Civil War (2024)
9/10
Gorgeously Brutal
14 April 2024
The technical aspects of civil war are amazing. For a $50 million dollar movie everything in this movie is impressive. The cinematography and music choices for civil war kept me hooked to the screen. What a beautiful movie. I didn't take the time to look up who the cinematographer is but man give this person a raise! Watching the images on screen unfold in civil war in an Imax theater was enchanting. It's a disturbing movie at times but it never feels gratuitous. Then we have the performances. Kirsten Dunst is excellent throughout but Cailee Spaney, I believe that's her name, is amazing. The rest of the cast is great as well! I can see some people may be expecting something different due to the marketing, and may leave the theater disappointed. But if you're familiar with Garlands previous work and know this isn't going to be a guns blazing kind of movie you should come away from civil war impressed. Awesome movie!!!

Boring
2 April 2024
Five Nights at Freddy's is a complete waste of time. There is not even one good scare in the entire movie. There is absolutely no tension. The film is so poorly directed to produce no tension and scares. The screenplay is awful. The way characters interact during conversation is so awkward and the things they say make no sense half the time. Josh Hutcherson sleep walks through his role. Elizabeth Lail looks sooooo bored throughout the movie, and her performance is like watching paint dry. Nothing in this movie works. The only time I was mildy entertained is a sequence when some robbers got what was coming to them. The worst part is this movie is getting a sequel because people like watching terrible movies now of days.

What a Trip! Brilliant-Intelligent Sci-fi!
1 March 2024
Dune 2 lives up to the hype. Each act in Dune 2 is engrossing, and the third act in particular was brilliant. The performances are perfect across the board. Dune 2 is one of those movies you see In a theater every few years that reaffirms your love for movies. Everything in Dune 2 fits right in place. It reminds me of watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy; being absolutely riveted throughout each entry and eagerly anticipating the next film. If they make a Dune Part 3 it could very well be The Return of The King of Sci-fi. It's in my humble opinion that Dune 2 ranks as one of the best cinematic experiences of my life.

Halo: Reach (2024)
Season 2, Episode 4
10/10
Somber, Brutal and Intense
22 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Well. This is what a lot of people have been waiting for, including myself. The fall of Reach. The action sequences continue to dazzle in season 2 and the "one-shot" like sequences through the rubble of Reach are brilliant. As our Spartans fight chaos on the streets, dead civilians and mass panic everywhere. Every action sequence is superbly choreographed, and I'm going to rewatch this episode over again just to revel in their glory. Admiral Keys speech was amazing and really hit me emotionally, and did his potentially presumed early death. Though I have a feeling he is somehow not dead and Kai saved him last second. It's a bold move if this is not the case and has me a bit divided if he is actually gone. Season 2 has been pretty solid overall, but man was this episode non-stop intensity. Minor quibbles aside like the few minutes spent on a clichéd shop keeper refusing to leave. Reach is a stunning episode of Halo from beginning to end.

Mayhem! (2023)
6/10
Your Patience Is Partially Rewarded
7 January 2024
Mayhem!, efficiently directed by Xavier Gens is violent, melancholy and features two extendedly-bloody fight sequences. Unfortunately, Mayhem makes the cardinal sin of making you wait almost an hour for any of the fight choreography promised in the trailer to appear. The Mayhem part of the movie really only applies to the last 35 minutes. Thankfully, the fight choreography is punchy, bloody, violent, and framed in a way that will make anyone who's watched The Raid movies smile. The question is, does the roughly 45-50 minutes it takes to get to the goods worth it? Sort of. The story is simple, clichéd and has quite the melancholic ending. The fighting makes up about 20 or so minutes of the movie and for a 100 minute movie titled Mayhem, it's not enough.

HOWEVER, if you can relax and make it through you will enjoy what Gens and his stunt team put together. The final hallway fight into a gory melee in an elevator is stunning. It's the in your face brutality promised by the movies title and I had to watch it multiple times to revel in its glory. If only the pacing was tightened up Mayhem could have been up there with the greats. Until then, it's a fine Sunday afternoon watch if you don't have anything else to do.

