Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Decide for yourself
I can't help but wonder if there are ulterior motives behind some of the negative reviews here. I'm not saying that everybody will love it but I question whether many of the over the top negative reviewers actually saw the movie.
The characters were everything I imagined they would be brought to life. Luke Evans was particularly excellent as Gaston. The sets, the costumes, the music....it all fit perfectly.
We didn't go to this movie expecting deep character development, intense dialogue and/or state of the art CGI effects. We had our imaginations and this movie to inspire them. Imagination has no threshold. It's too bad so few people have one or use theirs anymore.
Don't panic about the so called gay scene. If you look down for a second or blink, you will likely miss it.
Four Weddings (2009)
Just wrong
My daughter and I started watching this series when she announced her engagement to be married in six months. I thought it would be a great show to wedding ideas from and I will give it that--it was. Several of her decorations and activities came from ideas generated from this series.
But that is unfortunately the ONLY positive thing I have to say about the show. The show features four brides who go to each others weddings and give them scores for food, venue, dress, and overall experience. There is absolutely nothing scientific in the scoring and no possible way of ensuring that the scoring is fair (no, not even the "rate the weddings in order" section). Scores are usually dependent upon things that have nothing to do with weddings in general and more on personal bias. For instance there is one bride who scores a wedding ridiculously low because she is a vegetarian and there was meat served. There's another episode where one girl is allergic to peanuts and eats something that she didn't realize had peanuts inside so she scored her next to nothing. I could probably list another hundred examples of that.
God forbid someone doesn't want alcohol or a dance at their wedding and when did a cocktail hour complete with another five courses become an expected part of a proper wedding? No wonder the average budget for these weddings is about $40,000. (Just a guess based on episodes I've seen) There is almost nothing covered about the couples themselves, any challenges they've overcome, their goals, dreams, and most importantly, their love for each other. These things would only give the wedding genuine meaning and real value. But there are no scores for those aspects. How sad.
Sister Wives (2010)
A guilty pleasure
True, it bravely parades a felony act right before our very eyes and most people can't understand why anyone would live in such a way, but Sister Wives is definitely interesting enough to catch and maintain your attention.
I spend most of the episodes trying to determine if these wives are truly as happy and pleased with their lifestyle as they constantly insist they are. Voices breaking from emotion are frequent and usually when describing how "rewarding" this life is but one can't help but wonder if there isn't something deeper and far less amiable at play as well.
The wives are more expressive than I had expected them to be regarding territorial issues and feelings of jealousy and they do admit to their occasional presence, but what they seem to consider the "fringe benefits" of their lifestyle,(help with their children, housework and lets' face it,someone to talk to) feels more to me like what is keeping their stronger emotions in check.
One does feel a bit sorry for these women as it often feels like they are being cheated, but if their expressions of satisfaction are genuine, are they really being robbed of anything? It is that steady, back and forth dilemma that as far as I'm concerned makes this show irresistible---despite it's moral or legal questionably.
Mother Knows Best (1997)
One of the best true crime movies ever!
My favorite genre of movies is true crime and this one captures beautifully the reason I enjoy watching them so much. I have seen it many times and could still watch it over and over.
Joanna Kerns plays the role of an overbearing society mother to perfection. The character she plays, Celeste Cooper, has a sense of entitlement and feelings of superiority that leads her into believing she has the right to do anything she wants. Even while plotting the most deceptive and evil schemes, she holds herself with grace and dignity. It's an excellent example of how money and status can warp a person's perception of reality.
The other actors also give quality performances but Kerns is the reason you are likely to never forget this show. I recommend it to everyone, even if you're not a true crime story fanatic like me.
