Dead Man's Shoes (2004)
Flawless, grim, foreboding, revenge flick with blurred lines.
What can I say? Judging by some of the reviews on here some people have severely missed the point and the genius of this film but it's their loss.
This is hands down one of the most authentic depictions of small time crime in a tiny off the beaten track town I've ever seen.
Some if the biggest criticism seems to be from Americans not managing with the accents, and laughing at the small time nature of the criminal gang, let anyone reading this be assured both are authentic.
The gang have had it easy for too long, and nine are prepared or equiped to deal with the darkness that has just walked back into town.
Paddy Constantine gives a magnificent performance of a man bent on revenge, owning his targets with absolutely fear, so dedicated to terrorising his brother's abusers that you find yourself asking if he's really doing it for his brother or for his own amusement.
Toby Kebble also deserves a huge mention and I don't think its hyperbolic to say if this was a bigger budget film he would be up for Supporting Actor at the Oscars.
Even the gang, who I believe are mainly non actors, lend so much to this film. Believability for a start, making this feel more like a documentary and less like fantasy.
Dark, gripping, thought provoking. This didn't leave the back of my mind for weeks. Especially the "kettle" scene which I personally think is one of the most terrifying scenes I've ever seen.
In a word, perfect.
The Silver Foxes 2: Shape Up America (2001)
A study in the pyschology of powerplay
A brilliant example of what happens when you put two matriarchs with fragile egos in a room together. Williams and Stallone battle each other with brilliant passive aggressive gusto, while Pachino and Hoffman are there for the ride, without a clue between them to rub together. You won't learn anything about exercise, but you will find out what a narcissist looks like
