Rick and Morty: Childrick of Mort (2020)
Great start, lost some steam.
The beginning was great. There is a lot of really quick fun social commentary, and an interesting setup. The middle lost itself a bit, but overall I enjoyed it a lot. Hard to compete with the last episode though.
Rick and Morty: The Vat of Acid Episode (2020)
Masterful.
At the start of this episode I knew they had something up their sleeve. Just like with the "Ricklantis Mixup" they kept the details as secretive as possible, throwing out the Vat of Acid bit at the beginning as a red herring for what they really wanted to do.
I loved the main section of this episode. A bit of banter and exposition leads up to a brilliant 6 to 7 minutes with hardly any dialogue borrowing from the Roy game that plays like (here come some references) an 80s high concept comedy, Groundhog day, the opening scene of Up, and a Black Mirror episode.
Then we get to the twist, a reference to The Prestige, a movie about a magician whose trick is that he creates a copy of himself that he drowns. However, to me the way to twist plays made me think the whole episode was Rick and Morty's equivalent of "Scott Tennorman Must Die". The ultimate lesson was that the character pulling the final twist is dangerous.
Within the rest of the Rick and Morty canon I'm guessing this episode will get a lot of heads spinning. Is this an origin story for Evil Morty? Rick mentioned in the first Citadel of Ricks episode that a cocky Morty can lead to bad stuff, and when Rick asks why Morty is getting so cocky Morty says it's because of the events of the episode. Could the event where Rick compiles the vast number of Mortys from different realities together have something to do with how Evil Morty was made?
Regardless, this was a wonderful episode. Packed with ideas, great directing and editing (especially the 6-7 minutes of nearly no dialogue in the middle) it effortlessly jumped from joyful to touching to emotional.
Also, it made me laugh. A lot. Especially the end credit scene.