All Spectacle, Zero Substance
24 December 2023
And unfortunately none of the spectacle is great. Besides the opening action scene where "Kora" saves a villager, None of the action is exciting beyond that. Zach Snyder over saturates all the action in slo motion, and the choreography is boring.

The action isn't the only thing that let's the audience down. All the characters in Rebel Moon are one note and boring. Some of them have cool names, balisarius, general Titus, revenge samurai lady, prince blah blah blah, but we don't get to know any of them beyond artificial dialogue given to each character. Each "Rebel" has a few minutes of screen time, haphazardly edited together.

I read a critic review saying Zach Snyder made this movie to make a cool looking trailer, couldnt have said it better myself. Zach Snyder must be immune to criticism because he never learns from his mistakes. Sucker Punch, Rebel Moon, Batman vs Superman, Justice League, Army of the Dead all have the same issues. Poor stories, boring characters and empty spectacle. This is Rebel Moon in a nutshell. Another massive disappointment from Snyder and another big budget bore produced by Netflix.

Don't even get my started on the eye rolling ending. Learn from your mistakes Zach.

One of The Best Godzilla Films Ever
23 December 2023
Big fan of Godzilla. Watched all the movies as a kid and even sit through some of the muck Hollywood produces these days with ten to fifteen times this films budget. A good Godzilla movie balances the spectacle with the human story, and Godzilla Minus One does this perfectly. There are so many emotionally moving scenes in this film involving the human characters. All I wanted for them is to be happy and that says a lot regarding the performances from everyone involved, and the script itself. When Godzilla does appear it's legitimately scary. I love how the first half was a good mix of Jurassic Park/Jaws and the second half double downed on the character drama while not forgetting to thrill you with heart racing spectacle. Truly a monumental achievement this was only produced for $15 million and a testament to all of the talent involved in the making of Godzilla Minus One. Easily one of the best movies I have seen all year.

Heart of Stone (I) (2023)
3/10
Below the Standard
13 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
When I think of great action movies. I think of stunt filled adventures such as The Raid 1 and 2, John Wick, Extraction 1 and 2. When I think of summer popcorn flicks I think of Mission Impossible, Top Gun, and Angelina Jolies Salt which I will come back to in a few sentences. Heart of Stone wants to be a fun-summer blockbuster with a beautiful star as the lead, giving cans undemanding entertainment for 90 minutes or so. Unfortunately, beyond the eye candy of Gal Gadot, nothing works in Heart of Stone. The characters are boring, the action is poorly staged and not exciting. The plot is an overly serious mess. The rag tag group of MI6 agents that Stone is teamed up with are so lifeless and uninspired that it makes their inevitablee demise underwhelming. One MI6 agent has an orange cat, another wants to take Stone out to dinner and the other is kind of just there. Let's not forget about Jack, the mastermind who controls the heart through corny hand movements that gives me PTSD from Chris Pratt waving at raptors.

The action is purposely lighted to silhouette Gal Gadots stunt double, and everything in general lacks impact. I will admit some of the cars flying through the air was fun for a brief moment. Speaking of Gal Gadot, she isn't committed enough as an action star. She has the action star face bur she doesn't have the commitment. We've been spoiled with stars like Chris Hemsworth, Tom Cruise, hell Charlize Therone in Mad Max and Atomic Blonde. Charlize Theron in particular learned the stunts and got her hands dirty. Gal Gadot is contempt with earning a paycheck, giving audiences terrible lighting and shaky cam, and get paid $20 million to looks pretty, stare ominously and smile once awhile. She's not committed enough to her role and the rest of the cast phone in their performances as well.

The plot is nothing to brag home about. I'm All good for a simple summer blockbuster action movie in the same way as Salt was with Angolina Jolie several summers ago. The plot of Heart of Stone is incredibly boring, and has zero tension throughout. Anyways, avoid this at all costs. Netflix had A. I. produce this movie and it shoes. What a waste of time. Rewatch extraction 2 instead.

