Barbarian (2022)
More original than I thought it would be
As a massive horror fan, flicking through Amazon I saw this was a rare horror movie with above 7 on IMDb. Looking at the description I thought would be generic and had it sussed out but the film was surprisingly well executed and not what I expected.
It Kept me much more entertained than the usual generic Blumhouse roll them out horrors ! Justin Longs appearance was a big surprise, he seems to choose his horror films well and has never been in one that's sub par.
Overall a good watch nice to see execution being more original. As someone who usually prefers more supernatural orentated films and hates the gore and slasher stuff it surprised me how much I enjoyed. Solid 7.5/10.

Netflix only cancel good shows
Why is it that when you find a show that actually ticks the boxes of horror mixed with mystery and suspense, not the usual generic horror it's cancelled. Admittedly I have seen this re trending having attempted to watch a while back I only got two episodes in I found myself wondering on watching again why I never got through and I still don't know why !
Although it has its flaws it was relatively original and intriguing enough to keep you wanting more which is becoming increasingly rare with Netflix series.
It appears now the show is re trending Netflix should re consider it did not have the boost it should have when it was originally released.
Netflix please produce more original horrors !!!
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Why do Netflix films never have endings ?
They are always the same. Every film with a similar premise produced by Netflix takes you along the same route of mystery and intrest to leave you with no answers or conclusions at the end. You feel cheated every time. I don't know whether it's lazy writing or just the way Netflix deals with these types of films but every time you hope for conclusions or resolution there is absolutely nothing.
Apart from some very unrealistic reactions to situations which give the audience a familiar frustration which would be forgivable given that there is something deeper that the plot builds up to.
Netflix please start giving us something to pay off the 2 hour watch time!! I love this genre alongside Horror so I am thankful when they do get produced I just wish they would do better !!
The Black Phone (2021)
As usual. No payoff at the end
I love horror. Any new horror movie especially with a supernatural twist are very much welcome.
Which is becoming an increasingly annoying trend is not having any explanation to any motives or any character development or any answers to any major questions. I understand that it's for the viewer to come to these conclusions but it's just getting lazy.
Having said the above it kept my attention for the whole film but again left you feeling a bit stolen of time at the end for the aforementioned reasons
Good acting from Ethan Hawk, the kid was not as believable but good non the less.
This last line is to fill the character requirement.
Nope (2022)
Much promise with no payoff
I'm all for (slightly more) original Horrors especially when not your generic slasher so it gets a slightly higher mark for effort.
There unfortunately was ( which is a growing trend in all movies these days ) no payoff in terms of any answers to the plot or mystery which effectively makes the 2 and a bit hour watch very dissatisfying and annoying.
What was the point of the monkey storey line ? This was actually more disturbing than the whole film. What was the reason for the theme park ? Why was the large boy balloon filled with helium ?
A solid 5 for cinematography but leaves you feeling empty and annoyed.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Not sure what this was meant to be
Only got half way through which is very rare for me, I like most of the actors but it just didn't feel right. I'm not sure what this was meant to be satire of as if there was a meteorite heading to the earth the media would be ensuring there would be the fear of God put into every person in the world, which has been proven with the pandemic. The scientist enjoying the limelight is also ironically a real life example of the past two years not satire. I heard this was meant to be metaphoric for climate change ? But being from England we could not have more of a pro green leader costing the tax payer millions at the cost of day to day life, what more should we do?. I think the producers / writers are very confused with their messaging.
The Other Side of the Door (2016)
Some great visual horror
It appears from the reviews that true horror fans appreciate this whereas people who are just looking at it from a story perspective grade it much lower. As a horror fan , and never heard of the film I was pleasantly surprised of how creepy and scary it was with some genuine disturbing moments that are lacking from many modern day horrors. I do not know why the score is so low so hopefully this will bolster it !
Midnight Mass (2021)
6/6.5 - still no where near Hill House
Some unnecessary political story's, boring long winded dialogue and other plot issues I could not understand like why the farther had been fully exposed to the Angel but could go outside for quite a while following that, but for then for everyone else it was instant combustion ? Other than those it was a good attempt, watchable (although was getting quite bored the last two episodes) and a slightly fresh take on vampires in a genre what has been absolutely exhausted. Flanningan is struggling to get anywhere close to Hill House which I thought was the best horror series for quite some time (bar the ending), at least this was better than the upmost disappointing Blyth Manor and a better attempt than most cut and paste horrors these days.
Another Life (2019)
SEASON 1 REVIEW
I watched all 10 episodes over the course of a couple of days so it must of done something for me.
It takes a broad range of themes and recycled ideas from the Sifi movie manual and scatters all these (slightly lazily) over each episode to fill out the series with different B stories all of which have been seen before.
This is definitely not one to be taken too seriously as there is many plot holes. There is also the inevitable elements of "box ticking" like with all Netflix shows which is always slightly irritating as it does not forward the plot or the stories in any way and is very see through.
One of the most frustrating aspects is the conduct of the crew members it's very hard to believe these people are highly trained professionals who have been chosen as potentially humanities final Hope. They don't take their jobs very seriously and have no respect for authority or rank, they act like spoilt children.
Having said the above the series does take some good sifi concepts and puts them together for a relatively entertaining journey, it could of been done better but you can say that about almost any film/series. I will watch season 2.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
This is how DC should do it
So many people seem to love all these previous DC movies but for me they were simply boring and unlikable. This is the way they should go and they will be above Marvel. Get rid of synder and the old writers and DC are on to a winner.
The Haunting (1999)
Under rated classic
This is one of the first horror films I ever watched and in my opinion one of the best. The cherubs faces imprinted into my brain since I was 11. The sets, architecture and attention to detail are incredible.
The production value is second to none especially of a film from this era. This type of film has an Erie hand unsettling feel and it's a different class compared to the copy and paste films of today. The whole thing has a very Del Toro esque feel which pre dates many of his films.
This film is a childhood classic and a very good horror movie. Watching as an adult it may not be as scary but can be appreciated for what it is and what it captured for me as a child.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Don't waste your Christmas Eve / Xmas
The film had some very predictable and pointless heart racing moments but that's all, so if you like a bit of anxiety for the sake of it this film is for you. The rest of it is filled full of pointless dialogue . No story no plot development no explanations. Another Netflix film with a non ending, nothing explained. Waste of time.
Only positive is Clooney didn't push (too hard anyway) any hardcore environmental/left ideology on the film, there is a slight hint of "the humans ruined the world" but they don't even bother to explain how. Lazy.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Perfectly Disappointing
I waited so long for the second season to come out after Hill House was perfect (bar the ending). I have struggled to pay any attention to this series, there is little horror, just pretentious unconvincing love stories with characters you don't care about about with horrifically long dialogues. They have also thrown in some PC stories for good measure. This is set in the 80s but they speak like it's the 20s, as someone who is English it just gets annoying. I'm on episode 7 and it's just unwatchable, too much talking with no horror at all. They should strip away "the haunting" title of the series as it's false advertisement. After the first series there was so much potential, but this is just another blow for 2020.
