The Life Before Her Eyes (2007)
Superb Drama!!!!!
The life before her eyes, as the title suggest is the depiction of ones life flashing through in a millisecond but the way it was projected in this film is so dramatic and thoughtful that one cant seem to forget about this movies even after watching it more than one time.
This is the story of friendship, parenting, relationships, everything what life is all about and all these elements are placed in this film so well and interconnected that the viewers are indulged in the characters.
"The strongest muscle in the body is the heart" physically but heart at the same time is the weakest muscle of all if seen emotionally and this film present this bitter reality of life, dramatically if not emotionally, to the viewers excellently.
Directed by Vadim Perelman (his second film) known for exceptionally superb "The house of Sand & Fog", though not very strong as the later, this shows the talent, perception and a vision this man has. From the cast the best performance comes from Evan Rachel Wood who plays the main role and believe me this girl has a lot of talent to become a superstar actor in the near future.
Back ground music was very typical with this kind of movies, but with the concept, the drama & the intrigue this movie has, you tend to forget about that.
Thats all and I would definitely recommend this movie to all looking for a serious, dramatic & emotional treat. A 7/10 for "The life before her eyes"
Deception (2008)
Deception is a deception for your time
Spoiler at the end of this review
Watched the movie last night and oh boy I was so damn angry about this. The movie stars Ewan McGregor, Hugh Jackman & Michelle Williams directed by the first timer Marcel Langenegger and the only watchable performance in my opinion comes from Jackman.
Second good thing can be the back ground score which ironically comes from Ramin Djawadi the man behind the music from Iron Man and I so didn't like his work in Iron Man this time his music can be considered impressive.
The story of the movie is very very typical. An accountant is introduced to a mysterious sex club known as The List by his lawyer friend. But in this new world, he soon becomes the prime suspect in a woman's disappearance and a multi-million dollar heist (From IMDb).
While Deception does look & sound cool but the plot is unconvincing and predictable. Most of the time I was remembering "Derailed" in the back of my head while watching deception and while "Derailed" had a lot of punch in terms of suspense, twists and shock, deception tend to make viewers getting proud of themselves by saying " Yeah. this is the scene or part of the plot which I was guessing" Its SO damn predictable.
Next part is a SPOILER: And last but not the least, I don't understand where in this world are men like Jonathan McQuarry who will leave two full bags of cash on the roads of Madrid while there is no one watching and practically he is entitled to have that cash in reality. Is this character so not flawed?? Overall I will give the movie a 4/10 rating.
Iron Man (2008)
Iron Man the action punch
Just watched the iron man yesterday on my home theater and apart form the fact that I already watched the movie in cinema and I was not so impressed the first time I really enjoyed watching it again on home theater. The reason behind this should be the quality of cinemas we found in Pakistan, the crowd which comes to these cinemas, the sound systems these cinema offer and much more and I am all free to say that movie watching is a much more pleasurable experience in home rather than in cinemas in Pakistan.
Synopsis of the movie:
The synopsis of Iron Man looks something like this: "Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is the CEO of Stark Industries which produces advance weapon systems for the U.S. military. Tony's father started the company after WWII, and after his death Tony inherited the company, worth billions. Tony lives the life as a hard drinking, rich playboy ladies man, but he is also a genius who has invented many high-tech items for the company. Tony flies to Afghanistan to demonstrate a new weapons test to the army. On his way back to his plane, his convoy is attacked by terrorists, and Tony is wounded by a Stark Industries missile. Tony is captured and held hostage in a cave with Raza (Faran Tahir), a doctor who saves his life. The terrorists force Tony and Raza to reproduce the new destructive Jericho missile Tony was demonstrating from parts of other weapons. Instead, Tony decides to build a suit of armor with Razas help. The suit gives Tony the strength and protection to be able to escape the terrorists. Back in America, Tony builds a better suit of armor which gives him superhuman strength with the ability to fly. With the help of his personal assistant Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Jim Rhodes (Terrence Howard), Tony vows to protect the world as Iron Man."
THE GOOD The most amazing thing about this movie is to have Rober Downy Jr playing the Iron Man. He fitted this character so well that I almost forgot about his past performance while watching the movie. Credit goes to the casting team but for the most part Robert's acting and the grip on the character goods and bads is what shines through all over. On the other hand the performances from the other actors were also good.
The visual effects are excellent. Everything looked so convincing and so real. We shouldn't be surprised by that
after all it's the same visual effects company who did the stuff on Transformers The Incredible Hulk. The wizards at ILM did such a good job you can never quite tell when you're looking at a costume and when you're looking at CGI.
The story, plot and the dialogues are so well formed that the lack of action in the movie doesn't put you off. It's a good STORY! it had such a good pace to it and the characters and backstory so well set up that you actually enjoy it.
THE BAD As mentioned before, the film could have more action in it. Yes the story made up for that, and it's not like the movie was suffering with a SERIOUS lack of action
but I still feel like the action sequences in the movie could get a little longer and more engaging. Its the feel that when it starts to action and actually begin to enjoy the action it end up.
The second bad thing I could find about this movie was the back ground music, so unconvincing and so straight.
OVERALL Iron man is a fun, exciting, interesting, entertaining comic book movie that even non-comic book movie fans will enjoy. It's funny, looks great and has some great performances. Yes it could have stood a couple of more action sequences and yes it seemed to lose its sense of pace for a little while, but these are minor complaints that didn't effect the overall enjoyment of the film for me. I will give Iron Man a 7.8/10.
