A call for freedom !
Tout là-haut is a dramatic comedy directed by Serge Hazanavicius whih took place in France in 2017. This film, based on a true story, tells the life of Scott, a young snowboarding enthusiast who has only one desire: to snowboard on the Everest.
In this initiatory quest, Scott will meet Pierrick, a former mountain guide, who will take him to the top of his sport.
Concerning the acting, the duo Kev Adams/ Vincent Elbaz works well, their characters are both funny and moving!
The scenes shot in the mountains are beautiful and impressive, they transcribe the reality of the Free ride as well as its dangers for people with and without mountain experience.
For an audience of experienced athletes, this film may seem a bit far-fetched at times, seeing Scott move with such ease; it seems that nothing can resist him. Everything is a little too easy for him.
In conclusion, this work remains a nice movie to watch with the family.
Chasing Mavericks (2012)
A way to reconnect with yourself
Chasing Mavericks is a dramatic film directed by Curtis Hanson and Michael Apted which took place in the United States in 2012. The film, based on a true story, tells the life of Jay Moriarity who is passionate about surfing and who takes on the personal challenge of surfing one of the biggest and most dangerous waves in the world; Mavericks. In his quest to find his passion, Jay will meet Frosty Hesson, a local legend who lives two blocks away from his home. Frosty will try several times to dissuade young Jay from the surfing world, but to no avail! Jay and Frosty's friendship is unique and will change both of their lives.
The acting is quite accurate, the characters are credible in their roles as surfers.
Concerning the set and the images, the scenes shot at Mavericks are extremely beautiful and impressive, they retranscribe with accuracy the reality of surfing in this extremely hostile place! The music created by Chad Fischer helps us to anchor ourselves in this rather mystical scenery specific to big wave surfing.
The initiatory story remains quite classical, fortunately punctuated by beautiful surfing sequences that delight surf lovers. The morals also remain very classical (surpassing oneself, family above all, what doesn't kill makes you stronger). Moreover the movie takes up many clichés of Hollywood learning cinema that could have been avoided during the construction of the script.
However, the viewer quickly gets carried away and follows Jay and Frosty's exploits with interest. At some times the film makes you smile, when at others times it brings tears to your eyes! Time flies by and you realize that life has very little to live for when you practice an extreme sport like this one. This film is an ode to perseverance which gives the public the message that if you give yourself the means to reach your dreams, then nothing can stop you.
