Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Who is this for?
SPOILERS AHEAD
The first Doctor Strange and WandaVision were among my all-time favorite pieces of Marvel media. However, this movie is a frighteningly poor successor to both. Fans of Doctor Strange will find themselves disappointed, as the movie focuses very little on the titular protagonist, even though he serves as the point-of-view character for the movie. If you came expecting a resolution to the Mordo situation or perhaps? No. You will not get that here. MCU's primary Mordo is mentioned only briefly and almost like a joke to create some awkward comedy. How about his tumultuous interpersonal relationships? The movie seems to briefly suggest it will touch upon them in the course of the film, but it barely does. At least the cloak is still funny and Strange still does some visually impressive magic.
Fans of WandaVision, however, will possibly be disappointed for the greater part. This movie absolutely alters Wanda's trajectory as a character and drives it right into the ground. Remember how WandaVision was about processing grief and ultimately letting go? How Wanda, in the penultimate act of the show, decides to free the citizens of Westview when she realizes how much hurt she is causing to the people by indulging in her escapism, and ultimately, she even lets go of her perfect family to do the selfless thing and undo the damage she caused?
Yeah, no. Throw that right in the bin. In MoM, Wanda is an unhinged lunatic corrupted by the Darkhold, who wantonly kills fan-favorite characters and franchise icons in her selfish quest to get the family she sacrificed back. In the course of the film, she becomes an irredeemable horror monster, who, in the end, is defeated when she GASP SHOCK AND HORROR realizes she is the baddie, and proceeds to kill herself. That's right, folks. For those of you who thought that WandaVision was about coping with grief and finding a way to move past, with the possible set-up of reuniting Wanda and Vision later down the line? Hah. Tough luck. Even if Wanda were somehow to return, and I seriously doubt she will, she is now a multiversal mass murderer. Ain't that quirky?
In short, this movie is very mediocre and its only saving grace are some occasional witty moments, its atmosphere, and visuals. It is a movie that strains really hard to earn its rating while telling a rather shallow story which does the barest minimum with the characters.
Visually quite fancy, intellectually lazy. (Except for Strange's eye at the end. That thing looks like someone photoshopped it in and went very easy on the blending tool.)
Centaurworld (2021)
An Interesting Mixed Bag
Did not expect this to be a musical, however I was pleasantly surprised with the music. The story itself is also very good and offers some thoughtful themes and ideas. It is quite similar to the likes of Adventure Time in a good way. The odd blend of humor and serious atmosphere might not be for everybody, but I massively enjoyed it.
I will admit, the centaur characters were at times a bit ~much~ but Horse is an interesting protagonist and I really liked the greater mystery/theming behind the show.
The animation is very fun and mobile and I like the heavy contrast between the more silly aspects and the serious gritty stuff not only in tone but also music and visuals.
