Gran Torino (2008)
A perfect movie
Damn, where can i begin, Clint Eastwood gives a great performance in this drama, it follows the story of a korean war veteran and the movie focuses on the character development of Clints character, Walt Kowalski who from a bitter, racist and grumpy old man turns to a more wholesome and accepting person, a very well written character who you can understand his actions the more you watch this movie, why he chose to help the hmong family, his bitterness and his aggressiveness, there's not a single boring moment in the film from beginning to end, acting is very good, clint Eastwoods conversations with any secondary characters feels very natural, it's not only a movie about how dumb racism is but also a movie about a man who makes amends with his wrongdoings and mistakes, i highly recommend this movie to everyone, it has a little bit of everything, drama, some comedy and action.
Heru doggusu (2022)
Very underrated gangster movie
The movie follows the plot of a secret agent who joins the yakuza, there's barely any filler in the whole film, it is a little ober 2 hours and there is so much happening during that time that at some point it feels like a different movie. Cinematography was pretty nice and the acting was decent. The movie does require your attention to understand the film with how fast paced and how filled to brim it is with characters. The action sequences were very nice, reminded me of a more realistic John wick and they are not dependant on quick cuts and shaky cams. I liked plenty of things about this movie, my only complaint would be that this movie is so fast paced that it feels like it could be better as a series. At times i couldn't understand what was happening, other than that i recommend it to anyone who wants to see a nice film about the yakuza.
Cidade de Deus (2002)
A gut wrenching overlooked masterpiece
The movie is about the overlooked life in the slums of Brazil,it tells the real story of Rocket,a young boy who grew up chasing his dream, being a photographer, with the story of Rocket the movie establishes many interesting characters, played mostly by unknown actors who make it seem more convincing, the movie is gut wrenching, unforgiving, it doesn't shy away from showing you a lot of stuff that happens in there,it can be disturbing at times but the movie does not fail at anything, absolutely stellar acting, directing, pacing, writing, direction has a style on its own keeping the film entertaining, fast paced and not boring to watch.
An overlooked film that anyone who has seen it can agree that it's a masterpiece of foreign film, a must watch.
Oppenheimer (2023)
An absolute masterclass of filmmaking
Oppenheimer is a very ambitious film about Robert Oppenheimer's life(mostly about the Manhattan project). My expectations were huge and this film somehow managed to still exceed my expectations. Cillian Murphy delivers an incredible Oscar worthy performance that will keep you gripped throughout the film (which is full of amazing performances with the likes of Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon,Emily Blunt etc.). It respects the viewer and doesn't spoon feed you, instead jt lets the viewer observe in this slow burn of a movie until it reaches an amazing climax.
Absolutely incredible direction from Christopher Nolan(as expected),a very thought provoking film, I couldn't recommend it more.
American History X (1998)
Everyone Should Watch This.
The movie follows the story of two brothers involved in neo nazi and white supremacist movements. After serving 3 years in jail for ,the older brother tries to prevent his younger brother from following the same road and continuing the cycle of hate.
A pretty dark, depressing and disturbing at times film that is pretty different from most 1990s films about racism and prejudice. It is way more nuanced, its deeper and way more powerful. It is uncomfortable and hard to watch and simultaneously intriguing enough to make you want to watch more. Edward Norton also provides an oscar worthy performance in an overall very well acted and directed film.
Pâfekuto burû (1997)
Masterpiece
This movie is actually amazing, the plot follows the story of Mima,a pop idol who decides to become an actor. Throughout the film Mira starts losing her sanity after an unfortunate series of events are set to damage her and both Mira and the viewer starts questioning what is real and what is not. Movie actually left me pretty confused since it is open to so many different interpretations but i like finding new things that I didn't catch on. Definitely worth a second watch. Animation it's also pretty gorgeous. Soundtrack is also pretty catchy. An amazing movie that also inspired Black Swan, another film that i also adore!
The Batman (2022)
As good as i expected
Saw this movie an hour ago,it is a pretty dark probaply the darkest approach to batman in a DC movie and even though it is rated PG-13 the movie kind of did push that age rating to its limits. Actors were great,it was well shot and it manages to keep your interest throughout the whole film, the opening was very strong also, definitely one of my favourite in a comic book movie. The fight scenes were pretty entertaining and thats coming from someone who's can be easily bored and critical about action sequences in movies. Also it was very atmospheric, like i was there in this dark rainy and very dirty city. Thats some of the things i liked. It still isn't as good as The Dark Knight but it still is a pretty solid comicbook movie/detective thriller.
Beckett (2021)
Nice and entertaining
Being a Greek myself, from Ioannina i was pretty happy to see a foreign movie that was set in the north part of Greece,it felt surreal to see all these places that i had seen thousands of times in real life in a netflix movie. The scenery was beautiful as for the acting, the acting was decent. It is a more realistic action movie instead of your typical over the top action movie and i was entertained throughout the whole film. It had a few minor mistakes like when the characters traveled from Trikala to Athens by crossing the Rio adirio bridge which is not an efficient way to go to Athens. The movie also finished a little abruptly but still it is worth a watch if you have some spare time.
The Irishman (2019)
A great film that is too long
A gold movie that symbolises the end of an era,the golden age of mafia cinema probaply the last time we will see a collaboration between Robert De Niro,Al Pacino,Joe Pesci all of them in a movie directed by Martin Scorcese. A different movie than the others of its kind,it isnt a movie about mafia or family exactly, its more about growing old and the influence the choices you made in your life had on you. The cinrmatography is absolutely amazing, the acting is also amazing but the movie feels slower than it should be and it can definitely be an exhausting movie to watch especially if you dont really like mafia cinema. It may not be as good and entertaining to watch as GoodFellas,Scarface,The Godfather etc. But it still is a movie that had to be made.
Taxi Driver (1976)
A must watch
Taxi driver,a movie ahead of its time which gave inspiration to movies like joker. The cinematography is fantastic, the acting is amazing the movie feels pretty atmospheric and perfectly captures the feeling of loneliness. It may be disturbing at times to capture the grit of 70s NYC like murder and child prostitution but it still is considered on of the greatest movies of all time and rightfully so.
