Damsel (2024)
Utterly abysmal
Truth be told I wasn't expecting much from this film. Thought at the most it might be at least entertaining.. Or considering what I've heard from Millie Bobby Brown, it could have been an angsty coming of age story. Something positive to honour feminists or those with more liberal sensibilities. Sadly not.
The storytelling was some what lacking, from the start it felt like a take on the Grimms fairytales.. However it proved to be more confused, fumbling and failing to hit the mark it was obviously trying too hard to achieve..
The characterisation and acting also fell short in this way, proving inconsistent. At first I thought it could be the writing but I was proven wrong but Browns performance. She gave what I believe to be her poorest role. And ended in a somewhat peculiar way. Feeling more like her telling the world 'I am now a women.' Leaving behind the childish image we have of her from Stranger Things.
Despite the odd musing, I stand by my comments and say don't waste your time.
Death Comes to Pemberley (2013)
Substantial addition to Pride and Prejudice!
I am DEFINITELY an advocate of period dramas. And like many others, I've seen 'Pride and Prejudice' a few times before. I love seeing stories progress and thanks to P.D James, we have the opportunity to see Lizzie and Darcy's journey continue. Albeit turbulently.. 'Death Comes to Pemberley' has been written with respect and keeps audiences on their toes. I think it would warm Austen's heart to know that her work has inspired others. Whilst keeping true to its original themes and characters. My only criticism would be the casting choices. I'm still not convinced by James Fleets performance.
He certainly isn't my first choice as Mr Bennett, but he was okay.. Maybe I've watched 'the Vicar of Dibley' too much?! Overall, I would highly recommend this adaptation. And it's definitely worth a rewatch.
Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears (2020)
Same old Phryne!
Miss Fisher needs no introduction. Underneath her, many beautiful hats is a mind that thinks like no other. She grabs hold of a case, like she does suitors and solves it with daring intuition. There isn't a Detective around that can top her, (sorry Jack!)
Credit where its due, this was a strong story with twists and intrigue. We where swept away to Jerusalem and into the heart of an ancient curse. Meeting new friends along the way and saying hello to old.
Miss Fisher didn't disappoint and from the very beginning I realised how much I'd missed her. My only complaint would be my longing for home, I wish that we could have spent more time in Australia. However, with the dashing Detective Robinson, Miss Fisher won't be homesick for long...
