Steeltown Murders (2023)
Very good but one flaw bugged me
I thought this series was very well done, especially with the flashbacks so well plugged into the present. It was a little drawn out, but worth the wait. Geraldine's father in the flashback looked pretty much the same age as Detective Paul Bethel. However the father in the present looked about 20 years older than Bethel. I am a stickler for details. I guess someone might argue that the loss of a daughter can cause a lot of aging, but I doubt it would be that drastic of a difference. Too bad the killer didn't get caught before he died. I cannot imagine the horror of what those three girls went through.
Outlast (2023)
Charlie Team wanted who?!!
I don't understand Charlie Team wanting Jill from Alpha. She was the one who instigated stealing three sleeping bags from another team. This theft could have resulted in two people dying.
But then once they got Justin from Alpha and found out thru Jill's note that Justin tore up Alpha's tarp/shelter before he left Jill and Amber (to join the Charlie Team), they decided to kick him out. Justin was just following Jill's lead from the beginning.
I very much disliked Jill, Justin and Amber for what they did together as a team. It was inhumane. How on earth was the Charlie Team willing to add Jill to their team and yet they kicked Justin off for basically doing what you KNOW she would have done if she were in Justin's shoes?!!
Jill was a thief and she definitely CHEATED in this game. She was the driver of Alpha. It makes no sense that she was acceptable while Justin wasn't.
This caused me to be disappointed in Charlie Team but I'm glad they won over Jill and Amber because they were EVIL!
Fake or not, I binged this show.
Child 44 (2015)
Read the book first!
That's what I decided and I'm so glad I did. There is just so much more to the story that you wouldn't want to miss. In fact, I think I would have been lost had I not read the book first.
The Lost Daughter (2021)
It has no turning point
Although the acting was good, I kept waiting for an answer that never came. Yes, motherhood is difficult and demanding but if that was the message in this movie, that's something we already know. By the end, I was just frustrated that I was so patient.
Little Fires Everywhere (2020)
Bad Enough to Stop watching
Elena is the same character as Madeline in Big Little Lies. The thing that turned me off the most is the idea that May Ling's child was so easily found because she was convienently given to Elena's friend, Linda. Another thing is that Mia was adamant that the birth mother should pursue custody when she herself was not thinking at all along those lines. To top it off, Mia whose struggled with money her entire life decides to sell her beloved art piece to pay $30,000 in attorney fees for a co-worker. I don't think so. I wasn't going to watch anymore after the 3rd episode. (There are 8.) But what the heck, I watched the 4th only to see another ridiculous scene at the end. I'm definitely done. 4 more episodes?! No way. I don't typically write reviews. I could probably count them on one hand, but this was just so blatantly bad, I had to say so.
Mother! (2017)
Ignore any good reviews, a waste of time
Like another reviewer said, I want my 2 hours back. I kept hoping for something that made sense, waiting and waiting, so tempted to just stop watching, but I was curious. It had to lead to something worthwhile I wrongly thought. This movie was one of the worst I've seen.
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
One the Actors Must Regret
::spoiler:: (I guess)
And one, regrettably I bumped into last night on HBO. The film starts out being about two violent criminals running for freedom to Mexico.
Once they get there, this whole movie is spoiled, because out of nowhere it's got vampires everywhere with gore and guts gushing galore. This is where I stopped watching the movie. What a waste of time!
I am amazed that ANY actor would choose to be in this movie. I am especially amazed that Harvey Keitel accepted the role. For Clooney, wanting to get away from ER, well, it was a DUMB decision to start here. How did he ever recover? I guess his good looks saved him.
I'll bet big bucks that if you asked each of these actors how they felt about having been in this movie, they would all be horribly embarrassed and regretful (except for possibly Tarrantino).
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
Started out good - got monotonous
I got into the movie at first. The mystery and its darkness was interesting, but after a while, all the new situations started getting monotonous. I ended up frustrated and disappointed. I got the movie's message that the choices we make can dramatically change our lives, but does it have to drummed into me over and over again? In this story though, even when you go back and do the right thing, things can still turn out very badly. ::::SPOILER::: This movie sold itself out and gave us a goody two shoes ending, instead of an interesting, better one. I agree with the previous reviewer as to where the movie should have ended.
The extremely loud noises during scene transitions in the beginning of the movie were unnecessary. The director should have used more creative ways to scare the audience. The video alone may have been enough, but that volume was downright annoying.
I thought the acting was very good, but that alone does not a good movie make. C- in my book.
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
Gary Oldman - Spectula as Dracula
Last night we saw Gary in the Fifth Element, and all I could think about was how extremely different these two roles are, and how fantastic Gary Oldman was in Dracula. He is not the best looking man in the world, but in Dracula, he portrays a very sexy man who is simply irresistible. Gary Oldman as Dracula made an indelible mark in my brain. His acting was absolutely stunning in this movie. See it for that reason alone.
In the Bedroom (2001)
Lobsters in the Bedroom?
In a prior comment, someone was dumbfounded as to why the movie was titled "In the Bedroom". This answer was provided at the very beginning, but by the time the movie was over, I completely forgot having seen or heard the explanation, and found myself asking the same question.
It's when they're out catching lobsters and Matt educates Natalie's son: There's an area in the trapper called a bedroom. One poor fella (lobster) lost his arm. That's what can happen when more than two lobsters are in the bedroom. "Two's company, three's a crowd." Matt then describes the pregnant female lobster. The older lady, the lobster with babies is very dangerous. She can take out two males -- no problem.
Yes, this movie was slow moving and as many have said downright boring at times. But isn't that what "real life" is like? The average person doesn't have these kinds of tragic things happening. Movies are watched because they are an escape from our own boring realities. The difference here is that this movie includes that aspect of our lives in between the rare, horrible things that happen to these people.
*********SPOILERS**********SPOILERS**********SPOILERS**************
One thing that was very clear was how Matt and his wife didn't communicate AT ALL about the death of their son until it just couldn't be contained any more. It was like: if they didn't talk about it, it didn't happen, or they wouldn't have to deal with their feelings about it. This was a couple that didn't communicate about anything bad. I'm familiar with families like that and it's very sad.
The thing that I found hard to believe in this movie was that Matt could actually pull off kidnapping and killing his son's murderer. I kept expecting the other guy to get the upper hand. Natalie's ex-husband was young, strong and obviously had a wild temper. In real life, I think Matt's attempt would have failed. Either Matt would get killed, or he'd get charged and put away for murder himself. And so there'd be another tragedy for his wife to handle. Either result is predictable, yes, but, more believable.
The movie and acting were very good, but I wouldn't consider this a "must see".

Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)
Should have won Best Movie!
Jessica Tandy received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress (and it was nominated for a Writing award), but Fried Green Tomatoes definitely should have received Best Picture for 1991. I will never get over the fact that "Silence of the Lambs" won while this fantastic movie wasn't even nominated! This movie is an absolute must-see. Be on the look out for a quote that I've used many a time since. (It probably comes from the book the movie is written from.) It is so humorously true. Imagine it spoken by a woman with a very thick, southern drawl:
"Is there anything worse than a man who's sick?"
The Ninth Gate (1999)
Disappointing Ending
This film was intriguing all the way through. I expected to SEE what the film was leading up to all along. Instead, to me, the movie just sort of came to a dead stop. All this effort to create a mystery, and then -- NOTHING. I've read the other reviews and maybe we missed something symbolically. I'd be interested in reading more reactions to THE ENDING.
