Run Sweetheart Run (2020)
Spoiled by over the top messaging
This film is a real shame. It had the makings of a decent thriller but the heavy handed #metoo messaging ruins the immersion. Every man in it is irredeemably evil / stupid even when it makes absolutely no sense from a character motivation viewpoint. Rather than spending time on a plot it lurches from one evil misogyny trope to the next, sexist boss, man fondling on the tube, evil white billionaire, evil white male cop, selfish former boyfriend etc. At the end of the film all you are left thinking is damn who hurt you re the writers.
You really don't have to hit your audience in the face with your message in every scene.
Slumberland (2022)
A great surprise, as it's surprisingly great
I didn't really have high expectations for this but I was completely wrong.
The film is frankly quite beautiful, the cinematography is amazing, it's surprisingly emotional (the good kind where it allows the audience to actually decide what to feel about the film rather than telling them what they should feel), the soundtrack is wonderful both uplifting and haunting in places.
And the well written script brings the best out of a very talented cast without decending into cringeworthy kids film tropes such as endless fart jokes, all male characters being stupid, and irritating talking animals that seems to plague modern Hollywood.
A really magic adventure for kids and adults alike.
Boxing Day (2021)
Great Christmas feel good movie in the spirit of love actually
Really enjoyed this film.
It's been ages since they made a really great Christmas movie and this one really hits the spot. It has parallels with classics like love actually and my best friends wedding whilst still staying true to itself.
The acting was on point, soundtrack was amazing and feel good factor was there in full effect.
A great night out in the run up to Christmas.
FirstBorn (2016)
Good watch
I enjoyed this, some nicely spookie moments and good cast, surprisingly realistic, and some good plot twists
