Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen Part One (2023)
felt like a fan fiction but not in a bad way
JL/Rwby crossover felt like a fan fiction and I mean that in the absolute best way possible as a fan of both franchises and of crossover/iseki fish out of water stories this seemed tailor made for my tastes, however it was a mixed bag
The Good
As always the fights completely pop off visual spectacle as we've come to expect from rwby
A decent mystery with the characters working together to figure things out
Wonder Woman felt the most in character of the JL and I liked her dynamic with Blake and Yang
Jaunes struggle with his memories anout Pyrrha and dynamic with Jessica was easily the highlight of the film they make great foils for each other being the ones who always feel like there worthless
The best depiction of Jessica Cruz outside the comics, this really felt like her, not the stupid activist character from DCSG( rant for another day) or the version from Justice league fatel five that was too brooding and sarcastic and got over her fear way to quickly for the narrative to work properly
Funny lampshading of each others worlds
The Bad
The character designs of the Justice League are not good they are too messy and would benefit from not changing as much from there original designs
Making the JL into teenages for forced conflict was stupid, having them be in a mentor relationship with the rwby characters while still not having as much of their powers or knowing about the rwby world would have been a fine enough power struggle conflict
I know they did it for brand recognition but the younger heroes in dc are right there and It would have been cool to see rwby with the Titans or Young Justice without some de-aging shenanigans
Batman as a teenager still feels super OOC, like distractedly so (though this may be because of the voice actor) I had to keep reminding myself it wasn't Dick Grayson or one of the robins who would have been a much better fit for this role
The villain was such a deep cut that even me as an avid dc fan didn't recognize them
This is definitely more of a rwby film than a dc film, you will be very lost if you haven't watched rwby, If this is a part 1 of a larger story I want rwby to do to the dc world.
Dragon Age: Absolution (2022)
Feels like sitting in on a friends DnD campaign in the middle of a story with no context
People that aren't familiar with the source material will be lost with all the lore and names they throw at you, some stuff you can pick up from context but not everything. Fans will be disappointed that its not focusing on the most beloved or interesting part of the Dragon Age lore or characters, there just isn't enough time to properly develop anything,
the animation and action looked nice ( minus the cgi dragon) and I found myself invested in the conflict with how quick the pacing had to be, but If I wanted to watch a DnD campaign type story about revenge with characters that are, queer, relatable and enjoyable that has both humor and emotional moments I would just watch The Legend of Vox Machina.
Cowboy Bebop (2021)
A fun raunchy comedy with some Retro futurism flavor
Even as someone who thinks the anime is the best piece of media Iv ever seen, I couldn't hate this show, much like Speed Racer it commits so much to being a live-action cartoon with how over-the-top it is, I loved it in a campy, kitsch, guilty pleasure way.
The set design, cinematography and music were top notch, and the stunts start out ok and end up awesome by the end
Jet was done the best out of the characters his noir inspired episode was the best of the series
yes there were some things that didn't work like removing Fayes tragic backstory and therefore character motivation, and focusing too much on Vicious and Julia when the reason there characters worked is because they were shrouded in mystery
I know it doesn't understand the meaning of the characters in the original and I don't care because ill always have the original, the mentality that a bad interpretation of something ruins the original thing really needs to die.
Sometimes I do want something deep and existentialist like the anime but other times I just want a fun raunchy comedy with some Retro futurism flavor.
Catwoman: Hunted (2022)
defiantly mostly style and little substance/ 6.5
It's a fun tribute to heist-style anime like lupin iii with its jazz soundtrack and fast-paced action.
It was a nice change of pace seeing both characters and an animation style that don't usually get spotlighted in Dc animation.
You won't find any of the depth Greg normally puts in his writing. If you go in knowing that it's still a perfectly ok film.
Batman and Harley Quinn (2017)
"Well that was a big bucket of nothing"
My only guess as to how this got made is that Bruce Timm was writing some kind of rule 34 fetish request for Harley in the "good girl" art he draws involving bondage, dubcon, and farting and he accidentally emailed it to the DC executives.
The movie's plot is a rip off of the BTAS episode "Harlequinade" with Batman reluctantly teaming up with Harley to stop a villain, she even sings a song in both, only that story was able to be told in 22 minutes while this, on the other hand, is filled with tasteless fanservice, meaningless boring filler, a tone that is all over the place.
Melissa Rauch gives one of the worst vocal performances Iv ever heard from a dc animated project ( I don't understand why they didn't get Tara Stong then again considering this scrip I wouldn't be surprised if she said no)
Paul Dini's absence is really felt in this movie, between this and the Killing Joke I think at this point we can agree that writing is not exactly Bruce Timm's strong suit.
RWBY (2012)
A nuanced and unique Faiytale
I always think about how something that intrigues me about RWBY with its storytelling.
No, it isn't perfect. Nothing ever is. It has flaws and things that could be improved.
But with the recent seasons I love the exploration and route of illustrating that literally everyone can make mistakes and the wrong choices can be made by anyone- hero or villain, protagonist or antagonist. No one person is completely perfect and can make a choice that will have immense consequences even if they were trying to achieve something good or what they saw as good.
Yes, even the main characters made mistakes. It's a complicated adventure they are in and things aren't going to go the way they hope. Even with the best intentions, things can still go wrong with what is chosen to do. Volume 8 especially highlighted this, the theme of "you won't be able to do everything. Focus on what you can and make a choice so that you do something at least; all you can do is try".
The protagonists want to do good and save people. Team RWBY and JNPR made mistakes, Qrow made mistakes, Robyn made mistakes, the Ace Ops made mistakes, Winter made mistakes, Ironwood made mistakes. It's not a situation of one person is right and one is wrong. It's supposed to be both have good and bad points, they're human and that's what happens. Things can end in tragedy or success.
Overall, I like this exploration in a show. It gives more nuance to the characters all around. And give a chance to really illustrate people with their flaws and mistakes alongside the good with them.
Justice League vs. the Fatal Five (2019)
This film can not stand up with dcau nostalgia alone
Personally I think The dcau already had a perfect ending and I don't consider anything released after Dwayne McDuffies death to be cannon
Fatel five was boring and unnecessary, the villains are not memorable or interesting and we've seen them before, Miss Martian is here and they never explain how that's possible since in this universe all the Martians are dead except J'onn, the only reason she's in the film is because the plot calls for a telepath
Jessica's story doesn't fit within the movie as it seems she goes from basket case to badass way to quickly, probably because in the comics she is forced to ware the ring of volthoom and that is where she develops he courage to accept the green lantern ring. I'm disappointed that we don't see things like her meeting john, getting the ring for the first time or training
starboy was the only character who I actually got into and I understand why they put him in the film even if he has a very minor roll in the comics
Its better that Batman and Harley Quinn, but the only two reasons its getting praise is because of nostalgia for the dcau and the fact that it mentions social issues- things that do not automatically ad to the films quality
It wasn't terrible but with the baffling character choices it also has no reason to exist
