Married for Life (1996)
No!!!
My god this was awful. British remake of the incredible US Sit Com Married With Children.
It's really difficult to fully explain how appallingly bad this is. The cast are all well known UK actors except the children who simply cannot act at all.
The scripts are straight remakes of the American series but there is absolutely no chemistry, timing or redeeming qualities here. If anything it is truly amazing that this ever made it to our screens as it is one of the most cringe inducing experiences I have ever sat through. Russ Abbot was an excellent and funny stage performer with a long running sketch show on UK TV but when comes to heading a cast for a full episode as the same character his lack of actual acting ability is exposed for all to see.
All the characters from the US version are reprised but with hugely inferior actors.
The lazy red head wife, the bimbo blond daughter, the creepy little brother and the put upon some salesman. Even the neighbours are the earthy banker and his mousy cloying wife and yes they have a shaggy dog too
Hugh Bonneville is unrecognisable both physically and in so much as he hadn't yet learned to act comedically. He was the only one to come out of this and goon to have a successful acting career.
Unsurprisingly it was cancelled after the first 7 episodes
Awful.
Beatriz at Dinner (2017)
Better than the rating suggests
First things first, this is listed as a comedy drama, I have watched it twice and there is absolutely no comedy involved not even the blackest of humour. I don't know who thought it was funny but they sure weren't watching the same movie as me.
This is a very dark poignant drama in which Hayek reveals a depth that I certainly never perceived in her acting.before.
All throughout this drama there is an underlying suggestion that there is more toBeatriz than is first revealed but in the end the twist is in the symbolism of the finale rather than any big reveal.
Hayek is superb throughout and special mention must go to John Lithgow as Doug the most against type piece of casting I have ever seen but it works due to his sympathetic portrayal and character without without any redeeming qualities.
Recommended watch but don't expect any laughs.
Endeavour: Exeunt (2023)
Perfection
I was too late to the party for the original Morse series and enjoyed Lewis though it was never a classic for me. I then went backwards and watched the origin.a Morse on DVD and loved it, so when Endeavour started I was hooked straight away. I have followed the series religiously from start to end and have never been disappointed with any episode, some were absolute classic detective dramas and the weaker ones were infinitely better than most other similar shows. So I settled down to watch Exuent the final piece of the masterpiece of TV drama with excitement but regret that there would be no more. All I hoped was that the ending would be a match for the incredibly high standards that had gone before. As I sit here writing this I am breathless, I have just watched as close to perfect as it is possible to be in any art form. The writing was perfect as was the acting, most loose ends were tied up, there was a mention for Lewis and the fantasy and imagery were a delight as we finally saw the human Morse rather than the policeman.
It's hard to accept there will be no more but the timelines were already getting blurred so the series had to come to an end and I am thankful that all involved were at the very top of their games to give us what I consider to be the perfect ending.
Endeavour I will miss you.
