Petrovy v grippe (2021)
Gritty and Dreamy
This intriguing film starts off seeming like a day-in-the-life story of a comic book artist whose family is struggling and whose life has its share of challenges. Petrov is not feeling well: his entire family are suffering from flu during a pandemic (a concept all audience members can surely relate to) and he gets sicker as the day goes on. The film's realistic narrative and verité-style gradually give way to a story that weaves in memory, dream and fantasy in a subtle and compelling way. Much like its titular protagonist, this film has a gritty exterior that gradually reveals a soulful heart. I found it very haunting.
In the Earth (2021)
A chilling folk horror tale
With a mysterious pandemic as a backdrop, two scientists enter an English woodland to check up on one of their colleagues, who has been experimenting with the forest's unique energies. Before they find their colleague, they meet up with a reclusive man who has been living close to the land for some time. This film explores themes that Wheatley fans will recall from A FIELD IN ENGLAND and KILL LIST: bits of rural folklore, earth mysteries and pagan mysticism all play a part, but ultimately the horror lies in the human capacity for self-preservation.