Invincible: Atom Eve (2023 TV Movie)
6/10
Punchy Action Highlights a Conflicting-Depressing Tone
26 July 2023
The action sequences in Atom Eve are fantastic, particularly the final battle against the mutants. Watching Eve's younger-inquisitive personality blossom is a joy when she was learning how to use her powers. However, the story is clichéd and I didn't feel myself connecting emotionally to anyone other than feeling bad for Eve's predicament. The special episode reminds viewers over and over how miserable it must be for Eve in Zach Snyder like music video sequences. The surrogate father relationship didn't connect emotionally, and neither did any of the other moments intended to pull at the heartstrings. All of this squeezed into a 50 minute run time makes Atom Eve an amalgamation of overly depressing tones that doesn't work as well as it thinks it does. Atom Eve has moments of fun, shrouded in an unnecessarily depressing origin story that is at odd with Eve's bright personality. Overall, a decent bite sized meal until season 2 hit this November.

Extraction II (2023)
8/10
Fantastic Action Sequences
17 June 2023
Extraction 2 does the one man army action genre proud. The action sequences in Extraction 2 are fantastic to behold. Sam Hargrave definitely plays his best card first with the first extended extraction sequence. The choreography, camera work, smooth edits continue to ramp up throughout the duration of the whole sequence. The first "long-take" action sequence is the best action scene I have seen for the last few years. In my opinion it was better than anything I saw in John Wick 4. Where in John Wick, extended sequences of wick dispatching goons felt repetitive and a bit boring. In Extraction 2 the opposite happens with the action sequences. In each action sequence the suspense continues to build and doesn't let up until the bullets stop flying. The shootout at the safe house location in the city is a prime example of this. I could talk about the action forever in Extraction 2. The action is weighty, bloody, choregraphed well and will satisfy any action movie fan.

Where things fall apart is any time characters need to have meaningful conversations with one another. The dialogue is pretty bad across the board, and Sandro has to be one of the worst characters in a movie this year. I didn't care for Rake's internal conflict, nor did I care about anyone in the movie other than Golshifteh Farahani's character. In the end though Extraction does what it needs to do by delivering two of the best action sequences I have seen in some time. The final confrontation is a bit of a let down, but everything before that is gold. I still give Extraction 2 an 8/10 because it's not like anyone is watching it for the plot.

Easily One of the Best Episodes of Barry
1 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, that was amazing. There is a lot to unpack without getting into spoilers. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole episode.

That ending! What an interesting creative choice on where to take Barry. It's a big risk and I think it will be a positive one. The performances were all amazing this episode from the whole cast. Epecially from Noho Hank. Poor Christobal, Genes son... There is a lot to take in rjght now. I love the lingering suspense and the paranoia throughout the episode as we never knew where barry may show up. Bill Hader said it's going to be impossible to guess the ending of Barry. With what happened in tonight's episode please count me in on the ride.

Another Great Evil Dead Movie
24 April 2023
Is Evil Dead Rise better than the classics? No. Is it a great addition to the evil dead franchise just as Fede Alvarez's 2013 version? Absolutely. Evil Dead Rise is a ton of fun and continuously ratchets up the gore and tension throughout it's 90 minute duration. The performance from Alyssa Sutherland as the main Deadite is worth the price of admission alone. The rest of the cast do an admirable job with what they're offered through a decent script. There are fun references to the older movies and buckets of blood. My friends and I had a ton of fun watching Evil Dead Rise in the theatres last night and I recommend it to any fan of the franchise. It's not reinventing the wheel but it's a great horror movie in it's own right.

Just Fine
10 April 2023
The animation in the Super Mario Bros. Movie is top notch, as it is with other Illumination titles. It can be fun at times to see nods to games, and see your favorite characters on screen. The movie is cute, charming and will greatly appeal to younger audiences. I had a good time watching the movie overall, but most of the time I was kind of bored. Jack Black stands out in a stacked cast, but otherwise most of the vocal performances are flat. Especially Anya Taylor Joy's and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Princess Peach. While I don't agree with all the harsh criticisms pointed at this movie. I do agree with the sentiment that this is not much of a movie and rather a collection of sequences reference Mario Games. The Super Mario Brothers movies is fine for what it is, but lets not pretend this is a "good" movie. This is fan service, and completely unambitious fan service at that.

