Congo (1995)
Hilarious and Wonderful
I'm not going to spoil anything so you can read the synopsis about the plot.
So i was 20 years old when I first saw this movie. The public Internet was like 5 years old. I was young and impressionable. While the science of the movie is somewhat implausible, it still has a lighthearted story.
Great VFX for its time. There are a few memorable moments of humor. Tim Curry is hilarious as Mr. Homolka, and the cake scene with Captain Wanta is one of the funniest scenes that has stuck with me all my life.
The gorilla is well acted, and is adorable. Linney and Walsh do their job well as leads. Hudson, Heslow and a few others do their job as well.
This is one of the gems from the 90s that you really want to watch, if you can keep away from Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or whatever.
Away (2020)
This is not sci-fi...
... and anyone going into this series thinking otherwise will be utterly disappointed. This is drama, about family and relationships. It just has a space backdrop in order to facilitate distance, and being apart from your loved ones. Yes, there are some sci-fi elements but those are scarce and are not what the show is really about. It's about people reaching for their dreams, and that life isn't always fair.
If you're still interested in the show knowing this, you won't be disappointed.
Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009)
I'm a cat person
Yes, my parents had a dog when i was young but i never really bonded with it that much, my siblings did though. However, i had a cat for 14 years in my adult life.
I can say this much though. I haven't cried this much since E.T. And that was about an alien from another world. Strange huh? Not really, this movie is about friendship, add in loyalty and a good soundtrack.
The fact that it's based on a true story makes it even more heartbreaking. Great acting from Gere and the supporting cast, but especially the dog(s).
See it, but bring some kleenex with you.
Freespace 2 (1999)
A sequel done right
Well,
After the hit that is Freespace, i was really looking forward to this. I was actually in the beta, testing multiplayer with Dave Baranec from Volition.
Let me tell you, this game is awesome. It's single player campaign is long and captivating. You really want to keep playing just to learn what will happen next.
Gameplay wise, this excels the previous entry. You have huge capital ships on both sides, with deadly beam weapons, and they also battle each other. You are cought in the middle.
Graphics are updated and the game looks really good.
Sound is great, you really feel you're hurting when you get hit by a beam, or an enemy fighter.
Voice acting is brilliant and well done. Ronnie Cox, Robert Loggia, Kurtwood Smith. Hello?
All in all, this is the combat space sim that every developer in the genre wants to mimic. This is how you get everything right in a game.
Event Horizon (1997)
Bland mixture
Well, i like sci-fi movies that are true to their nature. This is a mixture of sci-fi and gory zombies from hell, basically. This was in an age where directors wasn't really sure of what to direct. Always mixing different genres to come up with something new. Nah, this film did not succeed with that.
The film is okay in it's production values, some of the actors are decent. But all in all, nah...
Stardust (2007)
Captivating
This is a fairy tale about fantasy, humor, and love. Rarely do we see these elements combined together in a movie this way. There are usually always war and slaughtering involved to tell the tale/story in a fantasy world.
With all the wrongs going on in our world, this is just what we need. A love story that will make the human heart tingle with warmth, and respect love for what it is, something truly amazing.... And maybe, just maybe we can all learn something from it.
I mainly concern myself with the story in any tale, whether a movie or a computer game. Graphics/effects etc are not so important to me. So here are some of my character remarks:
Claire Danes: Is absolutely adorable as Yvaine. Cute, funny and vulnerable to the new world she finds herself in.
Charlie Cox: I can't say very much about him since i've never seen him in a movie before. But he is perfect for the role.
Robert De Niro: Is a good as always, complementing on his comedy streak from his Meet the parents performances, which i personally like.
Michelle Pfeiffer: I always knew she had a mean streak when i first heard her say "I'm Catwoman" in Batman Returns. She excels in her role as villain.
Ian McKellen: Is a great actor/voice actor and brings a softness to the prologue and epilogue with his soft/English-accent voice.
Supporting Actors: Also very well cast, no complaints here.
Deepest respect to the writers of this wonderful story, and the director for making this a warm, and lovable movie to remember for a long time to come.
May you all live happily ever after.
Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Mysteries of the Sith (1998)
An okay game.
I would like to comment on the multiplayer part. It has some great locations from the original Star Wars movies, such as the death star throne room and the carbon freeze chamber in cloud city.
These things make up for the minor defects that the single player campaign had. But it's still a good game.
I have spent many enjoyable hours with friends playing this game. I suggest you do the same, and may the force be with you :)
Schindler's List (1993)
An awful story told in a brilliant way...
I have to say this movie is one of those who have really touched me deeply. Imagine thousands of people being "slaughtered" because:
1. Their beliefs were/are different than others. 2. They had plenty of fortune. 3. They "looked" different. (Did they?).
Sounds stupid doesn't it?
Then imagine that all of this has actually happened for real, and that the reasons were among those that i have mentioned.
It is a horrible movie, but yet a masterpiece that we need to see to be reminded so that this does never happen again. I truly admire Oscar Schindler for what he did.
This is Spielbergs best movie ever, and he will probably never make a better one.
