Can I Tell You A Secret? (2024)
Maybe this would have been enlightening 10 years ago
I agree with the other reviewer who had said this documentary is very shallow. It touches on catfishing, stealing online identity and other aspects of social media that have been so much spoken about it really is rather infuriating and also surprising that grown up people should a) fall for it, b) be so shallow and naive to be posting EVERYTHING about themselves on social media and then appear surprised when they get targeted. By no means am I saying the perpetrator actions can be justified, it's just that this is a simple, basic level stuff that children should be aware of nowadays. The victims here are claiming social media helps them know who they are, which, really, gives you an insight into what to expect. It is disappointing that grown people are so unaware of realities outside of their "like" count, and the story is really not TV worthy. It's the same story you'll have seen on several TV shows, heard about on podcasts, and, unless you are a teenager, you can guess what's happening. One episode would have been sufficient.
Ricky Gervais: Armageddon (2023)
Time for Ricky to retire
Ricky has become a mirror image of those old singers and performers who live on their past glory, imagining they're still good although they are no longer able to create nor perform anything anywhere near as good as they could before.
Watching this show was like watching an old uncle tell jokes that he thinks are clever and edgy, when in actual fact they are anything but. Simple and lazy, self indulgent performance what delivers nothing of value other than, of course, extra income for Ricky. If he makes another one of those, he will soon become a joke himself. Time to take your cash and retire, you're past it. Overall, shockingly poor and disappointing.
A Haunting in Venice (2023)
The worst one so far, a let down that never picks up
I generally love a murder mystery, and while I didn't think the Death on the Nile or the Orient Express were phenomenal, they were enjoyable to watch nonetheless.
This one, however, was way worse. The writing was pretty bad from the start, leaving both the conversations and acting boring to watch and difficult to engage with. Fey and Reilley's acting leaves a lot to be desired, they both appear wooden and unnatural. Perhaps Fey leans too much into her comedic and sketch act persona, which doesn't do well in this movie. Reilley's character and acting are so cliché that it is unpleasant to watch. Other characters aren't much better, perhaps it was just a bad combination of actor selection and writing, and it doesn't work well.
Overall, the film starts slow and boring and it never picks up, leaving the audience to endure a tedious experience that never really sucks you in but is interrupted by watching the clock, waiting for it to end. What a shame.
The Black Phone (2021)
One of the best films this year
Executed perfectly. Even without knowing whose story it is based on, you can pick up on King like vibes. Like father, like son. Only unlike the mostly failing interpretations of King's books, Hill's story translated into the screen perfectly. The cast is fantastic, the story is great. It was the first time in years that watching this genre of film I actually cared for the characters, which added the tension and suspense.
Absolutely brilliant. 10/10.
The Irregulars (2021)
Pretty dreadful
It's pretty dreadful, it really is. The acting is that of a school drama play, the relationships between characters and the dialogue are clearly written to entice young teenage audiences, and it feels as if it was written by a teenager. To say that the characters are one dimensional is generous, it's clichéd and it feels like a half harted attempt to create a modern take on a classic, but it has a quality of a schoolboy scribble on a napkin.
Inconsistencies and a truly absurd plot don't make it enticing to watch and if you get a feel it's not great in the first five minutes after that awful music choice hits you right in the face, then believe you me, it doesn't get any better. Save yourself some time, eye rolls and yawns.
Very disappointing and an absolute waste of time and money.
Don't Breathe (2016)
Utterly disappointing
I really don't understand where all the good reviews come from.
The film is so full of plot holes and stupidity, it's just another slasher that should have gone straight to DVD release.
Without giving any spoilers, I just want to say the director should have learnt a bit more about blind people before just making one up. Great sense of smell... shoes...Not cigarettes/weed though?! Great sense of hearing...but Not the barking of the dog nor noises outside? The dog's behaviour is very strange. Does he fall asleep every few seconds just to randomly disappear and reappear when the director runs out of ideas?
And the kids..the stupidity and predictable behaviour is so frustrating you wish them all to die to make this disaster of the film end sooner. Absolute rubbish.
Dinner for Schmucks (2010)
Don't waste your time. Seriously, DON'T!
Don't, seriously, DON'T waste your time. If there's anything in the world you could rather be watching or doing, don't chose this film. It's must not only be one of the worst and poorest films of the year, but one of the worst films ever made.
I won't even try and bother comparing this to the original French film. There's no point. Not only there isn't really anything in common between these two films, the American version would make you think the original must have been a real disaster if the remake is such a lousy arrempt.
It's so stupid, it's not even funny in the slightest. Cringeworthy, yes. Funny? No. Characters are not likable or believable, people like that do no live in this world. Anywhere. It's just wrong. What a waste of money and time!
Breaking and Entering (2006)
I expected much more than this
I went to see the film yesterday, expecting something very special - it is easy to understand when the cast and director is such a brilliant bunch of talented people. But something went wrong. I am not sure when the story turned the wrong way but it didn't feel right nor real or sincere anymore. Quite a disappointment, really. I think there was something incomplete and insincere about Will's and Amira's love story. Too predictable? Not enough feelings? Anyway, Jude Law,Robin Wright Penn and Martin Freeman give a good performance. But that's it. If you expect real life drama, real feelings or something that will keep your thoughts captured even when you leave the cinema - this is the wrong film. Maybe I had too much expectations but that is not surprising when you see names like that on the poster. Juliette Binoche disappointed me this time. All the others act great but that was just not enough.
