Entrevías (2021)
I'd watch another season, probably
I don't think I've ever watched a show with fewer likable characters. Sure, we all make stupid mistakes sometimes - nuanced, layered characters are great - but, apart from a couple of exceptions, from a couple of people in specific matters, everyone in this show are consistently stupid in their decisionmaking. It's to the point where that's the element that makes this show predictable; list the alternative reaction to a situation from worst to best, and you've got the character in question's plans crom A through Z.
It's bearable, by all means, but the creators' main goal seems to be to depict people with different backgrounds and prejudices against each others coming together and understanding that behind prejudices and minor flaws, they're all good people, excusably and temporarily pushed to a bad place (drug addiction, prostitution, killing people, racism, child neglect) by their surroundings. With character development for most of the characters being one step forwards followed by no less than one step backwards. Then, in the end, they all come to accept each others' unforgivable stupidity. I'm left with the impression that people can't change, which feels like an odd message to be sending. This is soap opera more so than social commentary.
Dialogues are mediocre, and a couple of the acting performances are perhaps questionable (notably we get gangsters sprinkled with a little too much theatre kid and a few interesting casting choices). The visuals largely make up for it, though.
The Contractor (2022)
There's just nothing to complain about
I was entertained. I was slightly touched. I was surprised on a few occasions. I didn't notice any logical fallacies. The bad guy shooting accuracy was way off at one point, as it often is, but given the rate of it that's not something to complain about either.
My knowledge about the american military contractor industry is quite limited but I'm sure this film is unnuanced in its depiction. Then again I didn't expect a documentary, and you shouldn't either. Why would you?
The second most common complaint follows after a comparison to Jason Bourne. Sure, in a comparison on Jason Bourne's terms The Contractor loses. But once again, why?
It doesn't set out to be a documentary, nor super intelligent. It's a popcorn film with some substance beyond the action, which at no point had me feeling bored or depressed. I had a couple of laughs, a couple of tears (not actually because my masculinity is sublime) and am left feeling satisified.
And that's all I hoped for, really. I recommend.
Homeland: Tower of David (2013)
worst episode in the show
Watching this show for the third time. Took me as many days to watch this episode as it took to watch season one and two combined. I'm through it now at last, but it's like climbing. The excitement you feel upon success is by far outweighted by earlier pain and suffering.
Hawkeye (2021)
I'm sad
I really want to like this, I do, but there's nothing to like about it.
The action scenes are a joke. There's no respect for basic laws of physics - Katie's kicks and punches come with incredible force from the most unlikely angles. 23 years old two times archery state champion Katie's close combat skills are absurdly on the same level as Hawkeye and black widow Yelena.
There is no minimal character development, only in Maya's case really.
There's far too little depth to the emotional and psychological wellbeing of the characters. Hawkeye is mostly just sad that Black Widow just died. Yelena is just angry that her sister just died, projecting the blame onto Hakweye. Hawkeye carries some physical and psychological trauma after the Infinity saga, with hearing aids and some flashbacks related to the death of Black Widow. But they don't manage to explore this beyond in a few awkward conversations. Even in spite of the focus given to Ronin. Katie has naturally processed the loss of her dad but she too is far too shallow considering her baggage.
Renner performs well in light of a poor script. Pugh and Steinfield were working a completely lost cause from the beginning with a plain useless script. I'm not sure what the idea behind recasting of Duncan as Fisk was because I'm having a hard time fitting the the Netflix Originals Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Daredevil into this same universe. I guess you're not supposed to give this series that much thought though. I'll stop writing now because this is making me sad but this series was an unparallelled disappointment. If you want to watch a series that makes sense you'd be better off with Riverdale, and that says quite a bit.
Baywatch (2017)
