Ultraviolet (1998)
Little seen gem
This is a great series, unfortunately too niche at the time that not enough watched so no series 2. Cannot believe the concept has not been taken up for a modern twist!
That Day We Sang (2014)
A wonderful little film by Victoria Wood
What a wonderful little film I hope that this is played every Christmas on television. It is so heart-warming and spirit lifting. What can you say about Victoria Wood, a true national treasure and so sad that there will be no more new material. So we all should rejoice in the work she left us. Some say this is not a true musical, well it's not, it is a piece in Victoria's own inimitable style. It is simplistic, funny and very enjoyable, one which as you watch it, you know it's a Victoria Wood masterpiece. For anyone who watches on DVD I recommend the documentary presented by Victoria which fills in the background to the film. A film to honour those who made the recording and to highlight middle age second chance love. Thank you Victoria, may you rest in peace.
The Water Diviner (2014)
Good film - The Railway Man is better?
First of all the film is beautiful, full marks for cinematography. For me this is Russell Crowe's directorial debut and it shows. the film is good, but I didn't find myself empathising with his character Joshua Connor and even less with the family. Maybe Mr Crowe is just trying too hard for a big blockbuster, but as they say from small acorns and I fully expect that with his first film under the belt he will become much more adventurous. It isn't a bad start, just not great. I found myself more drawn to the Colin Firth character in The Railway Man. I look forward to his next film, Russell Crowe brings a great presence to the screen as an actor and ultimately will, no doubt do the same as a director.
