Angels and Insects (1995)
Surprise(!)ingly good
**** SPOILER ALERT ****
A very odd, erotic, yet good film. Kristin Scott Thomas is very good, as is the overall actint. Moves a little slowly at time, but the biggest surprise comes from actor Douglas Henschall. The actor goes much farther in terms of displaying frontal nudity than is ever scene in mainstream movies (use your imagination)! It was shocking that it made the cut, but then again, this is a foreign movie and they aren't as hung up overseas about nudity and such as we are here in the US. Recommended.
Europa Europa (1990)
Outstanding
One of the finest movies I have ever seen, and highly recommended as a "must see" for young people. The movie is based on a true story, and Marco Hofschneider does a wonderful job showing the multiple "roles" young Solomon had to take in order to survive. He speaks both German and Russian in the movie flawlessly. The movie is depressing but inspiring, and it is a fine example of what people had to go through during the horrors of WWII. Four stars!!
Die Erben (1983)
Highly recommended
An outstanding movie which highlights the allure that neo-Nazi and other gangs have to disaffected youth. The movie is well acted, but is violent and has numerous sex scenes. These scenes are surprising in their graphic nature, seeing that many of the young actors are clearly teenagers. One of the better movies I have ever seen.
The Genesis Children (1972)
Revolutionary
Its amazing that a movie like this was ever made in prudish America, although one has to exclude the 60's and 70's from that label. The boys in the movies (ages 10-16) are completely nude for many scenes, and make no attempt to hide any frontal nudity. While it is unusual for boys of this age to show any nudity in American films, European films regularly show situational nudity of all ages. It would be nice to see American film-makers, and the general public relax with nudity in films (and in general), which somehow always gets related to sex (thanks to religious paranoia). There are no sexual innuendos in this film at all, and it is basically no different than watching a European nudist film, albeit there is at least an attempt at a plot here. Hard to find film, but still available through some distributors. The "leader" in the film (Peter Glawson) starred in another film (Peter & the Desert Riders) around the same time, but that film is almost non-existent.
Maya (1966)
Good movie
Relatively good movie, starring the former "Dennis the Menace" star, Jay North. Surprising that North, who was a teenager at the time, had a scene showing his bare backside in a 1960's-era movie. While it isn't unusual to see this in any European movie from any era, it is with a US movie.
Tú solo (1984)
Fascinating
An amazing quasi-documentary with good performances from the young pre-teen and teenage actors. The nude bullfighting scene is fascinating without being exploitive, and it serves as an analogy for the vulnerability these young bullfighters have when in the ring with the bulls. Hard to find, but recommended.
