Arcane: League of Legends (2021)
Best show in a long time
We don't watch a lot of tv series in my home. And after being disappointed with the horrible production value of the Wheel of Time series (I couldn't watch any more after Ep. 5), I saw a comment saying it would have been better if there was a faithful animated adaptation of WoT using the art style of Arcane. So I put Arcane on for a minute, just to see what they were talking about... that minute turned into the entire episode, then the next, then all the way to the end!
***THIS IS INCREDIBLE STORY TELLING!***
Clever cinematography turns what would be average shots into awesome shots; and what would have been above-average shots into EPIC shots! In fact, I don't think there was one single shot in the entire season that wasn't framed for maximum effectiveness. In the first scene I knew this was going to be a visual treat after seeing the lighting, and the way the camera pan was shifting perspective of the structures.
There was a perfect mix of cinematography and world building! A lot of care was put into how much of the world was dished out at a time. It reminded me of watching Star Wars A New Hope for the first time, how they never wasted time "showing off" the environment they worked so hard to build, and would just stick with the story. It literally had me hooked, so that I wanted to see more and more.
But the cinematography & world building would mean nothing without the third part of the trinity: Plot/Character Development (Yes, I lump the two "developments" together, because they are intertwined & completely dependent of each other). Plot & Character development ARE the story, and Arcane put the story first. After the first episode introduced me to the clever world building, and the way the art was directed onto the screen, the story was brilliantly written to keep me wanting to know what happens to these characters! I don't scream on roller coasters. I don't applaud a musician until they're done playing. But Arcane stole dramatic "NNNOOO!'s" from my lips at certain crucial points, because I was already heavily invested in the story and characters. I didn't shed a tear, but I could see how many people could have. It hits in the feels, and knocks you off your heels.
Arcane not only earned 10 stars from me, but made me feel compelled to spend time to write this review, even though it won't mean anything to anyone other than myself. If you made it this far into reading this, just stop and go watch it.
...oh, and get ready to click on the 10th star!
RiffTrax Live: MST3K Reunion (2016)
Dreams came true
This is some of the best riffing out there!
Sure, Mike and Joel go waaay back, but having them riffing together was a dream come true for so many fans!
Each short film was hilarious, but the "girls only" segment was great.
If you're a fan of MST3K, Cinematic Titanic or Rifftrax, you don't want to miss one second of this!
Mystery Science Theater 3000: Avalanche (2017)
Best of MST3K
As a fan of MST3K since the early 90's, I can honestly say I've never laughed so hard during any other episode as I did in this one. So much that I felt obligated to make an account on IMDB just to give this episode the 10 stars it deserves.
My wife had a swollen tooth at the time, and it was like torture for her due to laughing so much.
