Ahsoka (2023)
Good quality
I find the pacing deliberately slow but engaging enough to keep you watching and enjoying the show front to back. I'm not sure the title character is the best one we see on screen. However, the supporting characters are fine and believable enough in their own right. Great to see quality lightsaber duels that certainly enhance the experience. The new character Baylen is a welcome surprise and deserves as much screen time as possible. More so now that the actor has unfortunately passed away. Overall, this show has a lot of attention to detail and has some nice tie ins to Clone Wars and Rebels. I personally didn't watch Rebels but know enough about the backstory to not have to watch it to understand what is going on in Ahsoka. Dave Filoni deserves the keys to the car that is the Star Wars extended universe and I'm excited for more content going forward.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 23: The Spies (2023)
Dank Ferrick!
Bo Katan succeeds in unifying the scattered Mandalorians and brings them back to Mandalore. Din pledges his allegiance to her and there is some fantastic dialog on how she has doubts she is the leader she once was. Grogu gets an upgraded vehicle that is more of a toy than anything else. Hysterical. We see some tension between the two factions of Mandalorians, including the two alpha males which is fantastic. Moff Gideon's face is shown again and he looks determined to finish the job he set out to accomplish in season one and two. The Empire is rebuilding right under the nose of the New Republic and the Mandalorians. A sense of doom is felt when the Mandalorians return to their home world. And sure enough, "IT'S A TRAP!"
It's not obvious but there's a growing sense that the Armorer is not who we think she is, hence the title of the episode. We shall see what happens in the season finale!
WWII in HD (2009)
Must-Watch
This is one of the most compelling, well researched and personalized accounts of multiple people who were involved in the war effort in WWII. It brings to life many never seen before images. This accomplishes 2 things: it brings old footage into the new century but also provides an unfiltered, grim glimpse of the horrors of war.
You follow several people in their journeys through the major theaters of the war. Sometimes you wonder why their stories are important. Then you realize how very easy it was to become a casualty of war, which makes it all the more heroic, terrifying and mind boggling that they were able to survive the most brutal and unforgiving elements of war.
This is as good as it gets for any viewer, casual or otherwise.
Stranger Things: Chapter Eight: Papa (2022)
The Empire Strikes Back
This is the equivalent of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
The bad guys show their face and strike the first blow (Battle of Hoth/Vecna targets). But the good guys have already found a way to defeat their enemy (Death Star/Mind Flayer, demogorgans).
11 (Luke) is in training and needs to find their powers (the force) again in order to defeat the enemy (Darth Vader) once and for all. However, 11 (and Luke) don't finish their training as she sees her friends in grave danger (trap on Cloud City).
There's plenty of moments where characters look past their own vulnerability and are willing to do whatever it takes to defeat the enemy once and for all.
Winner takes all. The perfect setup to the season finale!
Stranger Things: Chapter Four: Dear Billy (2022)
The best of the best
I went into this season with no expectations, even though this is one of my favorite shows of all time. Every season keeps getting better than the one prior but this one set the bar so high that it's impossible to compare it to the previous 3. That being said, we already know the characters and love them for who they are and understand their stories and intentions. What blew me away was this allows us to dive deeper into other characters stories and this one takes the cake. We see Max in peril and we deeply care about her in how she tried to move on and cope with her brother's death. The stakes have never been higher and this is easily the most emotional chapter of the entire series. The shootout scene reminds me of the epic, one camera shot in True Detective. I love everything about this episode.
This episode alone deserves an Emmy.
Bluey (2018)
Oh Biscuits!
As a newish parent, this is the most relatable, hysterical show I can watch with my kiddo. I can watch the same episodes over and over again!
Can't wait for more seasons!
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Where's the beef?
3 episodes in and I can't make any sense of this show! I kinda liked the flashbacks at first but it's now an annoying distraction. Ep. 1 could have been much better. Ep. 2 was a masterpiece and Ep. 3 just sucks. No one. Repeat. NO ONE wants to see Boba Fett with his helmet off, sitting on a throne, lying in a bacta tank or asking other people to do stuff he can do better. This show has made one of the most iconic SW characters weak and boring. I hope the season ends on a high note.
