Rick and Morty: Unmortricken (2023)
Best episode since s6e1
I'll be honest, while I've always deeply enjoyed the "canon-heavy" episodes, I was never emotionally invested in the Prime Rick and Evil Morty storylines, mostly because it never seemed like the writers cared that much either. That being said, I'm really impressed (by modern r&m standards) by how much this episode fleshed out Evil Morty as a character, and made him pretty interesting to follow, and even root for, especially as we see him interact with our regular duo in pretty amusing ways.
Rick finally gets his revenge but, predictably, feels empty inside. It's going to be interesting to see where he goes from here as a character, since the quest for revenge gave him some purpose for decades at this point. At the end of the day, the family (even Morty) is as healthy and happy as they've been the entire show, while Rick could be heading for an all time low, depending on how he processes the ending of this chapter in his life.
Awesome action throughout, especially the Box sequence, and consistently funny. Season 7 definitely feels like an improvement over 5-6, halfway through. Let's see where they take it from here.
Rick and Morty: Ricktional Mortpoon's Rickmas Mortcation (2022)
Pretty fun finale
Not the mind-blowing end to the season I think we were hoping for and certainly weaker than the season 5 finale, though this still delivers a pretty funny, well paced episode. Robot Rick was definitely a highlight and it's always nice to follow Morty's character development throughout the show. Despite suffering from much the same problems every recent episode displays like an over-reliance on metalanguage (self aware promises of future canon and plot points) and pop culture references (the whole episode is a star wars joke), this still delivered in a way that satisfied me, and it's certainly a good entry to the show.
Rick and Morty: Juricksic Mort (2022)
Too many pop culture references
I like the fact that this is less dependent on gross humor than most episodes these days and that this one attempted a real storyline beyond just the fun concept. I laughed out loud a couple times, but the fact that 80% of the jokes here are self referential or pop cultures references is a little nauseating, and feels like the writers have gotten really lazy. Most of the jokes here certainly pale in comparison to the first 3 seasons, and in general Season 6 might be worse than S5 for me so far. There are no awful lows like last season but also no true highlights beyond E1. I still like what they tried to do with this episode overall, and the last scene in the garage with Rick and Morty bumps this up a star for me.
