Seven Waves Away (1957)
LIFEBOAT's dark cousin
***SPOILERS***
Though very similair to Alfred Hitchcock's LIFEBOAT, this is much darker and more psychological. It's very disturbing, dealing with the theme of whether you're able to do a great evil in order to do something good in the long run. Power's captain has to deal with an unthinkable desion: do you have to sacrifice many in order to save a few? Do you have to put your humanity behind you in order to survive?
This is a very good picture (despite the silly voice-over at the end, which makes it seem like a B-movie), but I still like LIFEBOAT much better. Maybe because of my fondness for Hitchcock, but also because his film has heart in it. Technical wise, it's very difficult for you to feel for these people primarily because there are too many of passengers, making it difficult to have deep characterizations. The only person who makes it in the end that you really feel for is the young nurse. Every one else is petty and whiney, save for the young socialite that you want to slap repeatedly, and the captain who (though it might differ for someone else) I thought was doing a great evil.
