the world" still relied on a massive bank of computers and other technologies to control everything. And Tobias, who pronounced that we are killing the world with fossil fuels that spew CO2 into the air, smokes in several scenes - is that not a contradiction?
Joanna Froggart's character (conveniently) drops medication but happens to be rescued by a "refugee" who escaped "some civil war" and just happened to be a nurse who knew exactly how to crush some Panadol to make a new version of the medication that a special eye doctor had laboured over for years, so the blind child wouldn't lose the quickly degenerating cells in his retinas.
The only reason I have given this poor attempt for entertainment two stars is that there is a good scene in Episode 4 which involves a bike chase and a good old fashioned sleight of hand body double swap. Otherwise I unfortunately could not wait until the fifth instalment was done so I didn't leave the series hanging over my head.
And if the series hadn't already been spoiled enough, the last 60 seconds was absolutely cringeworthy.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
So dull
This is by far the worst movie in the entire MCU. Plot holes. Actors who look bored. New characters introduced with no explanation. Dumb "creatures" which are supposed to be scary but look like something from the kids department of K-Mart. So-called madness that only occurs across three universes. An evil Scarlet Witch who decides to not be evil any longer because her kids cried.
This movie can be summed up in one word: horrible.
In Spider Man No Way Home Dr Strange tells Peter when he reverses the spell no one will remember Spider Man, including Dr Strange. Ten minutes into the movie and America Chivaz makes mention of the multi-verse and Dr Strange says he's familiar and proceeds to tell her about none other than Spider Man. What the actual?
If I hadn't paid $15 for my ticket I would have left the cinema.
Blinded by the Light (2019)
Thoroughly enjoyable
What a thoroughly enjoyable movie. Good feel and a delight to sit down and watch amid the doom and gloom of the world at the moment.
Great script. Great performances. Thank you.
New Gold Mountain (2021)
Intriguing but not enough
Was looking forward to watching this series and stuck with it, but only just.
The script, and subsequently the spoken language, feels like it was written for high school students. In fact, it could easily have been developed to supplement the Australian history component of the Australian Curriculum.
Not enough mystery and not enough explanation of the Chinese culture of the time. Although it was interesting that the PC brigade hadn't put their stamp all over it with the language used to describe the different cultures in the story. Some of the Australians were far too over the top and much of the swearing felt like a 15yo was at the core of the written dialog.
Knowing the series was filmed at Sovereign Hill should have meant authenticity. Unfortunately being filmed somewhere that is basically a theme park of sorts, visited by many Australians, made the series feel like it was filmed "at Sovereign Hill", meaning it felt like it was on a film set rather than natural.
Hopefully Australian productions will continue but with a bit more thought about the intended audience.
