After Life (2019)
Packs an emotional wallop
I read an interview with Ricky Gervais in the NY Times on Thursday, and after reading that I watched the first season's 6 episodes. Amazing series that brings tears, sadness, laughter, joy. Friday the second season came out on Netflix and I watched all 6 of those. The final episode packs an emotional wallop. This is a perfect series. After the end of the second series, I wonder if it will continue again in a year, or just end here? I could see either happening, but i hope Ricky Gervais decides to create another 6-show season. It's too good to end it here.
Hellmouth (2014)
An excellent vehicle for Stephen McHattie
I knew within the first five minutes of watching this move that it was something really unique. Not really a horror movie, which the name and poster suggest. First of all there is Stephen McHattie, who is a seriously underrated actor. Second, the visuals and filming of the movie are really quite unique. It wanders a bit as the movie progresses, but is well wroth watching. Fantastic.
Au-delà des murs (2016)
What a great mini-series
I ran across the ending of the first of the 3 parts in this mini-series on Shudder. It was intense and very creepy. Then I went back and watched all 3 episodes one after another.
The first 30 minutes or so really just set up the story - let you get to know Lisa, the main character, and her personality. This is important as the entire story plays out. I was quite moved at the ending; not what I expected, but quite amazing.
This is highly recommended. If it was available in the US on DVD or Blu-Ray I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but it's not so I think Shudder is the only way to see it. Shudder is available on iTunes and Amazon.
Altitude (2010)
Five interesting minutes stretched out to an interminable 90 minutes
What a horrendous waste of time. This could have been a half hour Twilight Zone show, but for some reason the writer and director had to drag it out for an hour and a half. Really there were only about five minutes of worthwhile movie time. On top of that all the characters are incredibly irritating and obnoxious. This is one of those movies where you can't wait for them to die. And then the ending is so obvious and moronic it drags the movie down even further. Don't waste your time. Get a colonoscopy instead - - it will be less painful and something good will come of it. Hopefully the writer of this dreck finds useful employment as a garbage collector instead of creating garbage like this. Terrible, just terrible.
