The Great British Bake Off (2010)
Contestant TV, not contrived 'reality' TV
Amateur bakers give their all to shine under difficult circumstances. In return, they receive constructive comments plus admiration from the audience and their peers. They balance art, science, and time management, and face challenges that draw deeply upon their skills and expertise. A great show for families and anyone who's interested in learning more about kitchen chemistry, global flavors and culture via food.
Tidying Up with Marie Kondo (2019)
Some tips & tricks that likely help many
Kondo provides a decent framework for treating/curing the chronic pains of clutter. Some of her steps, such as thanking items before saying goodbye, and greeting the house, seem silly. At least most families boost their teamwork and improve their living conditions. I've only watched a few episodes, and they all seem a little too rosy without much conflict or drama. Contrasting the before images in black & white vs. color for the after images seems like a cheap imitation of The Wizard of Oz.
Prince$$ (2010)
Intervention, abusers/addicts and enablers plus suspense
One of the few reality shows that I can watch, and binge on, because it has it all - dysfunction & abusive relationships that result in a financially-focused intervention that's expertly led by Gail. It's great to see a variety of princesses who are not all 20-something women. I would love to see a few follow-up episodes now that several years have passed to see if/how the 30 day lessons, behaviors and promises did or did not stick. Which couples broke up and which ones stayed together? Gail's constructive comments are the pillars of this show. We need more of this in the US.
