Blindness (2008)
Movie makes some good point but it's still too drawn out and boring
The movie points out the humans are capable of great atrocities and great good, after everybody-- except one-- go blind. From about half an hour into the movie to half an hour left; it just feels drawn out, boring and frustrating like "why don't they just do this." Especially since one person can still see and she lets blind people do things that she could easily stop because of her advantage. At one point in the movie I was just temped to turn it off because it seemed to be going nowhere. It's not until the last 15 minutes that the purpose starts to materialize, but that's still not worth sitting through the movie.
Don't read the next paragraph unless you have seen the movie. It won't make sense other wise.
At a side note there are a few spots that are just funny: first when they discover that "the gates are unlocked" (how much of the movie could have been avoided if someone just checked?) That reminds me of when I'll spend ten minutes looking for something, only to discover I've been holding it in my hand the whole time. Second, when Juliane Moore's character lights a match in a pitch black room,I get flash backs to cartoons where a character discovers that the room is full of TNT just before it blows up. One, thing I was glad about was that no one regained their sight in some stupid way like I thought would happen during a few scenes.
Hot Fuzz (2007)
Action comedy makes fun of action movies, so is it a parody of itself?
Hilarious comedy combining a wide range of humor, from slapstick to satire, in an 'in you face' way. Basically this movie is filmed like an action movie: flashing between camera angles making a 'whoosh' sound, plenty of swearing, over the top characters and the quintessential action movie cliché large explosion to top it off.
There is very little action except about 20 minutes, most of it at the end. The movie is about the perfect police man, Nicolas Angel, who gets transfered from his London job--because he makes the others in the department look bad--to an odd little village in the country. There with his lazy incompetent partner who is infatuated with action movies he investigates a series a 'accidents' which he believes are really murders.
Other than his perfect reputation, Sgt. Angel is a realistic police man the only really plausibly realistic character. He does not like to get in to physical confrontation because there is "a lot of paperwork", he dislikes guns and says his best police tool is a notebook. By contrast, his partner Danny Butterman is lazy, incompetent and irresponsible.
Most of the movie plays out as a mystery comedy with action-like- sequencing. Plenty of British humor and slapstick. And when the movie truly gets heated up the multi-layer humor makes this one of the best comedies in recent years.
If you like--or maybe even dislike--most action movies and love comedy then this movie is an excellent choice--but caution: some action involved.
Minority Report (2002)
Just plain excellent
I've seen this movie an innumerable times but have never been a real fan of it. The problem was that i have never seen it from start to finish in one sitting. I have always seen it on TV where I only catch parts of it and am not paying too much attention to it. However, this is one movie that--if you give it your initial attention--you will never lose interest. Superb visuals and a push and pull of the pace that never lets the movie fall into any long dull parts or unnecessary drawn out action sequences make this a thoroughly entertaining film. The plot twists fit well with the other parts of the movie creating a mildly intellectually stimulating movie. While the twists may seem to be predictable for some, the twists are for creating an engrossing plot rather than just for the shock factor. I thoroughly recommend this movie beginning to end.
Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula (2000)
Slow at times but a good hybrid of history and fiction
I would like to see more Dracula movies based on the actual person. This is the first one I have ever come across. It's nice to see an interpretation on the real person rather than the Hollywood version. Though i wouldn't rely on this movie for true and accurate history, it did appear to stretch it for drama sake. The atmosphere is perfect, dark and haunting in a medieval sort of way. I thought it was amusing how at certain points the movie there were allusions to the common vampire myth (two i recall are about mirrors and driving a stake through Dracula's heart). Those point do spark interest into the real customs and beliefs of that time that formed the myth. I would recommend this movie to those who are at the least mildly interested in history and Dracula. Though it's a little dull at times and the brutality is dumbed down (it is a TV movie), it's a good movie to see when its on TV.
