Noord-Korea: Een dag uit het leven (2004)
A rare glimpse into life in Pyongyang
This film presents a North Korean family progressing through an 'average' day. There is no narration, but the filmmaker gives a point to the presentation through his use of film techniques and soundtrack. In order to get this sort of access, Mr. Fleury did have to make concessions to the DPRK government, and its clear that they are putting their best face forward here. However, there is a jarring dissonance between what they must think is their "best face" and what international viewers will probably see as a grim, claustrophobic, and stultifying life that can only be endured by projecting all life's miseries on the "bastard Americans". Best watched in conjunction with "A State of Mind".
Doggy Poo (2003)
If you hated "Davy and Goliath"
... then you'll hate this too. The religious message is less obvious with the subtitles than it is if you understand the Korean, but you can't miss the conclusion "God has a purpose for you" - that's nice and all, but one thing I can't stand about the bible bashers is their SNEAK ATTACKS. If this had advertised itself as a religious cartoon, then I wouldn't have wasted the money or time, but instead it's billed as an "eccentric" cartoon. I'm thinking Devo, I get Pat Boone.
Hey, if you want your religious beliefs confirmed by a cheap claymation piece of poo, then have at it. If you're looking for something interesting coming out of Korea, slug down some 'pem-ju' and rent "Old Boy
Love, Honour and Obey (2000)
I want my $7 back!
I got this one on video, falling for the blurb on the cover and hoping that it would be at least half as entertaining as the movie it compared itself to. But no luck. We shut this dog of a movie off maybe halfway through. How many gratuitous karaoke scenes can one man stand? No plot to speak of and very light on the laughs (unless actors doing monologue in clown makeup is your kind of comedy). Fine if the directors and actors wanted to have a bit of fun with a camera, but they shouldn't try to foist it off as worth paying to watch.
