Marvel have gained the rights back to Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Ant-Man. These characters were the classic line-up of The Avengers.
This list shows how the individual movies reference each other and establish that these characters all live in the same shared Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU.
This list works on the assumption you have seen all the MCU films up to and including Thor: Love and Thunder, the Disney+ shows Ms. Marvel (Season 1), Moon Knight (S1), Hawkeye (S1), Loki (S1), The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (S1), WandaVision (S1), the TV shows Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D (S7), Agent Carter (S2), Runaways (S3), Cloak & Dagger (S2), Inhumans (S1), and the Netflix shows Daredevil (S3), Jessica Jones (S3), Luke Cage (S2), Iron Fist (S2), Defenders (S1), and The Punisher (S2).
THERE ARE THEREFORE POTENTIAL SPOILERS!

'Prometheus' is set in the same universe and its DVD extras suggest that Blade Runner is also in the same timeline. This would add the upcoming Blade Runner project and 'Soldier'; a "sidequel"/spiritual successor to Blade Runner.

Day of the Dead (2008)
Avoid
I was a bit hesitant to watch this but I liked the modern remake of 'Dawn of the Dead' so thought I'd give it a go as I was interested to see a modern take on the original's plot.
Despite the name, this film has nothing to do with the original.Instead you have the standard 'army sealing off a small town' plot, but despite a miscast Mena Suvari as a army general(!) and annoying stereotypical black guy it still looked like it had potential. This all disappeared as soon as the zombies turned up. There seemed to be no internal logic; is it airborne or passed on by bites?, why does everyone change at the same time?, why do people go from normal to covered in open sores in a split second?, why are zombies not only running but jumping about like the modern version of vampires?
By the end it was like watching a film based on a video game, and a bad one at that. Avoid.
L'ennemi public n°1 (2008)
Two Great Films
'Mesrine: Killer Instinct' (2008) and 'Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1' (2008) are two great films filmed back-to-back telling the life and crimes of legendary French criminal Jacques Mesrine. I'd never heard of him before these films came out but it seems he was a bit of a cult figure during the 60's and 70's, mainly due to his outrageous bank robberies and prison breaks.
'Mesrine: Killer Instinct' (2008) The first film shows his rise (descent?) into the criminal world and is the better of the two. Vincent Cassel is brilliant in the title role and Gérard Depardieu was also surprisingly good as a gangster boss. It all looks and feels authentic. The only criticism is that it occasionally feels a bit rushed as it jumps from location to location and exploit to exploit. Although this made sections a bit episodic it means the film is fast paced and always exciting/entertaining.
'Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1' (2008) The second film follows on from the first but as with any crime biopic (Blow, Goodfellas etc) the second half of the story is slower and not as much fun, as Mesrine suffers the consequences of his actions including estranged family members, more prison and ultimately his death. However the second film is still good, especially the final scenes which tie in brilliantly with the opening scenes of the first film.
Overall a great double bill – especially when you consider I watched them both back-to-back and was never bored or restless (even at a total time of over 3hrs 40mins).

