The 11th Hour (2007)
Dated public health announcement about the climate
In 2023, the people who need to watch this film as a wake up call to help affect positive change, won't. I never saw this film until now. If I had in 2007, it would've been more prescient. However, even for 2007, it doesn't really present any revolutionary ideas and there's not much depth to the way that the ideas are presented in the film. In my mind, the warnings in this film are not harsh/urgent enough!
I didn't take anything away from this other than it's a dated public health announcement about the climate. With that said, the ideas presented are important and should not be ignored or forgotten by anyone in society. There might be other more recent films to do a better job of this, but this would be a good film to show children in 6th or 7th grade . Beyond that, I don't think it has much worth anymore.
The Bridge (2006)
A phenomenal concept to document with lazy filmmaking and very little to gain from watching it
As most people have noted, this is a fascinating documentation of a small group of people. It is a brief window into what goes on in the minds of some of those who jumped. Sorry to all those who have lost people to suicides.
For the amount of effort that was put into documenting these deaths, it was an extremely limited/narrow perspective of the actual situation at the bridge. It was disappointing that they didn't try harder to show more of the perspective on the bridge, and where the cameras were placed.
Some sort of historical and statistical info would be nice to support the narrative. An massive opportunity for further education was lost. Info about suicides, deaths, who travels there, who is from the region, pretty much anything to give someone sitting at home an idea about what happens there and how often. Demographics? Anything. And what about the bridge? When was it built? And has this always been happening or was it a recent phenomenon? Do the police just constantly patrol it for potential jumpers ?
I think this was the laziest effort put into a documentary that I've seen in a long time. The entire premise has massive potential and it was lost on a long dragged out look at just a few people without much info. The whole thing should've been about 30 minutes rather than full film length. I appreciate the documentation for what it is but anyone with cameras and the motivation could have made the same uncompelling uninformative film . It was an original idea but it failed to deliver much beyond what we already knew, people jump off the bridge...
Amsterdam (2022)
really disappointing
Amazing cast. Visually fun. Awful, convoluted script and execution.
This was a sad excuse to cast so many amazing people by a director/writer that can do and has done so much better. I really wanted to like it despite the bad reviews, but they're right, it sucks. This is exactly how I felt after watching Nightmare Alley, except that film was slightly better.
I do think the actors deserve some credit for making the film better with their talent, but they didn't get much to work with. I was surprised and appalled to see Taylor swift in it at the beginning because she doesn't deserve acting credit among so many other amazing actors but then she got hit by a car so it was fine.
My Octopus Teacher (2020)
New title: 'A narcissist and his octopus teacher'
This guy just wanted to make a movie about himself, not the octopus. Amazing octopus footage, but not so interesting person, he's just vain. Show more octopus footage and less Craig. Was really disappointed because I love octopi and wanted to learn more but I think I learned more about Craig than the life of an octopus. It's really sad this was nominated for an oscar, and nauseating that it won. The academy surely did nothing but inflate his ego and crush the spirits of other more deserving filmakers. I'm really glad this guy is not my father.
