Nope (2022)
A critique of our surveillance
This movie is a spectacle. It's also extremely cautious and beautiful in its approach.
I watched with an open mind, obviously not much insight was given to the contents of the movie beforehand. I was pleasantly surprised - with the Jordan Peele tag, I was expecting to be amazed, and I got my wish.
The movie critiques human surveillance, and how every moment of our day is consumed by wanting to capture something. Most of the movie covers the characters attempting to capture the UFO on film, which also taps in to entertainment culture, and the newly emerging theme of 'won't believe it till I see it'. They believe that until they capture this thing on camera, it basically doesn't exist.
They want to get the money shot - which then again, taps gently into the greed of current society.
Throughout, the Haywood ranch also begins to feel like that of a prison - they are constantly being watched by this thing, which is then flipped. The 'watched' become the watchers.
A cleverly crafted critique and pursuit of modern cinema and the art of encapsulation and viewing - the UFO is even named 'The Viewer' by JUPE.
House of the Witch (2017)
Atrociously amazing.
This film is so bad, it's almost good. The special effects, the cliché storyline, the basic 'all dead by the end' horror style; and the acting, i can't even touch upon that.
