Memory (2022)
Would have worked as a comedy
I really can't believe that somebody thought it would be a good idea to cast an elderly gentleman as an elderly gentleman losing his marbles.
If it was a comedy, It would have to have worked but as a "serious "movie It is actually a bit of a joke.
The scene where the firing pin has been left out, forgotten about, it's truly comedic and quite genius, but this is supposed to be an action thriller.
I remember when the movie Taken was hot, and Liam Neeson was being interviewed, left right and centre, and at that time he said "I wanted to do a movie like this, before I was too old "
Well, it has been about 15 years since the movie taken, And all Neeson has done since then his action movies and not one of them has come close to the one that launched them.
Ridley (2022)
Cliche central
Firstly, if you can't work out the ending, you inviolate lack imagination!
The usual selection of characters... the single mum, the same-sex couple, the idiotic underling, the retired detective with a haunted past and a specific musical preference..
It would be nice if we could occasionally see a cast more representative of actual reality rather that TV-land 'reality' .
And yet, Dunbar makes it worthwhile. He plays his usual character which is, after all, the only reason anyone tuned in!
Despite my review, of course I will watch the rest of it!!
Oh, and why doesn't anybody ever question how a retired detective lives in a lakeside gaff, part owns a jazz bar ....
Six (2017)
Cancelled after Season 2, how bizarre
One of the better offerings of its genre, how this was cancelled is beyond me.
Not as realistic as Homeland, but less cheesy than (the excellent) The Unit, this had me bingeing .
The Gray Man (2022)
Grown ups ...Don't bother
Blimey, what a poor film for an adult to watch!
Utterly silly, ridiculous 'stunts' , fights and gunplay.
This is no Bourne/Bond, more like Batman.
Far too long too.
The Fear Index (2022)
Nice starter, send back the main course
I started with high hopes, it's made all the right noises but part way in to Ep3 it jumped the shark... all the sharks.
Unlike some I persevered. They had the right idea.
What a pile.
The Teacher (2022)
Mind-numbingly unlikely
Who the hell was responsible for this ridiculous storyline which sees a person pleading guilty to a life-changing, career ending crime... without challenging it, without investigating it in any way.
Insultingly bad .
The Curse (2022)
Far better than it had any right to be!
I had no real expectations of enjoying this... but ended up watching all 6 one evening.
Some very funny writing, and some likeable characters. Only the ending let it down.
Landscapers (2021)
Film student level . Spoilers.
This was a self-indulgent exercise by the director.
I have never seen such utter tripe on mainstream television, which is a shame because the story and the actors were worth much more than the execution.
Flitting from scene to scene and showing the characters walking from one side to another... it's completely ridiculous!
American Rust: Denmark (2021)
Could have been so much better
Such a shame . Started in a compelling way, albeit a very depressing smalltown.
End with too many open ends yet doesn't seem to warrant a season 2.
Comparisons between this and Mare of Eastown aren't fair on Mare.
No Time to Die (2021)
Superb new female character... one of them.
Seriously, what was the point of the new 007, other than to stir up some sex and race baiting?
Added nothing, and before anyone gets upset I think Moneypenny has been well played, the character has been developed and she's one of the best things to happen to the franchise... but Nomi was unconvincing in action scenes, stilted and immature . The character, not the actor.
Paloma? Why so little screen time? Superb character, quirky, fun and athletic.
As a Bond movie, this is hard to love. As a stand-alone film, fine.
Hollington Drive (2021)
3 stars... I was generous
This is utterly awful. Should have been better, I expected more from the cast but you can only play the role that's written.
4 hours closer to death for this!
Annika (2021)
Not clever, Quirky
I scored it 8/10 for its bravery in taking a different run at a well-worn concept.
Easy watching, suspend your cynicism and ignore the unlikely efficiency of the police procedures... not every show has to be a challenge.
Oh, and if you don't like this but you DO like Line of Duty, here's a tip: they are both equally far removed from reality!
Just so you know.
Danny Boy (2021)
Save your 90mins
Save your 90 minutes, I really wish I had. This could've been such a great film or better still miniseries, but as it is it's poorly edited jumps all over the place and is in substantial in the extreme. Just as you feel it's getting going, it's over. To any of the real people involved, I think it's awful that this is supposed to represent what you endured. You deserved better from the system AND the makers of this film.
Your Honor: Part Ten (2021)
Ten hours lost
I feel like I lost 10 hours of my life watching this, it could've been something, well it was something... Something rubbish.
Far too many ridiculous coincidences, far too many out of character behaviours, I cannot believe this was signed off
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
Hard slog
I don't have trouble following a story but this was a hard slog, too up itself for me to enjoy without having to question whether we had flipped back or forward in time.
