A few expected wins at the SAG Awards, but it was a night of plentiful surprises. Often an extremely overlooked awards show, it still has much more true meaning than the Golden Globes, which is delivered by 90-some journalists!? The SAGs are given to actors, by actors. Honoring actors in both television and film, the two hour award show flows very smoothly and very quickly. With not a lot of wasted time, no host, and no musical numbers, this year's award ceremony was almost completely tautly constructed. There are only about a dozen categories, but each category has some of the best and brightest stars. The 11th Annual SAGs were definitely an event to remember as they gave a clearer idea as to who might snag an Academy Award come Oscar Sunday.

Shakespeare In Love delivers a fabulous plot, and some fabulous acting. I am not a fan of romantic movies, but this movie appealed to me in many ways. Gwyneth Paltrow portrays a wealthy, young woman who is set to be married, but falls in love with William Shakespeare, played by Joseph Fiennes. Shakespeare, who is having writer's block, is inspired by the young woman and manages to write one of his greatest plays of all, Romeo and Juliet. This movie is most entertaining, and quite lovable. Paltrow received her Academy Award statuette for Best Actress while this movie received many other Oscars, including the coveted Best Picture. Judi Dench delivers well in her very small role as Queen Elizabeth, for which she received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. If you haven't seen this, see it just to say that you have seen it. You might fall in love with this movie.

I thought the plot of the movie was extremely brilliant, don't get me wrong there. Steven Spielberg is an excellent director, don't get me wrong there. Tom Cruise can be an excellent actor, don't get me wrong there as well. But all three of them together made the film seem lazy and silly, and Tom Cruise just doesn't cut it in a sci-fi/fantasy movie. It would be something like having Adam Sandler star in Lord of the Rings. It just doesn't really work... Better luck next time.
