Man-choo (2010)
Cheking out your internal barometer
You will find inside you the answer to all the questions that might arise during the 115 min of beautiful "Korean cinema - now- ". You could confirm your internal GPS and uncover lost feelings and/or emotions that you were never sure about.A movie that offers an affirmation about your internal GPS,maybe gives away a technique to discover different information about your true self. You might find a subtle, lingering something that repeatedly remains unemployed inside you that keeps you ignorant about profound experiences. If things suggested in the movie make sense for your own self you will end up weeping or laughing - that would represent an affirmation that the statements do resonate with you.I wish that you step out of the movie theatre a truer version of yourself!!!!!!Enjoy.
Conventioneers (2005)
An Eye Opener for the politically naive
This unscripted movie filmed in the middle of protesters is leaving me surprised to say the least. The producer, operator and director had been arrested between 17-40 hours.
As a person not involved politically yet bummed by the "lack" of protests on the American political scene I had benefited from a believable lesson based on political backgrounds that actually happened in Summer of 2004 in the Big Apple(500 000 protesters).
So palpable and flexible in filming the protesting against Bush political stand, casualties and censorship. There are shots of the march of one thousand coffins (in which one of the actors took active part) and shots from a real soup kitcken/pantry played with collaboration of non actors.
So provocative and fresh, an eye opening experience. An introspection into media censorship that reminded me to search deeper for the raw news .We are also presented with a lesson on prejudice via two caracthers representing the liberal and conservative Texan points of view. With regard to romance we learn of two human beings who reconnect at different, conflicting levels ultimately. The movie is a gentle suggestion for citizens who choose to not vote and the openness of one's mind. When judgments are eliminated people can find common grounds no matter what the circumstances are.
El baño del Papa (2007)
A meaningful message
This is a movie about hope, friendship and the building rock of a society - the family. In the beginning I thought that religion would play a prominent role in the movie, but that was me rushing things up.
The people of Melo, a town in Uruguay, put their "thinking hats" once the visit of Pope John Paul II is anounced. These people envision a sea of visitors running through their town and prepare adequately, making sacrifices, only to be left with a broken dream and empty pockets..
In the beginning people make fun of their hazardous life, and in the end the same people defy the odds of life by turning on the other chick.
To higher spirits,salute !
The Kite Runner (2007)
Lift and Dive !
Watching The Kite Runner by Marc Foster made me wonder at what age it would be appropriate to introduce this movie to a kid.Towards end there are brutal sequences which may be skipped.
The message of friendship and endurance is rough nevertheless,a must for any age as we need guidance in reaching our highest values in life.
There are some comments on historic facts that may open wider perspective for the viewer : "The mullahs want to rule our soul, and the Communist tell us we don't have any" (see Soviet invasion and standing up for one's principles no matter in what the circumstances one is thrown)
Wise comments :
"Whatever it is you should deal with it before too long.. Time will only make it worse".
Tradition related ones : "Blood is good for trees"(sacrificed goat blood in this case)
One can marvel at Kabul city from above, get a glimpse into the traditional cooking, wedding and listen beautiful music, also enter the minds of local adolescents piking up on a Hazara boy.I am not going into much detail because this movie must be seen.
There is a scene taking place in Peshawar,Pakistan, circumstance in which it is mentioned that the kite flying was forbidden by Taliban ruling. How ironic. Upon returning to Kabul for a visit we observe "the beard patrol" passing by, ruins and no trees; then more that has to be seen.
The viewer is also enchanted by verses belonging to the very influential Persian poet and philosopher Rumi:
"If we come to sleep, we are His drowsy ones and if we come to wake, we are in His hands, If we come to weeping, we are in His clod full of raindrops, And if we come to laughing, we are His lightning in that moment. If we come to anger and battle, it is the reflection of His wrath. And if we come to peace and pardon, it is the reflection of His love.
Who are we in this complicated world?"
My hope is that this movie will guide you toward envisioning that good person who's intentions are running as high as a kite, and then become one.Better someone's else life as you will better yourself; status quo may hold you back.
The cast is amazing.
"LIFT AND DIVE" Peace be upon you,

Lakposhtha parvaz mikonand (2004)
Drama on the brink of war
Excellent description of the morale of children during the war. There is Satellite who represents hope through his buoyant spirit and action on one hand, and there is a young girl "Agria" who gives up hope due to the privations she endures along. I was fascinated to learn of this children life living without parents, and of dangers they had to go through in order to survive like picking mines! I was also impressed by this children-actors coverage of the story they are SO TALENTED! The way this director dispersed roles by not leaving out injured children, more so- giving them chief roles left me in admiration. "Turtles can fly" is a moving film about children forced to mature sooner than they should.