Hunger (2008)
Grim but Good
Film about IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands in 1981 but although the film is bookended by some on screen text that puts it in its historical and political context, it is mostly concerned with the actions of the individuals involved – the guards and the prisoners.
For the majority of the film there is hardly any speech, you just see the very grim day-to-day reality - except for the key scene of the film which is a conversation between Sands and a priest which is done in two long, unmoving takes.
It's quite a powerful film, and very hard to watch in places. It reminded me of 'Downfall' in some ways – a good film but not one I'd want to see again anytime soon.
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Vastly Overrated
This was only the second time I've seen it but i think its vastly overrated. It starts off well with chaos and panic at a TV station, explaining the situation and then helicopter shots showing the scale of the outbreak. The refuelling stop is the best part of the film; its a shame the rest of the film didn't continue that mood. The setting in the Shopping Mall is a good idea but once they've set up their base its becomes pretty dull - mainly cos the zombies aren't scary or presented as any sort of threat. The make up isn't great - the zombies are a rather fetching pale blue(!) - hardly scary, just a bit lame. The vague comedy elements are poor and the film become dire once the biker gang turns up.
And everyone goes on about the social satire - yes its very blatant but having a message of social satire doesn't make it a good film. I think it should be plot first, social commentary second. It seems the director had a good idea of setting it in the mall and then it all falls apart.
In three separate places this week I've seen DotD described as the 'best Zombie film'. It clearly isn't - its not even the best zombie film by Romero (that would be 'Night Of The Living Dead'). This is an influential film and one to see if you like this genre but its actually not very good.
Moog (2004)
If you're at all interested in electronic music, check it out.
Documentary about Robert Moog, his synthesizer and its effect on music, as well as the general concept of electronic music.
I liked it.
It wasn't overlong, it was an interesting topic and Moog himself came across as a really nice guy (sort of like Brian Wilson without the breakdown).
It also featured interviews, concert footage and music by various artists such as Stereolab, Keith Emerson, Money Mark, Rick Wakeman, Sun Ra, Tortoise etc.
If you're at all interested in electronic music, check it out.
Hukkle (2002)
odd but good
Strange film focusing on the human, plant and animal life of a small Hungarian village.
At first i thought there was no real story or plot and it reminded me a bit of films like Bodysong or Naqoyqatsi. However, whereas those films put their images to music this one had no music or dialogue but instead focused on the sounds of life - such as animals, machines etc. You can certainly view this film in that stlye - and enjoy it because although those sort of films can lose your interest after a while Hukkle has great camera angles, close ups and superb editing which means it doesn't outstay its 75 minute running time.
But if you look deeper into the film there is a very subtle plot - as we see a body in a lake at one point and a policemen investigates it. However nothing is resolved and its almost as an aside but once i started thinking about it (or in my case reading about it) the more i want to watch it again!
A unique film.
American Splendor (2003)
quite good but quite different
It was quite good but also quite a bit different from what I expected.
I thought it was going to be a regular film but with comic book style framing and words (like it was in the title sequence). I wasn't expecting the post modern addition of the real people sections (especially when they were interacting with, and commenting on, the actors playing them) or the live action/2D animation combination either. I also thought they'd be more of a story (most likely the cancer thing) but it was all very low key. It reminded me of 'A Cock and Bull Story' in some ways.
I think I might have have enjoyed it more if I was familiar with the comics but I think I'll appreciate it more the second time around - now that I know what kind of film it is.
The Sorcerers (1967)
Sinister!
British Sci-Fi/Horror with Boris Karloff as a disgraced hypnotist who discovers a technique of mind control and so, together with his wife, starts living through an unknowing young bloke in swinging '6o's London.
I really enjoyed this. I really like how the film gets more and more sinister as it moves towards the finale. It was also very involving and unfolds at a good pace. Boris Karloff and Catherine Lacey are great as the elderly couple.
Its a very 1960's film, with its music and fashion (as well as the effects and slightly dodgy camera-work!) but this all adds to the appeal and it was interesting to see Karloff in a later role rather than the earlier ones he best known for.
Following (1998)
Very good
Christopher Nolan's first film is a 'no budget' black and white film about a unemployed writer who begins following strangers, which in turn leads to robbery and also violence. It is very good.
Like in his later film 'Memento' he doesn't present the story in a linear way. Instead it jumps around somewhat so you end up really sucked in trying to piece it all together and early, apparently random, shots take on significance as the film progresses. This style also means the twists are much more effective.
Definitely worth seeing if you get the chance (especially if you like his later work and/or Film Noir)
Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
not amazing but good
It was a lot different than i expected, things like the outrageously racist 'japanese' character, Hannibal from the A-Team as a leading man, the groovy party scene, and just generally the tone of the film.
The biggest shock to me was Hepburns character. I really didn't know anything about the film except the iconic image of her all dressed up and had formed my preconceptions of what that character (and consequently the story) would be like so wasn't expecting Holly Golightly to be as she was.
Overall it was pretty good, not amazing but good. It is a part of Hollywood history though so you should watch it.
L'armée des ombres (1969)
Overall good, but not great.
The third Jean-Pierre Melville film I've seen but also the least satisfying.
The plot was very interesting (French Resistance during WW2) and not something I've seen in a film before. However the film was too long and meandered a bit - unlike Le Cercle rouge which was long but gripping. One parachute scene showed the limitations of the time but there were two scenes that were outstanding - the first being when they are deciding the fate of a traitor and the other being the final part of the film.
Overall good, but not great.
Der Untergang (2004)
Well worth seeing...
German film about Hitler's last days in his bunker at the end of WW2.
This was nominated for an Oscar and i can see why - its a very interesting subject, not something WW2 films tend to concentrate on and it was interesting to see a German-made WW2 film. It looks really good - the reproduction of the period, the battle scenes, Bruno Ganz's performance as Hitler.
As it goes on and things get more desperate i got into it a lot more and the thing that affected me most were the suicides, the information about what happened to the people around Hitler (and discovering quite a lot of them only died a few years ago and one was still alive when the film was released) and also the modern day interview with Hitler's secretary that bookends the film.
Its quite long and a bit of a downer - not the sort of film i'd want to watch again anytime soon - but well worth seeing.
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
The best of the three
It could have been a disaster with all the different plot elements and the long running time but i thought Raimi weaved the stories together well. Although the film did at times feel episodic it was never boring or muddled. Its such a good ride i'll even forgive them changing their own story and saying Sandman was involved in Ben's death(!). For once Tobey Maguire's curious/comical face and expressions didn't put me off (like in the Train part of SM2). The only bad part of the film was the cheesy bar dance sequence (as unfortunate as the wrestling scene from SM1) and the usual "God bless America, look at me on a flag, isn't New York great" bit. Overall though, i thought it was very good - the best of the three Spider-Man films.
