Blackbeard (2006)
entertaining but unrealistic
I enjoyed the acting, the scenery and the overall effects and attempt at an enjoyable FICTION pirate movie. This was not a movie about the real Blackbeard, however - even though it supposedly IS about his encounter with Robert Maynard. There were some redeeming qualities, but two scenes seemed totally out of place - one being a rescue scene in town where shades of Errol Flynn appeared. The other was the ending. Though the movie was entertaining at home, the historical value leaves much to be desired as the location of the story during the ending is totally inaccurate. All historical accounts of the demise of the pirate and the ship discuss the location as off the coast of North Carolina - a place much celebrated as the last place of the infamous pirate - not in the Bahamas.
Annapolis (2006)
Don't waste your time
So I really don't have a spoiler because I couldn't finish watching the movie, but just to make sure I don't get in trouble... the movie isn't about what the jacket said. It's about a less-than-ordinary guy who has a grudge against a senior officer for no real reason. It's stupid, stupid, stupid. The bloke decides to eat snickers bars to get into his superior's weight class. The superior is a top notch boxer, and the new guy is an untrained Rocky-wannabe with no real talent (ah, but his senior officers are going to train him since they see something in him - yeah!). When he made the weight class, I said, "Welllllll... this beats all I've seen...." and stopped the movie. The writers were realllly reaching for straws on this one. The acting by the supporting characters was great, not by the main character, and the love connection wasn't believable at all. I expect those at Annapolis or any other military academy are using the DVDs for target practice.... "PULL!!!!"
