Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (2002)
Chopras conveyor belt keeps a runnin
The film is just as you expect - No great shakes but an entertaining 2 and a half hours. Exploring the well worn path of friendship vs love, the film takes us through a love triangle between Hritik, Rani and Kareena. With shades of Cyrano De Begerac and Saajan, the film takes us to its predictable conclusion using a flabbergasting chain of events. Uday Chopra also enters the fray - accompanied by laughter in the audience on his surprise appearance.
Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001)
Said to be the greatest Indian film since Sholay - and is
Lagaan, a film which had to be as brilliant as it was in order to meet the public expectations.Lagaan is an indian version of Escape to victory except football and the Germans are replaced by cricket and the British Raj.The film takes a departure from the typical ritual celebrating family or the love triangle ridden youth to a more offbeat cricket match where villagers take on the British against all odds. Aamir Khan is a stand out performance along with Rachel Shelley and Gracy Singh. A number of great scenes exist - the climax cricket match as well as the scene in which the traitor Lakkha's cover is blown. Kudos for Ashutush and Aamir for a wonderful film. Much better than the hyped Gadar.
