Psycho Bettys are the best!
29 January 2018
Four ladies, all named Betty are sent to Earth for new breeding material in a spaceship disguised as a Honda. The leader takes things in hand and chops them off to get the necessary breeding material while the other three Bettys find compatible boys and do it the old fashioned way. Add to that the whole thing is a musical with some great tunes. The cast looks like they are having a blast and I am going to order the soundtrack this week.

True love amongst the long boxes
12 September 2017
Kevin owns a local comic book store. He just found out after three years of dating his girlfriend that they are second cousins. Fearing flipper babies they decide to break up. Kevin sulks at the shop with his friends Todd and Lisa and then Carley enters their life. She is a comic shop wiz and Kevin can use the help since a new shop is in town ran by the one and only Ian Petrella, you know the kid who played Randy in A Christmas Story? He thinks she might be into him, but Carley has someone else she's interested in. Lisa. This is such a sweet, little movie. Being a comic book nerd I laughed when the guy came in to sell his 50 copies of Death of Superman. The entire cast are fun to watch as they deal with being twenty somethings in Ohio. Ian Petrella looked like he was having a great time being a dingbat version of himself. Who knows? Maybe he's an actual dingbat in real life. No idea as I have never met the man. I liked that the film gave much love to independent comics. Quarter Bin is sweet and funny and gives off a comfortable small town vibe from people that actually live there, well except for Ian Petrella. I assume he's in LA in his mansion he bought with his A Christmas Story money. This was on Amazon Prime and the title grabbed me immediately. The cover seemed a little exploitative for what is essentially an awkward love story, but it works. I would watch this again.

Making a movie can be fun...unless you're the writer.
12 September 2017
We start at a little restaurant where film writer Byron (Byron Thames) is waiting for his associates to discuss their latest film which may or may not be called The Mad Killer. Over drinks and coffee they try to make a film script work, but when two of them are just interested in titillation and mayhem, Byron wants something more. There has to be something more than just making movies because you can, right? Byron Thames does a great job as the writer who thinks this is the best he's going to get. He's been doing it for so long that he doesn't know anything else. Larry (Larry Thomas, yes, The Soup Nazi) is a hilarious director who revels in making crap. When asked about a movie he made a while back none of them can immediately remember the name of it. We get to go into the movie being made with scenes by David Faustino and Joe Estevez. Somehow they got Erin Moran and Ed Asner to be in the movie. For his two little scenes as a financial backer, Asner is hilarious. Lindsay Gareth as Holly deserves a mention as their waitress for the evening. All she wants to do is act and she got a waitress job five years ago thinking it would be temporary. She wants to act and is willing to do anything to get into a movie. Anything. HACKS is a funny, sweet movie that is probably spot on in the making of low budget films today. The fake scenes for movies that will never be made made me laugh. They even make fun of the movie their in when Byron suggests making a movie based on them sitting around talking about the script for the movie. They all agree no one would watch that. SO funny. Finally, a refreshing viewpoint from an unexpected source gives Byron the nerve to try something new and different. This was such a fun little film and Byron Thames carries the majority of the weight and makes you want to find out what happens to this guy. That's what makes the movie good. Well, that and Joe Estevez. You can never have too much Joe Estevez.

Sin by Murder (2004 Video)

A perfect micro cinema erotic thriller
31 July 2012
A crazy woman who uses sex as a weapon. Sure, it's been done before, but not like this. Baranowski usually does his own thing. His one of those triple threat writer/director/actor guys. You can tell he want to be in total control and this makes for some excellent film work. This time out he is a work for hire guy and he shows that it can be done for next to nothing. With a budget that couldn't cover the g-string expense on any of Skinamax film he surpasses most of them. Hell, there's a scene with a lie detector and there is no lie detector equipment in the room! Ryli Morgan, as always, brings a simmering heat to the screen that makes this a film worth watching. Make a point of seeing Sin By Murder.
