Sanatorium (2013)
I actually quite liked it! The average Imdb rating should really be higher.
I thought this was actually pretty good for a found footage sort of film. Story was reasonable, acting was reasonable. Had some good scares. I think it's current imdb rating is fairly harsh and think its score should at the very least be a rating of 5 or above. I don't know what the people who gave this movie a really low rating were expecting... yes I admit, it doesn't have the same production value as the Ten Commandments or Oppenheimer or some movie like that, but it isnt the type of movie that needs to. I sometimes think people expect too much from these movies.
Anyway I thought they did a really good job. Well done guys.
Lake Mungo (2008)
One of the most boring movies I've ever watched
If you get 10 minutes in and hope its going to get better as the movie progresses... be warned... it doesn't. It just drones on and on and on like that for the entire movie. There are a couple of points in the movie where it has a chance to redeem itself however in the end these moments go nowhere and just end up adding to the drudgery of the whole thing.
In fact, they would have actually had to put a lot of effort into making the movie as boring as it is, possibly in a hope that it comes across as originality.
Pay heed to any of the reviews of 5 and under and you'll get a pretty good idea of what this movie is like. I definitely wish I had.
The Black Phone (2021)
Below average thriller. Definitely overhyped.
Somewhat boring and tedious with a lot of unnecessary dialogue that really had no impact on the plot. In fact, no real thought went into the writing at all, making for a very mediocre storyline that had no real punch. There was no build up of any real suspense and no real chill factor was ever achieved throughout the movie. The acting all round was pretty average and even though people will say how wonderful a job Ethan Hawke did, I felt that he was what let the movie down the most. I don't think he played a convincing part as the villain and he simply didn't instill any feeling of dread or forebode. His portrayal of the role was almost laughable in parts.
In this case a scary mask was simply not enough to carry the entire movie which is what it seems they've tried to do.
All up, the movie is quite a disappointment.
The Strangers (2008)
Climax was a big let down
I thought the movie traveled a little slow and I agree with other posts that the actions of the characters are a little unbelievable however I'm happy to give leeway here as this is what happens in a lot of horror movies and I sometimes even think it adds to the suspense as you just about leap out of your skin urging the characters to do something sensible like call the police. The really big issue from my perspective is you have this huge build up and great suspense and then sadly a cop out of an ending... in fact you could have not seen the ending at all and it wouldn't have made any real difference.
***SPOILER ALERT - WARNING I GO ON TO TALK ABOUT THE ENDING HERE SO PLEASE DON'T READ ON IF YOU REALLY WANT TO WATCH THE MOVIE**** ************************************** With this sort of movie where there is a lot of build up, the ending is critical, its got to have some kind of twist. And it was just starting to look that way too... they were starting to remove their masks and your sitting there on the edge of your seat going "here it comes", "here it comes"... "This is why I have been sitting here for an hour and twenty minutes... it all comes down to this".. and then.... nothing... no seeing bad guys faces.... no "oh my god its you!!" coming from the good guys... just bad guys stab good guys.... bad guys leave... credits roll. Just me left sitting there with a dumbfounded look on my face and hand outstretched in the air in disbelief. I would have even preferred something unoriginal or ridiculous for the twist instead of nothing eg. The bad guys end up being one of their friends, the bad guys end up being aliens, the bad guys end up being part of a new reality TV show in which its all just a setup..... Anything!! Just anything instead of nothing!!!!! **************************************
I'm sorry but the ending is a cop out of the worst kind by the writer and director and unfortunately ruins the whole movie and makes the whole movie not worth watching.
The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
One of the worst movies ever made....
I just like to start by saying that I never write comments on IMDb regarding movies however this would have to be the most pointless, boring, crass, poorly directed movie I have seen for a very, very long time that I thought I would make the effort to warn others. Not only did this movie not make me laugh or entertain me in any facet, it ended up making me increasingly angry as it droned on, to think that I had actually spent money on it. I am also blown away by other user comments that score this movie incredibly high which in my opinion because this Wes Anderson has a cult following of people who are prone to add votes and comments to IMDb that it has been given an overinflated overall vote in IMDb. I think you could put a video of a pot of coffee boiling for two hours in front of some people, say its directed and written by Wes Anderson and they will still write in and say what a great and wondrous journey it was and give it 9 out of 10. I probably think this movie might deserve slightly higher than a "1"... however after seeing some people give this 10/10 I thought it would help to even things out. I have seen other Wes Anderson movies and found them enjoyable however this particular movie was pathetic and should be avoided at all costs.