Mayhem Ensues
16 February 2023
Project Wolf Hunting is brutally-violent with tremendous amounts of blood spewing all over the ship the movie takes place on. I was initially caught off guard by the brutal man-on-man violence that took place in the first half of the movie. The camera does not cut away as faces are bludgeoned with hammers, throats are slit, bullets fly and blood is spilled all over the deck. Once the second half rolls out a predictable "twist", Project Wolf Hunting continues to ramp up the brutally-bloody violence, and nobody in the cast is safe from the rampage that ensues. The action is fairly entertaining for the two-hour runtime and there are rarely any lulls in the bloodshed. For me, I loved how over the top the violence was as the tone can go from brutal to satisfying, humorous and then back to being brutal again. You will get some entertainment out of Project Wolf Hunting depending on your tolerance of violence with little substance.

What prevents Project Wolf Hunting from being a classic is everything but the action. There are no characters to latch onto, the writing is amateur and the story only hints at something great. Also, some of the action sequences could have been choreographed and filmed better to give the film a bit more energy. As other viewers have complained about, most of the cast are lambs for the slaughter. Characters often make silly decisions.

Regardless, I was entertained throughout Project Wolf Hunting, and I would recommend this movie to anyone that doesn't mind a simple-action horror movie with a tremendous dosing of bloody violence.

Vikings: Valhalla (2022– )
4/10
Season 1 is Fun, Season 2 is as Dull as Leigh's Acting
18 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Season 1 of Valhalla came out at the right time and I was reasonably entertained throughout. Seven episodes into season 2 and I am confused on what on earth happened. Everything feels rushed season 2, from the writing, certain set designs, character ARCS(if you want to call them that). Leigh in season 2 laments his lover for the first few episodes and I really didn't care because Liz was not really that big of a character in the first season. So we have to suffer mopey Leigh for a few episodes. Predictably he then meets another woman he is attracted to and they fall in love. Leigh is able to learn everything she teaches him off screen and it's all incredibly boring as it sounds. It doesn't help that the actor who plays Leigh is incapable of showing any sort of acting range. Every emotion has the same look and he looks bored throughout every scene. These lame character arcs effect everyone besides Frida, but even her story feels rushed. Olaf, the queen, everyone in this doesn't seem to really learn anything of substance. All the relationships are surface level. The potential bromance between Leif and Harald is laughable. The dialogue throughout season 2 never makes any sense. The boat ARC throws a bunch of characters on screen that I never care about. None of their fates matter. Friday and Olaf's performances are the best in the show but Olaf hasn't learned a thing since season one. Canute comes back only to not listen to a single thing his queen has to say. Everything is so oddly paced and doesn't flow at all. Not to mention there hasn't been on action sequence that has stood out to me. No battles, no fight scenes, nothing. Where is the promised bloody action? There are glimpses of it with leigh whining in the first episode and going on a rampage but that is about it.

Season 2 really is all over the place in terms of quality, and pales in comparison to similar shows like The Last Kingdom. Vikings Valhalla started as something entertaining and in a matter of a year turned into utter rubbish.

The Last of Us (2023– )

Excellent Pilot Episode
16 January 2023
Expertly directed by Craig Mazin, TLOU's pilot episode throws a lot at the uninitiated. As a fan, I felt right a home. The pronounced tension in the first 30 minutes. Sirens blaring, emergency vehicles passing by more and more, odd stories on a radio and a old wheelchair bound woman convulsing in the background. Tension mounts until hearts are broken due to excellent performances. As a fan of the games none of what is presented in the opening comes as a surprise, yet it is so expertly crafted that I still managed to cry knowing exactly what was going to happen.

Years go by and the story barely slows down as the world building keeps me glued to the screen. The budget is really on display in the Last of Us with handcrafted sets that ooze authenticity. Without dragging this review out much longer. I think fans of the video game or people who have never played TLOU will enjoy the pilot. HBO has delivered a great first impression handling one of my favorite video game properties.

