Play for Today: 'Nuts in May' (1976)
This is a terrible and tedious film
I will preface this review by saying that I normally love British Comedies. I guess this was supposed to be a comedy, but I couldn't really tell, because nothing funny happened. I didn't laugh once.
I agree with Chris. This movie was absolutely terrible. It was slow, boring and ridiculous. And it was practically impossible to understand any of the actors through their incredibly thick accents.
The two main characters are pathetic. She's a twit, and he's a pain in the ass. They pitch their tent in a camp site and then they roam around doing nothing, and then get into squabbles with their fellow campers.
When they started singing the same lines of a song over and over again, I couldn't believe it. Was the director actually trying to torture us?
Take my advice, and do NOT waste your time or money on this tedious piece of crap.
Better Late Than Never (2016)
So far I'm disappointed in this show.
I was looking forward to this, but so far I'm disappointed. I like all of these guys, but they're trying WAY too hard. They're doing WAY too much slapstick, and acting like fools. They should just relax and behave like normal people and not caricatures. I cringe at their antics and can tell how the "ugly American" thing got going.
And you can tell that the whole thing is staged. About the only good scene was the karaoke in the bus.
Worse yet, the show keeps hitting us over the head with "explanations" every two minutes. Please! We're not stupid.
Too bad this show can't be really good like Michael Palin's "Pole To Pole", or his other travel shows.
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
I Love This Film!
This is a very original action film with great writing, direction, stunts, special effects and acting. It gives numerous homages to the great spy films of the 60's and 70's, especially the Bond films, while simultaneously turning some of their conventions on their heads.
The opening scene set to "Money For Nothing" was excellent. I also enjoyed Galahad kicking the s**t out of the thugs in the pub. But the best scene by far was the very colorful exploding heads of the bad guys set to "Pomp and Circumstance"! It sort of reminded my of the Staja scene in "A Clockwork Orange", which was set to the same music. That one made me laugh out loud.
But the best thing was that the villain was an Eco Terrorist who thinks more about the planet than human beings. As the late, great George Carlin once said "The planet's not going anywhere. We are." And he's impaled and dies at the end. Too bad Eggsy couldn't have taken out Al Gore at the same time!
I'm definitely on board for the sequel!
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
A long, dull, pointless car/truck chase through the desert.
This movie was technically brilliant, and deserved all the technical Oscars it won.
I had not planned to see it because I already saw this movie 30 years ago in the original Road Warrior. Why watch it again? But then I was surprised to discover that it was nominated for best picture, so I decided to watch it on DVD.
To my dismay it was just a long, dull, pointless car/truck chase through a generic desert. It basically just a remake of Road Warrior, and not as well done (technical brilliance aside).
As to the actors: Charlize Theron was good as Fuiosa, but I never did buy Tom Hardy as Max.
Overall I was disappointed.
The Lobster (2015)
This is a terrible and cruel movie.
This is a terrible movie which makes absolutely no sense. It's slow, plodding, poorly written and acted, pretentious, and incredibly cruel.
People are sent to a sadistic and fascist "hotel" where they must find a mate in 45 days or the're turned into animals. The maid grinds her posterior on the groins of male guests to arouse, but not satisfy them. WTF?
If he fails, David (Colin Farrel) wants to be turned into a lobster. This is a crustacean which crawls on the bottom of the ocean eating dead and decaying material, and if caught, is thrown alive into a boiling pot to be eaten.
It's also very cruel. A donkey is shot in the opening scene. A woman kicks a dog to death for no apparent reason. Later a woman is blinded because she showed affection for David. I suspect that this was supposed to be a dark comedy, and a parody on love and relationships. But cruelty is NOT funny.
I think perhaps the director is trying to resolve some emotional issues from his childhood. Maybe his mommy didn't let him have a dog, and he's taking it out on all of us. I will never watch another one of his films.
Please do yourself a favor and do NOT see this movie. Save your money to go watch a good movie, or at least one which is not this cruel.
Snowpiercer (2013)
What a piece of crap!
Where do I begin? Nothing made sense in this turd.
Mankind sprays a chemical into the atmosphere and the whole world freezes solid? What garbage! This is a Green Wacko's wet dream. There has always been climate change, but there is no proof that man has anything to do with it. So called "climate change" is a hustle designed to exert CONTROL and extort money.
But back to this idiotic film. If the world really did freeze (doubtful), why would you waste energy running a train? Use the energy to warm some underground bunker or something.
Further WTH moments: A forty foot high aquarium in a train? They put a man's arm outside to freeze so they could smash it? New Year's Eggs?
And wtf was that crazy classroom scene about? And towards the end of the film a bunch of people get killed, and then suddenly revive and continue fighting? And the model work at the end was terrible. It screamed "Lionel Train Set"!
This was a terrible movie. If I had seen it at the cinema, I would have demanded my money back. That's two hours of my life I'll never get back again.
AVOID THIS MOVIE!
Straight Time (1978)
How can I go wrong watching this film? Well, I found out.
Wow! Where do I begin? This movie had a 7.4 rating on IMDb, and it had Dustin Hoffman, Theresa Russell, Gary Busey, Jake Busey, Harry Dean Stanton, and Kathy Bates. How could I go wrong?
Well I found out. I should have know it wasn't going to be good since it was filmed in the 70's. I don't know what it is, but there seems to be something fundamentally wrong with movies shot in that decade.
The movie had some really stupid dialogue, and one of the most awkward seduction scenes I've ever seen. I mean they just looked at each other for what seemed like two minutes. I found myself wondering "How do they keep from busting out laughing?" I was about to.
The music was loud and terrible (very 70's), and Hoffman's actions just were not believable. He was stupid and greedy, and I just could not buy him as a tough guy. I guess he'll always be Benjamin Braddock to me. And Theresa Russell was very wooden. The only characters worth their salt were Harry Dean Stanton and M Emmet Walsh.
And I couldn't fathom what the heck the final line was supposed to mean. This was a very disappointing film to me.
