The Wicker Man (2006)
Apparently, the American audiences didn't "get" the original!!!
PLEASE tell me, my US cousins - that this isn't true.
The original Wicker Man was dark, kooky, unsettling, sexy, claustrophobic and mysterious.
There was nothing - NOTHING - intriguing about this "remake".
The whole "goodie ending up kind of being a baddie for poking his nose in in the first place" twist (THE WHOLE POINT OF THE STORY) was lost in this ludicrous copy of an all time classic.
Like I say - apparently the US audience didn't appreciate the subtle uneasiness of the original. I really hope that this is a lame excuse from some body in the department responsible for the PR for this pile of crap.
Did they really think they could improve on the original? How arrogant can you get!!! I sincerely hope Christopher Lee is still in touch with some of those Orks (from lord of the rings) and he sets them on Nicolas Cage and the rest of the bozo cast.
Truly, laughably, ridiculous.
AVOID
The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Sublime - a breezy, sexy, party of a movie
Meryl Streep is wonderful. Aloof ice queen with a vulnerable side. It is the latter that stops the character becoming a caricature and prevents Streep from repeating her Cruella DeVille performance.
Hathaway's contribution to TDWP ticks all the boxes and she delivers consistently. I didn't warm to her especially, but didn't really need to - as her "Regular Joe" role allowed for the eccentricities of her surrounding characters to shine.
Emily's sarcasm and cutting, dry comedic precision was in a word, Britsh. She was excellently cast and deservedly so. I look forward to seeing her in a bigger role very soon.
The male characters are all very attractive and charming - but this is a very female film. The women are powerful, ambitious, successful and above all - fabulous.
Some have criticised the "wrapping up" of the Andy and Cliché-nice-boyfriend storyline. In all honesty, I barely noticed him.
At last, a film where fashion-conscious women aren't portrayed as brazen bimbos, and the men... are just a nice accessory!
Angels in America (2003)
It's THEATRE - not a "Miniseries!.....
I cannot believe the amount of idiots who are leaving comments about a film which is based on a PLAY... for the THEATRE... and not written solely for TV - there is a world beyond the TV set you know! Some of the "reviewers" clearly don't understand Kushner's aim here. It's interesting why people keep going on, and on, about left-wing-propaganda, and saying how they "don't mind gays" but go on to display extremely homophobic views.
We live in a time where HIV/AIDS is being spread by STRAIGHT PROFESSIONAL people faster than any other socio-economic group. The blinkered hypocrisy displayed by the dumb red-necks who obviously think we should live in a nicey-nicey Monica&Chandler world is offensive. Disease, blasphemy, affairs, bigotry - they happen. This play was written to portray the lives of people who were at the forefront of a plague epidemic... for some people to say it is "outdated" and "irrelevant" because it is set in the 80's is like saying that Shindler's List is also "pointless".
The people who find this piece of film pompous - do, however, have a point. I love this film, but parts of Emma Thompson's Angel speech made even me want to scratch my eyes out! I think this is down to poor direction and lazy acting rather than a weak script.
Every pause, every word and every character in this play/movie is there for a reason. Yes, some of the characters are extreme - but they are necessary.
Kushner isn't saying that AIDS is Reagan's fault - he's saying that at a time when an epidemic was amongst his people - he took a typical right wing "I'm OK, so screw them" approach to the disease - why? Because the majority of those affected were homosexuals and drug addicts. If AIDS had been a suburban plague - do you really think he would have ignored it for so long??? Think about it - even now, rich, white, professionals (straight, gay, whatever) are running around spreading Aids because they are stupid and horny and take the risk - while millions of Africans every year are BORN with the disease. And what to Blair and Bush do??? FA! People REALLY should think about this film before they start rubbishing it just because they are too inbred and twee to live in the real world.
Yes - it's too long. So what???? x
Hoboken Hollow (2006)
What a waste of £3.95 and two hours!
I chose this movie on a damp bank holiday weekend when funds were low and there was nothing on TV. The video shop had very few options, and to cut a long story short - I've had a thing for Michael Madson ever since Thelma and Louise, and even Kill Bill 2 (at a push).
Not only was he barely in it, he looked fat!!! "Never mind," I thought, "this is meant to be really scary and should be good," snuggling up to my boyfriend and turning the lights down low.
By the end of the film, my boyfriend was barely speaking to me, half furious, half bemused he stuttered, "I can't believe you brought that DVD in to our house".
This really, really is an awful film, the writing is so bad the "scary" bits are hilarious, so poorly acted that the "moving" bits are, again, hilarious. The characters are far-fetched and the plot is ridiculous.
The Dennis Hopper good cop/bad cop thread is predictable and boring, the bad characters are like pantomime villains (a woman with five warts on her face?!), the good characters are so dull, boring and naive for getting themselves in to the situation they are in leaves you tempted to track them down and torture them yourself... the rape scene was the only part of the film I found difficult to watch - and that is merely because rape in itself is a disgusting act that makes most people uneasy, and not that I was moved by the crude/ludicrous representation of such abuse by lame acting and the vision of ol' five warts lingering in the door way licking her lips... it was borderline insulting.
At the end I didn't care what happened, I just really didn't care. Incidentally, I also chose March of the Penguins on the same trip to the video shop.... How an unsuspecting an unpaid penguin can give off more screen presence and charisma is beyond me.