M3GAN (2022)
6/10
Fun Horror-Comedy for Younger Audiences
9 January 2023
Self-titled horror afficionado here. When I first saw the trailer for M3gan in theatres I groaned every moment. Seeing it with friends last night however proved to be a different experience. All of us were laughing through a majority of the movie, and came out of the theatre feeling like we didn't waste our money. This may be due to my expectations being firmly in check. My friends and I knew what we were getting into when we decided to buy tickets. My biggest gripe with M3gan is is how it balances the horror and comedy. Being that I'm 34 years old and have seen some of the darkest-goriest-scariest horror movies of the last twenty or so years. I did not find M3gan to be remotely scary, not even in the slightest sense. Director Gerard Johnston could have done a better job balancing the scares with writer Akela Cooper's great sense of humor. Though, I do believe the target audience in their lower teens will probably fall for M3gan's predictable jump scares. My other issue is the neutered rating. It's not the end of the world, but the few kills in M3gan would have been more satisfying if they were allotted the impact an R rating could provide.

If you're in the right mindset and age group M3gan will be a blast. For me, it was entertaining but needed more bite and scares.

Aged like fine wine.
23 December 2022
Puss and Boots the last wish is a fantastic sequel and inarguably better than the charming first outing. The animation is brilliant, characters are charming, pacing is tight, very funny and the action is excellent. Not to mention there is a ton of heart. If I were to nitpick I think one of the antagonists trumps the other. One is played for more comedic purposes while the other is an Intimidating physical presence for boots to contend with. The Last Wish has something for everyone and it's probably one of the better animated movies I've seen in sometime. I really don't want to get into the story to avoid spoilers because the movie was a lot of fun, and it's best to go into it fresh. If anyone is considering taking their family to see the Last Wish like I did then The Last Wish is an easy recommendation. 100% worth the money. Two thumbs up for team friendship.

Medieval (2022)
2/10
Should Have Listened...
5 December 2022
...to the other reviews on IMDB before I decided to rent this last night. Medieval is a boring, trite and convoluted experience. The plot is all over the place and it's nearly hard to follow why things are happening. None of the characters you meet you will attach to on any emotional level. The writing is the main culprit, surprisingly though, the performances leave a lot to be desired as well. Ben Foster swings in for a quick paycheck with a performance that requires him to have one expression, Michael Caine looks like a lost puppy and everyone else seems as confused as I was during Medieval's runtime.

All I wanted was some decent Medieval action to overcome these faults and Medieval is lackluster in that regard as well. Action sequences are shaky, quickly cut, without emotion and looks like a bunch of people larping. Quick shots will show brief moments of brutality or dismemberment but it adds nothing because there is no investment to what is happening on screen for two hours.

If you were like me, bored and hoping to at least get some decent medieval action over the course of two hours you will be disappointed. Medieval offers nothing you haven't seen before and it does everything practically worse than other movies that take place during this time period.

Avoid.

Violent Night (2022)

A Violent Night Indeed
4 December 2022
Violent night is a lot of fun when it wants to be. David Harbour is having a great time playing Santa Clause. The problem is David is not in every scene, and the filler family drama causes the film to lose steam throughout the movie. However, my expectations in going to see Violent Night was to watch Santa Clause kick the crap out of some bad guys. In this department I was not disappointed, especially considering the directors previous filmography. Wirkola stages the fight sequences wonderfully with a standout being Santa using his trusty sledge hammer to take out some goons In a cabin. Everything is easy to follow and the choreography is tight. The violence is suitably bloody, and during multiple occasions the audience in my theater gasped and laughed with how over the top some of the violence is. It's not extremely gory, despite the awesome fatality at the end, but bloody none the less. Long story short action fans will be satisfied with what's on offer in Violent Night.

There is some heart in Violent night, and i always enjoy a movie reminding the audience to never let go of our Christmas spirit. It's just the overall story, humor, and side characters feel feel like a detriment that slows the movie down when it should be picking up faster.

I recommend Violent Night to anyone who doesn't mind some bloody violence paired with holiday cheer.

Wednesday (2022– )

Jenny Ortega Carrys Wednesday
25 November 2022
Without Jenny Ortegas performance as Wednesday, there would be little to recommend other then a semi interesting central mystery. The rest of the show is insufferable characters like Wednesdays roommate, Xavier, and Tyler. Watching Tyler act makes my eyes and ears bleed.

When the central mystery is not the main focus, we have to suffer through the typical YA teen agnst drama. The target audience for this show will soak it up. If you ever thought Riverdale was a good show you will be right at home here. Hence the 8.5 on imdb.

