Survivor (2000)
5 stars and fading
I gave it 5 out of 10 because of the years past. But this show has become way too woke. I don't need a lecture each week about gay pride, ME TOO, my pronouns, and other social issues. I'm sure if season 41 ever airs Critical RACE theory will creep into the cast. Bye bye Survivor you had a nice run.
I used to love this show because of the game play, now it seems each season has some big reveal about something. The season where the one woman complained about someone touching her was ridiculous. The whole show is nothing but people running around in underwear, sleeping huddle next to each other and grabbing each other during challenges constantly. But we had to be lectured on ME TOO nonsense while they constantly show people rubbing each others necks, doing yoga in underwear and even flirting with each other. How can you sign up for this show then act surprised when this happens?
Sorry but this show probably should hand it up at 40 seasons and enjoy the first 20 seasons as the golden years.
Great White (2021)
What a great idea for a movie
I am surprised NO ONE ever thought of making a movie about a great white shark.
This just screams ORIGINAL IDEA!
The Matrix (1999)
Changed sci-fi movies.
1999 was such a year, think about it. This movie, Fight Club and the Sixth Sense all came out and changed the way cinema was made. Each one of them changed and refreshed the tired old telling of movies. Each one was so unique and fresh it breathed life back into cinema. It also was the beginning of true Home Theater systems becoming a reality. I remember buying my first DVD player and a 5.1 surround sound system to go with my "state of the art" 36 inch HDTV when this movie was released on DVD. This movie came with my DVD player and it is still the bench mark I used whenever I buy a new piece of equipment or have to move and rewire my equipment. I jump right to the gun battle scene in the hallway and watch to make sure everything is working.
I just watched the 4K version on my Samsung 75" TV and when I buy a new 8K 85" TV later this year I will do the same again. This movie is timeless and fantastic. Unfortunately they made two more of these movies instead of stopping at the perfect conclusion. I do not think 22 years later I've ever watched the other two movies to completion they are just so bad. I wish the Matrix sequels and the last three Star Wars movies were never made, but that is a different topic.
This movie still is fresh 22 years later!
Side Out (1990)
I agree with Latz66 for the volleyball part ... the movie was okay outside of that.
Latz66 nailed the volleyball part in their review. It was ridiculous. I grew up playing on the beaches of NJ and even met my wife playing in the JSVBA in competitive 2x2 doubles. I started playing in high school, played in college and on the beach in tournaments until my 30s. I still play competitively today (at 53). I was 22 when this movie came out and thought, why not. Then I watched it and had to do a huge face palm when I saw the volleyball scenes. Seeing so many "bumps" over the net was laughable, the blatant carries on sets, the magical jumps by C. Thomas Howe way over the net...
The real volleyball players that were in this movie Randy Stoklos, Sinjin Smith, Steve Timmons (who won two gold medals in 84/88), Mike Dodd (who lost to Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes (also in this movie) in the first ever Olympic Beach volleyball game), and many other real players ... was a nice touch to give a nod to what these guys really do but their acting was ... wow, just bad.
Karch Kiraly was the only guy not in this movie from that era and he is probably the best ever male beach volleyball player. He paved the way for the sport of beach volleyball that later Misty May and Kerri Walsh starred in.
Now to movie ...
C. Thomas Howe and Peter Horton? Really? At least C. Thomas Howe was in good shape but Howe was 5'10" and Horton 6'1". Not that they couldn't play at those heights but the real players in this movie were all around 6'4" or taller. They would have dominated these two but I'll give Hollywood a pass on this because the acting scenes by the real players were atrocious and they needed someone with Peter Horton's depth to pull off Zack Barnes.
As far as the story ... typical late 80's early 90's B level movie. Lots of bikinis to keep the boys interested and shirtless men to keep the girls interested. One review on here compares C. Thomas Howe to Jesus which I think it a bit of a HUGE stretch but it's your typical root for the underdog story with the typical Hollywood ending. If you have never played volleyball competitively the movie is fine to watch, if you have played, just bite your tongue and enjoy the scenery.
Legends of the Fall (1994)
I love history and this wraps the story around history, so much better than today's nonsense
I'm so sick in 2021 hearing about how the United States past was so evil, horrible, how this group is privileged over that group, blah blah blah.
The history of this country (like any other country in the world) is COMPLICATED. Name me ONE country in the history of recorded history that doesn't have its scars or transgressions. None are innocent. But when I see stories like this I am reminded that these people lived through hard times way harder than any of the groups today claiming to be "oppressed". Today if you don't have have a free $1,000 smart phone you are oppressed. It sickens me that we live in so many comforts today (even in a pandemic) because of the sacrifices these people made.
Now onto the movie. First and foremost it's a great story with some great acting. The main actors, Hopkins, Pitt, Quinn, Thomas and Ormond are all fantastic. The story wrapped with two brothers being pulled into WW1, the Montana countryside, the love stories all make this well worth your 2+ hours.
But the cherry on top of this movie is the music by James Horner (RIP). Horner just like in Dances with Wolves nailed it. The beautiful violins with the Montana back drops (even though it was filmed in Alberta) ... amazing.
Sleeping with Danger (2020)
Julia Roberts just called ...
She says, Sleeping with the Enemy wants it's royalties.
