Le mépris (1963)
A totally dreadful film
Newcastle Film Society showed this movie last night. What can I say about it, apart from being totally and utterly bored. First, this movie received very bad reviews when it was released, it was panned by critics worldwide and by the public. I'd only seen Breathless, which I think is an interesting film, and one I could watch over again. "Contempt" on the other hand had very flat dialogue story, Jack Palance was utterly wasted with his overacting, and the cinematography which some describe as "stunning" appears very flat and uninteresting. I didn't like the story much.. I noticed Leonard Maltin's movie guide gave this film 3.5 stars. I'd give it 1/4 stars - it was horrid! Oh, and before I forget 25 people walked out...
The Omega Factor (1979)
Not so great, still there is a mysterious quality to it which keeps one wanting to see what happens at times.
I found what I've seen of this series to be too slow and not very interesting for my liking. I must admit I bought this series blind thinking it would be another good BBC like production - how wrong I was. The most interesting part of the series is how it is an early version of X-files. Also the mysterious element kept me watching, because I wanted to know what happens next, more so out of curiosity. I bought this set around March / April and haven't watched all of it yet - Ifind it difficult to finish episodes and need a frequent breaks before I can come back and finish watching them. I'm hoping when I start watching the remaining episodes - there's about six to go - my opinion might change somewhat, and I'll be able to watch the rest of the series without needing to feel I have to leave the room. I've never done this with any BBC TV series, so obviously this series isn't doing much for me. I will have to make sure I do my research more thoroughly before investing in a TV series I know little about. This is the only dud purchase I've made, and even though it is so, there are elements of The Omega Factor I find slightly interesting... like the psychic connection, visions of the main protagonist. I will report later what I think of the entire series once I'm finished, but I can see why it only lasted one season.
Inflation (1943)
Is Inflation available on DVD?
Does anyone know if "Inflation" is available as a DVD supplement? I watched this short anti-Nazi propaganda newsreel piece at the 1940s movie music movie group I attend several years ago, and thought the idea of the devil encouraging people to make goods and thus raise the inflation level of the USA quite ingenious. I believe the music was quite interesting used within it, and it was quite novel to see how greedy people were after the devil encouraged them through his own style of propaganda to buy to excess with his cunning plan to send the world into Depression and obtain enjoyment out of people's misfortune and personal misery. From memory the cinematography of this piece was quite interesting coupled with the devil's overacting entrenched this piece in my brain, even though it is really quite minor when you consider it in the aspect of short newsreel history. It is my belief that people remember the comic overacting devil, and this is why "Inflation" has found a warm place in most people's minds from the older generation. I am 35, so younger people might have also found this interesting short newsreel as well. I give this 7/10 for the novelty factor although it's possibly only worth a 5-6/10 at most for it's overall content.