Wednesday might as well be another CW show, rotten tomatoes said it the best. If CW type drama, writing, characters is your thing you will love Wendesday. To each their own. I prefer a little bit more substance in my television shows.

A depressing, sobering reminder of the futility of war.
28 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
All Quite on the Western Front is depressing, tense, moving and a frustrating reminder of how useless war is. The cinematography, performances, battle sequences sound design are all top notch. I do feel as if the movie became a little too scattered before the big battle halfway through the movie, and could have done a better job developing characters. It's a minor complaint but you will feel the runtime of the movie during certain points.

One scene that will stay with me for a long time was the sequence in the crater. I was a complete and utter mess during that whole sequence. Seeing Paul gain his humanity back for the fallen soldier absolutely broke me.

All Quite on the Western front may not saying anything new about war, but it's a relevant-sobering reminder of the futility of war. One that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Mindless Entertainment for MK Fans
19 October 2022
After watching the previous two Mortal Kombat movies I was sure to keep my expectations in check. Scorpions revenge was entertaining but focused too much on other characters besides Scorpion. Legends had some good moments and fell off the rails in a ridiculous final ten minutes. Snow Blind is thankfully better than legends but still not as "good" as Scorpions Revenge. Snow Blind takes place in a wasteland after earth realm was destroyed by the apocalypse which is briefly explained during the 3rd act. Without spoiling much old "Bruce Wayne" mentors Kenshi into realizing his potential after his ego gets his butt handed to him. The relationship between Kenshi and Batman is the best part of the movie, though it could have been better developed. Kano, while typically cheeky, is not that intimidating or interesting as the main villain. Most people are here for the fights and there are plenty. However none of the fights standout. It's a bunch of blood and gore that is satisying at times, but none of the fights get your heart rate up. The animation and fights seem as basic as Snow Blinds story and that is really a shame. The gore does deliver a few gruesome fatalities that are entertaining of course, but I really think the next movie needs to amp up the stakes and intensity in this department. Snow Blinds brisk pace is nice and the ending leaves a bit to be desired. If you're a mortal kombat fan like myself you'll mindlessly enjoy yourself for the 80 minutes Snow Blind runs. I would recommend a rental if you're interested.

Terrifier 2 (2022)
7/10
Brilliant Gore and Obnoxiously Long
7 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Terrifier 2 is insanely gory. The kills in Terrifier 2 are absolutely nuts. The pain Art inflicts on his many victims competes with some of the most grotesque fatalities in Mortal Kombat and then some. The makeup effects are absolutely top-notch. If the kills and makeup are what you're looking for you will absolutely not be disappointed in that regard.

Art the clown is awesome as well. The way David Howard Thornton switches between darkly humorous to murderous rage without saying a word solidifies him as one of the top slasher villain's. I loved Thornton's performance in Terrifier 2.

The old-school aesthetic/cinematography really gives the Terrifier 2 an awesome Grindhouse feel to the movie.

Terrifier 2 is INCREDIBLY long for a slasher movie and will probably be the most common complaint people have after watching it. Many scenes could have either been trimmed down or completely cut altogether, Especially in the first act. The pacing is horrendous and the bloated length comes off as pretentious. Also, the mom in Terrifier 2 drove me nuts every scene she was in. Thankfully the performances are better this time around, some more campier than others but an improvement none the less. Lauren LaVera kicked butt as the final girl.

Be sure to stay after the credits as well. A few audiences members prematurely left once the credits started to roll and missed out on a comically grotesque sequence.

Smile (V) (2022)

A ton of fun
3 October 2022
Smile was awesome. It's not anything ground breaking, but if you want to experience a slick-scarefest you can't go wrong with Smile. I agree there are a lot of jump scares, and I understand if that is not your thing. The jump scares are well placed, and part of the fun is guessing when the scares will come. At least for me, and when the scares do come some were predictable, but many other scenes were pretty unsettling, unpredictable, suspenseful and quite scary. Sosie Bacon does a tremendous job carrying the movie on her shoulders. Bacon displaying convincing emotions to the chaos she is enduring. The ending was awesome in my opinion as well. Had so much fun watching this movie and I recommend it to any horror fan. Unless you completely despise jumpscares. Then stay away.
