Adaminte Makan Abu (2011)
Beautiful & Very energizing
On very few occasions does one's heart pour out after watching a movie. 'Adaminte Makan Abu' is made with such compassion and class that my words will go begging. The film is about an aged couple whose only wish is to pay a visit to Mecca. As pious Muslims, they have certain compulsions that puts them in an uncomfortable position with their friends, where a Hindu teacher, a Christian businessman and an orphan Muslim travel agent try to offer help to Abu and Aisu.
Even though Abu desperately wants to visit Mecca, he never fails to recognize his responsibility towards his wife and his society.
Setup with a backdrop in a rural village in Kerela, the movie is a beautiful journey of pain, love, compassion, forgiveness and brotherhood. Even though I am a staunch atheist and not a Keralite, I loved the movie for its originality and sincerity.
Apocalypto (2006)
return of the mondo
What strikes me most about this movie is the shear bravery of Mel Gibson to even think of this story telling to be a commercial Hollywood movie. The barbarism and rawness of ancient civilization showed might not as gory as late 70s Italian mondo films but definitely it has the will and purity of ancient mayan culture. Mel Gibson is not only brave but an awesome director to wrap this gory package in a pretty okay story line.
I personally didn't find this movie an absolute mega hit or a piece of art but definitely it deserves an audience for the bravery shown by the Mel Gibson.
I would not go in too much details of the story cos its very weak and nothing novel. I can sum it up by saying Apocalypto is result of a dream Mel Gibson had in which he saw Ruggero Deodato (director of cannibal holocaust) remaking Braveheart.
I am personally a huge fan of mondo movies so I kinda appreciated this effort to bring the realism of ancient existence to audience in such a grand way. Otherwise i wouldn't really say there anything new.
All in all, should see it once. And please be aware for some pretty cool shock cinema.
House M.D. (2004)
a medically philosophical drama
I am never a huge fan of TV series of any sort. Somehow the story telling is not even remotely close to cinematic anecdotes.
I recently saw the series of House and I should admit that sublimity and brilliance cannot be defined by a medium of entertainment. David shore proved that.
House is a medical television series with a new medical challenge every episode. Whats amazing is the center character of dr. Gregory house who is himself physically constrained. His philosophy vis-a-vis the medical syndrome of life and death give this serial an amazing platform to display metaphysical mind. Firstly I felt pity that such an amazing concept is being wasted by a television series but after a couple of episode, I guess there can be no better parallel to House.
Dr Gregory House's perpetual effort to perfection, mixed with his outlandish sadism and reassuring arrogance if fascinating. His wisdom and his inhuman individualism demands the director to be very smart in designing each episode, for it becomes too easy to detour from the ideological build up. But I must say, the serial has lived up to its expectation.
With every episode I can feel the series moving towards better story telling, experimental setups and mind blowing medical cases. Wrapping then around with the absolutely beautiful movie-like fabric has made this series an absolute must-watch. Dr Gregory House might go down the books of all time best characters.
To all movie lovers, and cinema fanatics, This TV series is a pretty good deal.
