Leave the World Behind (2023)
Question the intelligence of movie reviewers
Sure, that includes this review as well. But let's consider the possibility that the smartest guy in the room isn't rating this movie a 4/10 because it "doesn't make sense."
An absolute masterpiece of a film that plays on decades of American paranoia with a subtle, yet alarming, hints of the American psyche. Sprinkled so perfectly that the these low star reviews, in my opinion, prove one of the major points of the film.
We were presented with the purpose of the film on a silver platter and people still missed it. Even the cinematography and scores used mock the very nature of American society that he's unveiling to us.
One of the most powerful scenes was the contractor who stood firm in his values, with complete awareness and confidence of what was happening yet...he sacrifices his principles for cash. He reassures himself that it's appropriate and even tries to remove himself from modern capitalism by referring to it as a "barter system." It could also point to his humanity, or our perception of what we believe to be humane. Since this film bucked at every opportunity to "do the right thing" from a social standpoint (like the older brother speaking to his sister in the barn which was a heartfelt moment, he reassures her that yes, no one listens to her) I doubt this was some type of pity for his son. Perhaps it was hope? Regardless, when it's time to make difficult decisions that immediately affect your survival in a doomsday scenario, even the contractor caved.
As someone of AVERAGE intelligence, it's impossible not to appreciate this film for its execution of a seemingly supernatural occurrence that is completely based in reality. It's not complex by any means. It doesn't require astute observations. But it does raise the question, where does our food come from? Are we able to provide for ourselves? Are we rationale as we believe we are? All you can do is mumble to yourself as you sit on your couch and watch.
I'd expect nothing less from Sam Esmail. I've never cared to meet a celebrity and try not to put strangers on a pedestal but I would love to sit down and understand his process...or the process of the Korean Mossad agent that wrote this script and had it executively produced by the Obamas. /s Bravo.

What do you ask of a painting?
Nothing. When you stand in front of the canvas it either speaks to you, or it doesn't. This movie is a work of art. It's presentation isn't profound or overly complex, but allows infinite analysis. A remarkable achievement.

Pure Happiness
An insightful look at the experiences of a Nigerian american. Even more so, we witness the common interactions that happen across the immigrant community. Her upbringing reflects a much higher standard of success and shes a woman that can look back and laugh at the impossible bar she once met. The joy she holds will be impactful for anyone that watches.
